In Romania, the crisis of the popular culture and the necessity to preserve its characteristic elements by publishing a Romanian Ethnographic Atlas was realized later. The Romanian ethnographers had the possibility to make major methodological innovation for this type of works, such as the replacement of the explicative texts of the maps with the integral publishing of the ethnographic documents, exactly as they were recorded on the field. These two works – thesaurus which shelter the registered for the XX century ethnographic data will have, when finished, 30 toms: 25 with document of oral history and five with maps and images regarding their territorial distribution.În România criza culturii populare şi necesitatea de a păstra elementele ei caracteristice prin publicarea Atlasului Etnografic Român s-a constatat mai târziu.

A problem of natural vibrations of orthotropic cylindrical shells under various boundary conditions of its end-faces within the framework of the Mindlin–Timoshenko theory and on the basis of 3-D elasticity theory is considered. Using the method of spline-approximation and collocation, the problems are solved by the steady-state numerical method of discrete orthogonalization with incremental search. The comparison of the frequencies of cylindrical shells with different boundary conditions on their ends within various models is performed

A CD36 ectodomain mediates insect pheromone detection via a putative tunnelling mechanism.

CD36 transmembrane proteins have diverse roles in lipid uptake, cell adhesion and pathogen sensing. Despite numerous in vitro studies, how they act in native cellular contexts is poorly understood. A Drosophila CD36 homologue, sensory neuron membrane protein 1 (SNMP1), was previously shown to facilitate detection of lipid-derived pheromones by their cognate receptors in olfactory cilia. Here we investigate how SNMP1 functions in vivo. Structure-activity dissection demonstrates that SNMP1's ectodomain is essential, but intracellular and transmembrane domains dispensable, for cilia localization and pheromone-evoked responses. SNMP1 can be substituted by mammalian CD36, whose ectodomain can interact with insect pheromones. Homology modelling, using the mammalian LIMP-2 structure as template, reveals a putative tunnel in the SNMP1 ectodomain that is sufficiently large to accommodate pheromone molecules. Amino-acid substitutions predicted to block this tunnel diminish pheromone sensitivity. We propose a model in which SNMP1 funnels hydrophobic pheromones from the extracellular fluid to integral membrane receptors

    D-Brane Chemistry

We study several different kinds of bound states built from D-branes and orientifolds. These states are to atoms what branonium - the bound state of a brane and its anti-brane - is to positronium, inasmuch as they typically involve a light brane bound to a much heavier object with conserved charges which forbid the system's decay. We find the fully relativistic motion of a probe Dp'-brane in the presence of source Dp-branes is integrable by quadratures. Keplerian conic sections are obtained for special choices for p and p' and the systems are shown to be equivalent to nonrelativistic systems. Their quantum behaviour is also equivalent to the corresponding non-relativistic limit. In particular the p=6, p'=0 case is equivalent to a non-relativistic dyon in a magnetic monopole background, with the trajectories in the surface of a cone. We also show that the motion of the probe branes about D6-branes in IIA theory is equivalent to the motion of the corresponding probes in the uplift to M-theory in 11 dimensions, for which there are no D6-branes but their fields are replaced by a particular Taub-NUT geometry. We further discuss the interactions of D-branes and orientifold planes having the same dimension. this system behaves at large distances as a brane-brane system but at shorter distances it does not have the tachyon instability.Comment: ref. added and typos correcte

On the Initial Conditions for Brane Inflation

String theory gives rise to various mechanisms to generate primordial inflation, of which ``brane inflation'' is one of the most widely considered. In this scenario, inflation takes place while two branes are approaching each other, and the modulus field representing the separation between the branes plays the role of the inflaton field. We study the phase space of initial conditions which can lead to a sufficiently long period of cosmological inflation, and find that taking into account the possibility of nonvanishing initial momentum can significantly change the degree of fine tuning of the required initial conditions.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

Electromagnetic vertex function of the pion at T > 0

The matrix element of the electromagnetic current between pion states is calculated in quenched lattice QCD at a temperature of T=0.93TcT = 0.93 T_c. The nonperturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action is used together with the corresponding O(a){\cal O}(a) improved vector current. The electromagnetic vertex function is extracted for pion masses down to 360MeV360 {\rm MeV} and momentum transfers Q22.7GeV2Q^2 \le 2.7 {\rm GeV}^2.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

The Morphology of N=6 Chern-Simons Theory

We tabulate various properties of the language of N=6 Chern-Simons Theory, in the sense of Polyakov. Specifically we enumerate and compute character formulas for all syllables of up to four letters, i.e. all irreducible representations of OSp(6|4) built from up to four fundamental fields of the ABJM theory. We also present all tensor product decompositions for up to four singletons and list the (cyclically invariant) four-letter words, which correspond to single-trace operators of length four. As an application of these results we use the two-loop dilatation operator to compute the leading correction to the Hagedorn temperature of the weakly-coupled planar ABJM theory on R \times S^2.Comment: 41 pages, 1 figure; v2: minor correction

Isospin Violation in tau -> 3 pi nu_tau

Isospin violating signals in the tau -> 3 pi nu_tau decay mode are discussed. For the tau -> pi^- pi^- pi^+ nu_tau decay mode, isospin violation arises from the vector current contribution in the tau -> omega pi nu_tau decay with the subsequent isospin violating omega decay into pi^+ pi^-. We demonstrate that such effects may be observed in presently available data through the measurement of the interference effects of these vector current contributions with the dominating axial vector current, i.e. through a measurement of the structure functions W_F,W_G,W_H and W_I. In the case of the tau -> pi^0 pi^0 pi^- nu_tau decay mode, a vector current contribution is generated by eta pi mixing in the decay chain tau -> eta rho nu_tau -> pi^0 pi^0 pi^- nu_tau. We find that this effect is rather small, the magnitude of the associated interference terms being too low for present statistics.Comment: LaTex, 16 pages, 5 figures. Approach to ergodicity in quantum wave functions

According to theorems of Shnirelman and followers, in the semiclassical limit the quantum wavefunctions of classically ergodic systems tend to the microcanonical density on the energy shell. We here develop a semiclassical theory that relates the rate of approach to the decay of certain classical fluctuations. For uniformly hyperbolic systems we find that the variance of the quantum matrix elements is proportional to the variance of the integral of the associated classical operator over trajectory segments of length THT_H, and inversely proportional to TH2T_H^2, where TH=hρˉT_H=h\bar\rho is the Heisenberg time, ρˉ\bar\rho being the mean density of states. Since for these systems the classical variance increases linearly with THT_H, the variance of the matrix elements decays like 1/TH1/T_H. For non-hyperbolic systems, like Hamiltonians with a mixed phase space and the stadium billiard, our results predict a slower decay due to sticking in marginally unstable regions. Numerical computations supporting these conclusions are presented for the bakers map and the hydrogen atom in a magnetic field.Comment: 11 pages postscript and 4 figures in two files, tar-compressed and uuencoded using uufiles, to appear in Phys Rev E.
