Optical And Nonoptical Aids For Reading And Writing In Individuals With Acquired Low Vision

Purpose: To evaluate the use of optical and nonoptical aids during reading and writing activities in individuals with acquired low vision. Methods: This study was performed using descriptive and cross-sectional surveys. The data collection instrument was created with structured questions that were developed from an exploratory study and a previous test based on interviews, and it evaluated the following variables: personal characteristics, use of optical and nonoptical aids, and activities that required the use of optical and nonoptical aids. Results: The study population included 30 subjects with acquired low vision and visual acuities of 20/200-20/400. Most subjects reported the use of some optical aids (60.0%). Of these 60.0%, the majority (83.3%) cited spectacles as the most widely used optical aid. The majority (63.3%) of subjects also reported the use of nonoptical aids, the most frequent ones being letter magnification (68.4%), followed by bringing the objects closer to the eyes (57.8%). Subjects often used more than one nonoptical aid. Conclusions: The majority of participants reported the use of optical and nonoptical aids during reading activities, highlighting the use of spectacles, magnifying glasses, and letter magnification; however, even after the use of these aids, we found that the subjects often needed to read the text more than once to understand it. The major goals of this study were to learn about low vision students' perception about their visual difficulties, their opinion about their relationship with the school community and the use of Assistive Technology resources in daily activities. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was performed through a structured interview in 2010, applied to 19 students between 12 and 17 years enrolled in junior high and high school who used to attend visual intervention and rehabilitation programs in Campinas and Ribeirão Preto. It was noted that 94.7% of the participants presented congenital low vision and 5.3% presented acquired low vision problems, considering that 52.6% were female students and 47.4% were male. The results showed that 94.7% had visual difficulties at school, especially related to seeing the blackboard (33.3%), reading dictionaries (22.2%) and book reading (16.7%). Regarding relations with the school community, most of the students (79.0%) stated that they had positive relationship with their teachers, 68.4% demonstrated they maintained good collaborative relations with their classmates and most (52.4%) said they had no contact with directors, supervisors and other teachers from the school. As to the use of Assistive Technology, computer resources were the major resources mentioned and 76.7% of the participants in the study declared they used specific resources for low vision. It was verified that most of the students had positive relationships with teachers and classmates. The aim of this study was to: understand how people with acquired low vision (subnormal vision) used written language in daily living and to recommend speech and language pathology therapy during the process. A descriptive/exploratory study was conducted in order to build a data collection instrument. The sample was composed of subjects with low vision who attended Cepre/FCM/Unicamp in 2008. A questionnaire was applied during an interview, during which time the following variables were investigated: personal characteristics, use of assistive technology in reading and writing, reasons for performing reading and writing activities and the frequency of reading and writing after having acquired the visual loss. The sample was made up of 8 subjects with acquired low vision. The mean age was 47 years, of which 75,0% were males. Most of the subjects (62,5%) declared they used optical aids to read. All reported they used non-optical aids to read. The results showed that the subjects reported that they used to read to get information on topics of interest and they write to communicate with other people. The majority (75,0%) reported they didn't read and write with the same frequency as before the emergence of the ophthalmic problem and the reason given was difficulty in seeing and eyestrain. Low Vision Student In The Regular School: A Challenge To The Teacher? [o Aluno Portador De Visão Subnormal Na Escola Regular: Desafio Para O Professor?]

Purpose:1) To check self-knowledge and needs for orientation among regular class teachers working with low vision students; 2) To gather information to assist the training on visual deficiency of regular class teachers. Methods: A survey was conducted for the academic year of 1999 among those teachers working in public schools, Campinas/SP/ Brazil, of which 11 were municipal and 9 state schools, respectively 79.0% and 90.0% of these schools. A self-administered questionnaire was used as data collection instrument. Results: The sample was composed of 50 teachers with a regular class experience averaging 20 years. Most of them, 94.0%, said that they had no specific preparation in the area of low vision. Only 18 teachers declared to have received some kind of information/ orientation in order to work with their low vision students and of those only 15 teachers mentioned the kind of orientation received. The whole group of 50 declared interest in receiving information. From the information/orientation requested 66.0% mentioned extended working class materials, 50.0% visual performance and eye disease of their students and 46.0% visual acuity/visual field. Conclusion: It was detected that teachers of regular classes received none or little information about their low vision students but demonstrated interest in its obtention. Low Vision And Rehabilitation: Knowledge Of Ophthalmology Residentes [baixa Visão E Reabilitação: Conhecimentos De Residentes De Oftalmologia]

