    Helmholtz resonance in a piezoelectric–hydraulic pump-based hybrid actuator

    This paper demonstrates that a hydraulically acting Helmholtz resonator can exist in a piezoelectric–hydraulic pump (PHP) based hybrid actuator, which in turn affects the volumetric efficiency of the PHP. The simulation and experimental results illustrate the effect of Helmholtz resonance on the flow rate performance of the PHP. The study also shows how to shift the Helmholtz resonant frequency to a higher value through changing parameters such as the cylinder diameter and the effective bulk modulus of the working fluid, which will improve the volumetric efficiency and broaden the operating frequency range of the PHP actuator.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/90809/1/0964-1726_20_1_015010.pd

    Switching sliding mode force tracking control of piezoelectric-hydraulic pump-based friction element actuation systems for automotive transmissions

    In this study, a nonlinear sliding-mode controller is designed for force tracking of a piezoelectric-hydraulic pump (PHP)-based actuation system, which is developed to replace the current electro-hydraulic actuation systems for automatic transmission (AT) friction elements, such as band brakes or clutches. By utilizing the PHP, one can eliminate the various hydraulic components (oil pump, regulating valve and control valve) in current ATs and achieve a simpler configuration with more efficient operation. With the derived governing equation of motion of the PHP-based actuation system integrated with the friction element (band brake), a switching control law is synthesized based on the sliding-mode theory. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed control law, its force tracking performance for the engagement of a friction element during an AT ##IMG## [http://ej.iop.org/images/0964-1726/18/8/085004/sms306895ieqn1.gif] {1 to 2} up-shift is examined experimentally. It is shown that one can successfully track the desired force trajectory for AT shift control with small tracking error.     A new Al-Zr-Ti master alloy for ultrasonic grain refinement of wrought and foundry aluminum alloys

    A new grain refiner master alloy based on the Al-Zr-Ti system was prepared by salt assisted synthesis. 90% of Al3Zr particles in the master alloy were ranged between 1 and 13 ÎĽm. 80% reduction of grain size was observed with the addition of 0.2wt% Zr equivalent master alloy combined with ultrasonic treatment in an Al alloy.     Mechanism of inhibitory effect of atorvastatin on resistin expression induced by tumor necrosis factor-α in macrophages

    Atorvastatin has been shown to reduce resistin expression in macrophages after pro-inflammatory stimulation. However, the mechanism of reducing resistin expression by atorvastatin is not known. Therefore, we sought to investigate the molecular mechanisms of atorvastatin for reducing resistin expression after proinflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) stimulation in cultured macrophages. Cultured macrophages were obtained from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. TNF-α stimulation increased resistin protein and mRNA expression and atorvastatin inhibited the induction of resistin by TNF-α. Addition of mevalonate induced resistin protein expression similar to TNF-α stimulation. However, atorvastatin did not have effect on resistin protein expression induced by mevalonate. SP600125 and JNK small interfering RNA (siRNA) completely attenuated the resistin protein expression induced by TNF-α and mevalonate. TNF-α induced phosphorylation of Rac, while atorvastatin and Rac-1 inhibitor inhibited the phosphorylation of Rac induced by TNF-α. The gel shift and promoter activity assay showed that TNF-α increased AP-1-binding activity and resistin promoter activity, while SP600125 and atorvastatin inhibited the AP-1-binding activity and resistin promoter activity induced by TNF-α. Recombinant resistin and TNF-α significantly reduced glucose uptake in cultured macrophages, while atorvastatin reversed the reduced glucose uptake by TNF-α. In conclusion, JNK and Rac pathway mediates the inhibitory effect of atorvastatin on resistin expression induced by TNF-α

    Tumor necrosis factor-α enhances hyperbaric oxygen-induced visfatin expression via JNK pathway in human coronary arterial endothelial cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Visfatin, a adipocytokine with insulin-mimetic effect, plays a role in endothelial angiogenesis. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has been used in medical practice. However, the molecular mechanism of beneficial effects of HBO is poorly understood. We sought to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of regulation of visfatin by HBO in human coronary arterial endothelial cells (CAECs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Human CAECs were exposed to 2.5 atmosphere absolute (ATA) of oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber. Western blot, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and promoter activity assay were performed. In vitro glucose uptake and tube formation was detected.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Visfatin protein (2.55-fold) and mRNA (2.53-fold) expression were significantly increased after exposure to 2.5 ATA HBO for 4 to 6 h. Addition of SP600125 and JNK siRNA 30 min before HBO inhibited the induction of visfatin protein. HBO also significantly increased DNA-protein binding activity of AP-1 and visfatin promoter activity. Addition of SP600125 and TNF-α monoclonal antibody 30 min before HBO abolished the DNA-protein binding activity and visfatin promoter activity induced by HBO. HBO significantly increased secretion of TNF-α from cultured human CAECs. Exogenous addition of TNF-α significantly increased visfatin protein expression while TNF-α antibody and TNF-α receptor antibody blocked the induction of visfatin protein expression induced by HBO. HBO increased glucose uptake in human CAECs as HBO and visfatin siRNA and TNF-α antibody attenuated the glucose uptake induced by HBO. HBO significantly increased the tube formation of human CAECs while visfatin siRNA, TNF-α antibody inhibited the tube formation induced by HBO.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>HBO activates visfatin expression in cultured human CAECs. HBO-induced visfatin is mediated by TNF-α and at least in part through JNK pathway.</p

    Minimum Wage and Unemployment: Evidence from Russia

    This paper investigates the unemployment effects of the Russian minimum-wage policy. The results suggest that higher minimum wages slightly increase unemployment rates among young workers but do not affect the older workforce. The textbook theory of producer is employed to rationalize the findings, showing that the magnitude of employment responses to minimum wages is associated with the elasticity of capital-labor substitution. Moreover, industries employ more workers informally if they cannot exercise capital-labor substitution easily. In line with the revealed unemployment among youth and informalization of the economy induced by the intervention, the findings show limited income effects of the policy
