Partially Supersymmetric Composite Higgs Models
We study the idea of the Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson within the
framework of partial supersymmetry in Randall-Sundrum scenarios and their CFT
duals. The Higgs and third generation of the MSSM are composites arising from a
strongly coupled supersymmetric CFT with global symmetry SO(5) spontaneously
broken to SO(4), whilst the light generations and gauge fields are elementary
degrees of freedom whose couplings to the strong sector explicitly break the
global symmetry as well as supersymmetry. The presence of supersymmetry in the
strong sector may allow the compositeness scale to be raised to ~10 TeV without
fine tuning, consistent with the bounds from precision electro-weak
measurements and flavour physics. The supersymmetric flavour problem is also
solved. At low energies, this scenario reduces to the "More Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model" where only stops, Higgsinos and gauginos are
light and within reach of the LHC.Comment: 28 pages. v2 minor changes and Refs. adde
IL-22 mediates goblet cell hyperplasia and worm expulsion in intestinal helminth infection.
Type 2 immune responses are essential in protection against intestinal helminth infections. In this study we show that IL-22, a cytokine important in defence against bacterial infections in the intestinal tract, is also a critical mediator of anti-helminth immunity. After infection with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, a rodent hookworm, IL-22-deficient mice showed impaired worm expulsion despite normal levels of type 2 cytokine production. The impaired worm expulsion correlated with reduced goblet cell hyperplasia and reduced expression of goblet cell markers. We further confirmed our findings in a second nematode model, the murine whipworm Trichuris muris. T.muris infected IL-22-deficient mice had a similar phenotype to that seen in N.brasiliensis infection, with impaired worm expulsion and reduced goblet cell hyperplasia. Ex vivo and in vitro analysis demonstrated that IL-22 is able to directly induce the expression of several goblet cell markers, including mucins. Taken together, our findings reveal that IL-22 plays an important role in goblet cell activation, and thus, a key role in anti-helminth immunity
SUSY Splits, But Then Returns
We study the phenomenon of accidental or "emergent" supersymmetry within
gauge theory and connect it to the scenarios of Split Supersymmetry and Higgs
compositeness. Combining these elements leads to a significant refinement and
extension of the proposal of Partial Supersymmetry, in which supersymmetry is
broken at very high energies but with a remnant surviving to the weak scale.
The Hierarchy Problem is then solved by a non-trivial partnership between
supersymmetry and compositeness, giving a promising approach for reconciling
Higgs naturalness with the wealth of precision experimental data. We discuss
aspects of this scenario from the AdS/CFT dual viewpoint of higher-dimensional
warped compactification. It is argued that string theory constructions with
high scale supersymmetry breaking which realize warped/composite solutions to
the Hierarchy Problem may well be accompanied by some or all of the features
described. The central phenomenological considerations and expectations are
discussed, with more detailed modelling within warped effective field theory
reserved for future work.Comment: 29 pages. Flavor and CP constraints on left-right symmetric structure

Down regulation of E-Cadherin (ECAD) - a predictor for occult metastatic disease in sentinel node biopsy of early squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and oropharynx
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prognostic factors in predicting occult lymph node metastasis in patients with head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are necessary to improve the results of the sentinel lymph node procedure in this tumour type. Non-standard interactions versus non-unitary lepton flavor mixing at a neutrino factory
The impact of heavy mediators on neutrino oscillations is typically described
by non-standard four-fermion interactions (NSIs) or non-unitarity (NU). We
focus on leptonic dimension-six effective operators which do not produce
charged lepton flavor violation. These operators lead to particular
correlations among neutrino production, propagation, and detection non-standard
effects. We point out that these NSIs and NU phenomenologically lead, in fact,
to very similar effects for a neutrino factory, for completely different
fundamental reasons. We discuss how the parameters and probabilities are
related in this case, and compare the sensitivities. We demonstrate that the
NSIs and NU can, in principle, be distinguished for large enough effects at the
example of non-standard effects in the --sector, which basically
corresponds to differentiating between scalars and fermions as heavy mediators
as leading order effect. However, we find that a near detector at superbeams
could provide very synergistic information, since the correlation between
source and matter NSIs is broken for hadronic neutrino production, while NU is
a fundamental effect present at any experiment.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures. Final version published in JHEP. v3: Typo in Eq.

