    On the Impact of Link Layer Retransmissions on TCP for Aeronautical Communications

    In this article, we evaluate the impact of link layer retransmissions on the performance of TCP in the context of aeronautical communications.We present the architecture of aeronautical networks, which is manly driven by an important channel access delay, and the various retransmission strategies that can be implemented at both link and transport layers. We consider a worst case scenario to illustrate the benefits provided by the ARQ scheme at the link layer in terms of transmission delay.We evaluate the trade-off between allowing a fast data transmission and a low usage of satellite capacity by adjusting link layer parameters

    Disease recurrence and rejection following liver transplantation for autoimmune chronic active liver disease

    Autoimmune chronic active liver disease (ACALD), a major indication for liver transplantation, is associated strongly with antigenic determinants HLA-B8 and DR3. A retrospective analysis of 43 patients who underwent OLTx for putative ACALD and who, as well as their tissue organ donors, were typed, was performed. Disease recurrence and graft rejection episodes were determined by chart review and histopathological review of all material available. Disease recurrence was histologically documented in 11 (25.6%) of these 43 cases. Graft rejection episodes occurred in 24 (66.8%). All recurrences were in recipients of HLA-DR3-negative grafts. Nine of the recurrences were in HLA-DR3-poeitive recipients (odds ratio: 6.14, P<0.03). Two of 11 cases of disease recurrence were in recipients who were HLA-DR3-negative. Nine of these 11 had received HLA-DR3-negative grafts. Rejection occurred in 13 HLA-B8-positive recipients, 12 of whom received HLA-B8-negative grafts. Eleven HLA-B8-negative recipients experienced at least one rejection episode and 9 of these had received HLA-B8-negative grafts. Based upon these data we conclude: 1) that recurrence of putative ACALD is more likely to occur in HLA-DR3-positive recipients of HLA-DR3-negative grafts; (2) that recurrences were not seen in recipients of HLA-DR3-positive grafts; (3) that BXA-B8 status does not affect disease recurrence; and (4) that neither the HLA-B8 nor the DR3 status of the graft or recipient has an effect on the observed frequency of rejection. ©1992 by Williams & Wilkins

    Glauber theory of initial- and final-state interactions in (p,2p) scattering

    We develop the Glauber theory description of initial- and final-state interactions (IFSI) in quasielastic A(p,2p) scattering. We study the IFSI-distortion effects both for the inclusive and exclusive conditions. In inclusive reaction the important new effect is an interaction between the two sets of the trajectories which enter the calculation of IFSI-distorted one-body density matrix for inclusive (p,2p) scattering and are connected with incoherent elastic rescatterings of the initial and final protons on spectator nucleons. We demonstrate that IFSI-distortions of the missing momentum distribution are large over the whole range of missing momentum both for inclusive and exclusive reactions and affect in a crucial way the interpretation of the BNL data on (p,2p) scattering. Our numerical results show that in the region of missing momentum p_{m}\lsim 100-150 MeV/c the incoherent IFSI increase nuclear transparency by 5-10\%.     Spectroscopic confirmation of a substantial population of luminous red galaxies at redshifts z ≳ 2

    We confirm spectroscopically the existence of a population of galaxies at z greater than or similar to 2 with rest-frame optical colors similar to normal nearby galaxies. The galaxies were identified by their red near-infrared colors in deep images obtained with the Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera on the Very Large Telescope of the field around the foreground cluster MS 1054-03. Redshifts of six galaxies with J(s)-K-s > 2.3 were measured from optical spectra obtained with the W. M. Keck telescope. Five out of six are in the range, demonstrating that the 2.43 = z = 3.52 J(s)-K-s color selection is quite efficient. The rest-frame ultraviolet spectra of confirmed z > 2 galaxies display a range of properties, with two galaxies showing emission lines characteristic of active galactic nuclei, two having Lyalpha in emission, and one showing interstellar absorption lines only. Their full spectral energy distributions are well described by constant star formation models with ages 1.4-2.6 Gyr, except for one galaxy whose colors indicate a dusty starburst. The confirmed z > 2 galaxies are very luminous: their K-s magnitudes are in the range 19.2-19.9, corresponding to rest-frame absolute V magnitudes from -24.8 to -23.2. Assuming that our bright spectroscopic sample is representative for the general population of J(s)-K-s selected objects, we find that the surface density of red z greater than or similar to 2 galaxies is approximate to0.9 arcmin(-2) to K-s = 21. The surface density is comparable to that of Lyman break-selected galaxies with K-s < 21, when corrections are made for the different redshift distributions of the two samples. Although there will be some overlap between the two populations, most "optical-break" galaxies are too faint in the rest-frame ultraviolet to be selected as Lyman break galaxies. The most straightforward interpretation is that star formation in typical optical-break galaxies started earlier than in typical Lyman break galaxies. Optical-break galaxies may be the oldest and most massive galaxies yet identified at, and they z 1 2 could evolve into early-type galaxies and bulges

    The fundamental plane of cluster elliptical galaxies at z=1.25

    Using deep Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging and Very Large Telescope FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph 2 spectra, we determined the velocity dispersions, effective radii, and surface brightnesses for four early-type galaxies in the z = 1.237 cluster RDCS 1252.9 - 2927. All four galaxies are massive, greater than 10(11) M-.. These four galaxies, combined with three from RDCS 0848 + 4453 at z = 1.276, establish the fundamental plane of massive early-type cluster galaxies at (z) over bar = 1.25. The offset of the fundamental plane shows that the luminosity evolution in rest-frame B is Deltaln(M/L-B) = (-0.98 +/- 0.06)z for galaxies with M > 10(11.5) M-.. To reproduce the observed mass-to-light ratio (M/L) evolution, we determine the characteristic age of the stars in these M > 10(11.5) M-. galaxies to be 3.0(-0.3)(+0.3) Gyr; i.e., z* = 3.4(-0.4)(+0.5). Including selection effects caused by morphological bias (the "progenitor bias"), we estimate an age of 2.1(-0.2)(+0.2) Gyr, or z* = 2.3(-0.2)(+0.2) for the elliptical galaxy population. Massive cluster early-type galaxies appear to have a large fraction of stars that formed early in the history of the universe. However, there is a large scatter in the derived M/L values, which is confirmed by the spread in the galaxies' colors. Two lower mass galaxies in our sample have much lower values, implying significant star formation close to the epoch of observation. Thus, even in the centers of massive clusters, there appears to have been significant star formation in some massive, M similar or equal to 10(11) M-., galaxies at z similar or equal to 1.