Design of the study: Observational/exploratory. Objective: To check the knowledge of ophthalmology residents on low vision and rehabilitation practices in a university hospital. Methods: An exploratory study was conducted, applying a questionnaire on visual impairment (low vision and blindness), and on rehabilitation services for visually impaired patients to a non-probabilistic sample formed by ophthalmology residents. Results: The sample was formed by 20 residents who were studying at the 1 st year (45,0%), 2 nd year (30,0%) and 3 rd year (25,0%), having all of them already participated in a theoretical course on low vision. A greater number of them revealed knowledge on ocular affections that can cause visual impairment such as: cataract, retinopathies and neuropathies (100,0%), glaucoma, toxoplasmosis and pigmentary retinosis (95,0%). As to rehabilitation practices, 100,0% declared having received information in their medical internship. Most of the sample refered, yet having knowledge about rehabilitation activities, bling daily living skills (100,0%), locomotion (90,0%) the most mentioned. Diabetic Retinopathy And Visual Disabilities Among Patients In A Rehabilitation Program

Objective: To assess the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy and to evaluate the management of patients with visual disabilities attending at the CEPRE Rehabilitation Program of University of Campinas. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out based on medical records of patients with visual disabilities attending a vision rehabilitation program. The following variables were studied: gender, age, marital status, level of schooling, social security status, origin, type and cause of visual disability and vision rehabilitation actions. Results: The sample consisted of 155 patients, 55.5% males, aged between 12 and 88 years, mean age 41 years old, 34.8% were blind and 65.2% with low vision disability. Of those blind patients, 81.8% reported acquired blindness, and the leading cause was diabetic retinopathy (33.3%), followed by glaucoma (16.6%), and retinal detachment (15.0%). Of those patients with low vision disability, 14.9% had diabetic retinopathy, 14.9% hereditary syndromes, and 10.9% age-related macular degeneration. Vision rehabilitation therapy included interdisciplinary team consultations helping patients go through the mourning process for the loss or impairment of vision, and promoting the enhancement of their skills for performing activities of daily living independently. The management of patients with low vision was also focused on vision rehabilitation. Conclusion: The health of the eyes of patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes is at risk. Utilization Of Optical Devices And Equipments By Students With Visual Impairment [utilização De Recursos ópticos E Equipamentos Por Escolares Com Deficiência Visual]

Purpose: To verify perceptions and conduct of students with visual impairment regarding devices and equipment utilized in schooling process. Methods: A transversal descriptive study on a population of 12-year-old or older students in schooling process, affected by congenital or acquired visual impairment, inserted in the government teaching system of Campinas during the year 2000. An interview quiz, created based on an exploratory study was applied. Results: A group of 26 students, 46% of them with low vision and 53.8% affected by blindness was obtained. Most of the students were from fundamental teaching courses (65.4%), studying in schools with classrooms provided with devices (73.1 %). Among the resources used in reading and writing activities, 94.1% of the students reported they used the Braille system and 81.8% reported that the reading subject was dictated by a colleague. Most of the students with low vision wore glasses (91.7%), and 33.3% utilized a magnifying glass as optical devices. Among the non-optical devices, the most common were the environmental ones, getting closer to the blackboard (75.0%) and to the window (66.7%) for better lighting. Conclusions: It became evident that students with low vision eye-sight made use of devices meant for bearers of blindness, such as applying the Braille system.