Charming CP Violation and Dipole Operators from RS Flavor Anarchy
Recently the LHCb collaboration reported evidence for direct CP violation in
charm decays. The value is sufficiently large that either substantially
enhanced Standard Model contributions or non-Standard Model physics is required
to explain it. In the latter case only a limited number of possibilities would
be consistent with other existing flavor-changing constraints. We show that
warped extra dimensional models that explain the quark spectrum through flavor
anarchy can naturally give rise to contributions of the size required to
explain the the LHCb result. The D meson asymmetry arises through a sizable
CP-violating contribution to a chromomagnetic dipole operator. This happens
naturally without introducing inconsistencies with existing constraints in the
up quark sector. We discuss some subtleties in the loop calculation that are
similar to those in Higgs to \gamma\gamma. Loop-induced dipole operators in
warped scenarios and their composite analogs exhibit non-trivial dependence on
the Higgs profile, with the contributions monotonically decreasing when the
Higgs is pushed away from the IR brane. We show that the size of the dipole
operator quickly saturates as the Higgs profile approaches the IR brane,
implying small dependence on the precise details of the Higgs profile when it
is quasi IR localized. We also explain why the calculation of the coefficient
of the lowest dimension 5D operator is guaranteed to be finite. This is true
not only in the charm sector but also with other radiative processes such as
electric dipole moments, b to s\gamma, \epsilon'/\epsilon_K and \mu\ to
e\gamma. We furthermore discuss the interpretation of this contribution within
the framework of partial compositeness in four dimensions and highlight some
qualitative differences between the generic result of composite models and that
obtained for dynamics that reproduces the warped scenario.Comment: 14 page
FCNC Effects in a Minimal Theory of Fermion Masses
As a minimal theory of fermion masses we extend the SM by heavy vectorlike
fermions, with flavor-anarchical Yukawa couplings, that mix with chiral
fermions such that small SM Yukawa couplings arise from small mixing angles.
This model can be regarded as an effective description of the fermionic sector
of a large class of existing flavor models and thus might serve as a useful
reference frame for a further understanding of flavor hierarchies in the SM.
Already such a minimal framework gives rise to FCNC effects through exchange of
massive SM bosons whose couplings to the light fermions get modified by the
mixing. We derive general formulae for these corrections and discuss the bounds
on the heavy fermion masses. Particularly stringent bounds, in a few TeV range,
come from the corrections to the Z couplings.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur
Non-global Structure of the O({\alpha}_s^2) Dijet Soft Function
High energy scattering processes involving jets generically involve matrix
elements of light- like Wilson lines, known as soft functions. These describe
the structure of soft contributions to observables and encode color and
kinematic correlations between jets. We compute the dijet soft function to
O({\alpha}_s^2) as a function of the two jet invariant masses, focusing on
terms not determined by its renormalization group evolution that have a
non-separable dependence on these masses. Our results include non-global single
and double logarithms, and analytic results for the full set of non-logarithmic
contributions as well. Using a recent result for the thrust constant, we
present the complete O({\alpha}_s^2) soft function for dijet production in both
position and momentum space.Comment: 55 pages, 8 figures. v2: extended discussion of double logs in the

A natural little hierarchy for RS from accidental SUSY
We use supersymmetry to address the little hierarchy problem in
Randall-Sundrum models by naturally generating a hierarchy between the IR scale
and the electroweak scale. Supersymmetry is broken on the UV brane which
triggers the stabilization of the warped extra dimension at an IR scale of
order 10 TeV. The Higgs and top quark live near the IR brane whereas light
fermion generations are localized towards the UV brane. Supersymmetry breaking
causes the first two sparticle generations to decouple, thereby avoiding the
supersymmetric flavour and CP problems, while an accidental R-symmetry protects
the gaugino mass. The resulting low-energy sparticle spectrum consists of
stops, gauginos and Higgsinos which are sufficient to stabilize the little
hierarchy between the IR scale and the electroweak scale. Finally, the
supersymmetric little hierarchy problem is ameliorated by introducing a singlet
Higgs field on the IR brane.Comment: 37 pages, 3 figures; v2: minor corrections, version published in JHE
Composite Leptoquarks at the LHC
If electroweak symmetry breaking arises via strongly-coupled physics, the
observed suppression of flavour-changing processes suggests that fermion masses
should arise via mixing of elementary fermions with composite fermions of the
strong sector. The strong sector then carries colour charge, and may contain
composite leptoquark states, arising either as TeV scale resonances, or even as
light, pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The latter, since they are coupled to
colour, get a mass of the order of several hundred GeV, beyond the reach of
current searches at the Tevatron. The same generic mechanism that suppresses
flavour-changing processes suppresses leptoquark-mediated rare processes,
making it conceivable that the many stringent constraints may be evaded. The
leptoquarks couple predominantly to third-generation quarks and leptons, and
the prospects for discovery at LHC appear to be good. As an illustration, a
model based on the Pati-Salam symmetry is described, and its embedding in
models with a larger symmetry incorporating unification of gauge couplings,
which provide additional motivation for leptoquark states at or below the TeV
scale, is discussed.Comment: 10 pp, version to appear in JHE