    Spectroscopy of z ∼ 6 i-dropout galaxies : frequency of Lyα emission and the sizes of Lyα-emitting galaxies

    We report on deep spectroscopy, using LRIS on Keck I and FORS2 on the VLT, of a sample of 22 candidate z similar to 6 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) selected by the (i)775 - z(850) > 1: 3 dropout criterion. Redshifts could be measured for eight objects. These redshifts are all in the range z = 5: 5-6.1, confirming the efficiency of the i775 - z850 color selection technique. Six of the confirmed galaxies show Ly alpha emission. Assuming that the 14 objects without redshifts are z similar to 6 LBGs that lack detectable Ly alpha emission lines, we infer that the fraction of Ly alpha-emitting LBGs with Ly alpha equivalent widths greater than 20 angstrom among z similar to 6 LBGs is approximate to 30%, similar to that found at z similar to 3. Every Ly alpha-emitting object in our sample is compact, with half-light radii r(hl) 97% confidence. We speculate that the small sizes of the Ly alpha-emitting LBGs are due to these objects being less massive than other LBGs at z similar to 6

    Published onlineJournal ArticleReviewSince its emergence in the 1990s, White Spot Disease (WSD) has had major economic and societal impact in the crustacean aquaculture sector. Over the years shrimp farming alone has experienced billion dollar losses through WSD. The disease is caused by the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), a large dsDNA virus and the only member of the Nimaviridae family. Susceptibility to WSSV in a wide range of crustacean hosts makes it a major risk factor in the translocation of live animals and in commodity products. Currently there are no effective treatments for this disease. Understanding the molecular basis of disease processes has contributed significantly to the treatment of many human and animal pathogens, and with a similar aim considerable efforts have been directed towards understanding host-pathogen molecular interactions for WSD. Work on the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis in aquatic crustaceans has been restricted by a lack of sequenced and annotated genomes for host species. Nevertheless, some of the key host-pathogen interactions have been established: between viral envelope proteins and host cell receptors at initiation of infection, involvement of various immune system pathways in response to WSSV, and the roles of various host and virus miRNAs in mitigation or progression of disease. Despite these advances, many fundamental knowledge gaps remain; for example, the roles of the majority of WSSV proteins are still unknown.     New evidence for a massive black hole at the centre of the quiescent galaxy M32

    Massive black holes are thought to reside at the centres of many galaxies, where they power quasars and active galactic nuclei. But most galaxies are quiescent, indicating that any central massive black hole present will be starved of fuel and therefore detectable only through its gravitational influence on the motions of the surrounding stars. M32 is a nearby, quiescent elliptical galaxy in which the presence of a black hole has been suspected; however, the limited resolution of the observational data and the restricted classes of models used to interpret this data have made it difficult to rule out alternative explanations, such as models with an anisotropic stellar velocity distribution and no dark mass or models with a central concentration of dark objects (for example, stellar remnants or brown dwarfs). Here we present high-resolution optical HST spectra of M32, which show that the stellar velocities near the centre of this galaxy exceed those inferred from previous ground-based observations. We use a range of general dynamical models to determine a central dark mass concentration of (3.4 +/- 1.6) x 10^6 solar masses, contained within a region only 0.3 pc across. This leaves a massive black hole as the most plausible explanation of the data, thereby strengthening the view that such black holes exist even in quiescent galaxies.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures; mpeg animation of the stellar motions in M32 available at http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/Anim.htm

    De novo assembly of the Carcinus maenas transcriptome and characterization of innate immune system pathways.

    Journal ArticleCopyright © 2015 Verbruggen et al.BACKGROUND: The European shore crab, Carcinus maenas, is used widely in biomonitoring, ecotoxicology and for studies into host-pathogen interactions. It is also an important invasive species in numerous global locations. However, the genomic resources for this organism are still sparse, limiting research progress in these fields. To address this resource shortfall we produced a C. maenas transcriptome, enabled by the progress in next-generation sequencing technologies, and applied this to assemble information on the innate immune system in this species. RESULTS: We isolated and pooled RNA for twelve different tissues and organs from C. maenas individuals and sequenced the RNA using next generation sequencing on an Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform. After de novo assembly a transcriptome was generated encompassing 212,427 transcripts (153,699 loci). The transcripts were filtered, annotated and characterised using a variety of tools (including BLAST, MEGAN and RSEM) and databases (including NCBI, Gene Ontology and KEGG). There were differential patterns of expression for between 1,223 and 2,741 transcripts across tissues and organs with over-represented Gene Ontology terms relating to their specific function. Based on sequence homology to immune system components in other organisms, we show both the presence of transcripts for a series of known pathogen recognition receptors and response proteins that form part of the innate immune system, and transcripts representing the RNAi, Toll-like receptor signalling, IMD and JAK/STAT pathways. CONCLUSIONS: We have produced an assembled transcriptome for C. maenas that provides a significant molecular resource for wide ranging studies in this species.
