    Role of DNA methylation in head and neck cancer

    Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a heterogenous and complex entity including diverse anatomical sites and a variety of tumor types displaying unique characteristics and different etilogies. Both environmental and genetic factors play a role in the development of the disease, but the underlying mechanism is still far from clear. Previous studies suggest that alterations in the genes acting in cellular signal pathways may contribute to head and neck carcinogenesis. In cancer, DNA methylation patterns display specific aberrations even in the early and precancerous stages and may confer susceptibility to further genetic or epigenetic changes. Silencing of the genes by hypermethylation or induction of oncogenes by promoter hypomethylation are frequent mechanisms in different types of cancer and achieve increasing diagnostic and therapeutic importance since the changes are reversible. Therefore, methylation analysis may provide promising clinical applications, including the development of new biomarkers and prediction of the therapeutic response or prognosis.     Mitigating humanitarian crises during non-international armed conflicts:the role of human rights and ceasefire agreements

    Situations of humanitarian crisis are often caused by armed conflicts. Given the prevalence of non-international armed conflicts today, ways of ameliorating these situations are at the forefront of concerns. The international humanitarian law rules governing non-international armed conflict remain much less developed than those for international armed conflicts. This is exacerbated by the lack of direct human rights obligations for non-state armed groups, which makes governing the behaviour of non-state parties to non-international armed conflicts (non-state armed groups) even more challenging. Although several initiatives have been taken to encourage non-state actors to mitigate situations of humanitarian crisis, the role of human rights law is in need of further clarification. The paper aims to assess what role human rights may have in improving humanitarian crises, suggesting one specific way: The paper will first discuss the international laws applicable to situations of non-international armed conflict, before critically analysing some of the initiatives that have already been taken to govern the behaviour of non-state armed groups. Part 3 will assess the possibility of using cease-fire agreements to impose specific human rights obligations on all parties to a non-international armed conflict. Finally, a conclusion will be drawn in Part 4 as to the role that human rights and ceasefire agreements could have during humanitarian crises

    Bond between powder type self-compacting concrete and steel reinforcement

    The paper reports an investigation on the bond behavior between steel reinforcement and powder-type self-compacting concrete (SCC). A total of 135 pull-out cubes were cast by using four self-compacting mixes (SCC) and two vibrated concretes (VC). The main analyzed parameters were the concrete compressive strength, the reinforcement bar diameter, the embedded length of bars and cement/limestone ratio. The results showed that the ultimate bond strength can be greater in self-compacting concrete compared to vibrated concrete. At the same load level the bars in SCC tend to present a smaller slip than in VC. Considering the influence of bar diameter and embedded length, it seems that SCC and VC behave in a similar way. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
