Phase diagram of a random-anisotropy mixed-spin Ising model

We investigate the phase diagram of a mixed spin-1/2--spin-1 Ising system in the presence of quenched disordered anisotropy. We carry out a mean-field and a standard self-consistent Bethe--Peierls calculation. Depending on the amount of disorder, there appear novel transition lines and multicritical points. Also, we report some connections with a percolation problem and an exact result in one dimension.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Development and use of a new medium to detect yeasts of the genera Dekkera/Brettanomyces

Aims: The objectives of this work were to develop a selective and/or differential medium able to effciently recover Dekkera/Brettanomyces sp. from wine-related environments and to determine the relationship between these yeasts and the 4-ethylphenol content in a wide range of wines. Methods and Results: The selectivity of the developed medium was provided by the addition of ethanol, as single carbon source, and cycloheximide. The inclusion of bromocresol green evidenced acid-producing strains. The inclusion of p-coumaric acid, substrate for the production of 4-ethylphenol, enabled the differentiation by smell of Dekkera/Brettanomyces sp. from all other yeast species growing in the medium. The medium was used either by plating after membrane filtration or by the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique. In 29 white and 88 red randomly collected wines, these yeasts were found only in red wines at levels up to 2500 MPN ml±1, but constituted less than 1% of the total microbial flora. In red wines, 84% showed detectable amounts of 4-ethylphenol up to 4430 lg l±1 while 28% of the white wines showed detectable levels up to 403 lg l±1. Conclusions: The use of the medium proposed in this work evidenced the presence of low relative populations of Dekkera/Brettanomyces sp. even in wines contaminated by fast-growing yeasts and moulds. Significance and Impact of the Study: Further ecological studies on Dekkera/Brettanomyces sp. should take into account the use of highly specific culture media in order to establish their true occurrence in natur

Optimal Controller Identification for multivariable non-minimum phase systems

This paper extends the formulation of a data-driven control method - the Optimal Controller Identification (OCI) - to cope with non-minimum phase (NMP) systems, without a priori knowledge of the NMP transmission zero, i.e. without obtaining a prior model of the plant - as in any data-driven approach. The method is based on the Model Reference paradigm, in which the desired closed-loop performance is specified by means of a closed-loop transfer function - the reference model. Considering a convenient parametrization of the latter and a flexible performance criterion, it is possible to identify the NMP transmission zeros of the plant along with the optimal controller parameters, as it will be shown. Both diagonal and block-triangular reference model structures are treated in detail. Simulation examples show the effectiveness of the proposed approach

Same-Sign Taus Signatures of Maximally Flavor-Violating Scalars at the LHC

We explore single and double flavor-violating scalars (flavons) production at the 13 and 14 TeV LHC in an effective field theory formulation where flavons always change the flavor of Standard Model fermions. When those scalars couple to mass, their flavor-changing couplings to top quarks and tau leptons are favored. Focusing on the mass region below the top quark mass, we find couplings that fit the muon and electron (g−2)(g-2) discrepancies and avoid several current experimental constraints. We determine the potential of the LHC to exclude or discover such a new physics scenario with clean signatures consisting of same-sign tau leptons and the simultaneous observation of resonances in the tau plus electron or muon invariant mass. We found that in the double production mode, effective couplings down to order 10−210^{-2} TeV−1^{-1} can be probed for flavon masses in the 10-170 GeV range at the HL-LHC at 14 TeV, but couplings down to 0.1 TeV−1^{-1} can be excluded at 95\% confidence level with data collected by the 13 TeV LHC in the same mass interval.Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, 2 table
