The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences

Digital tools for artworks can offer new opportunities and design new approaches for conservation and public outreach. This paper presents the experience carried out by the School of Conservation and Restoration of the University of Urbino to preserve a public collection of wooden artistic models assembled by Umberto Mastroianni and used as a project of original bronze and steel sculptures. The digital documentation supported the maintenance protocol and helped design the restoration work. Moreover, thanks to cutting-edge technologies, a virtual exhibition was created, testing an AR application that allows the public to better appreciate the results of the interventions. Digital storytelling about artistic meaning connected the models to original sculptures placed in various Italian landscapes, offering the public an artistic journey into Urbino's architecture

Comunicare i processi conservativi in epoca contemporanea.

The research focuses on the issue of conservative documentation for cultural heritage, analysing the debate about traditional practice and application of digital technologies. The aim is to identify new approaches to open up the process, in order to share the data about interventions. The study has been organised in three main stages: a scientific review about technologies currently used for analysing and communicating the heritage; an innovative and systematic method for the documentation of conservation process applied in the laboratories and restoration workspaces; short guidelines showing new perspectives for the restorer. The current digitisation process of cultural heritage inspires some considerations about the method of data collection. The research has investigated the survey techniques and the applied language, in order to design a standard process and to find out general goals. The case study of an open site – the restoration of a Polyptych located in Fano (PU)– allowed the setting up of an experimental workshop about conservative documentation, which led to innovative results about communication. The obtained results outlined possible operating standards and led to the definition of short guidelines for the digital age restorer

CONSERVATION 4.0. POSSIBLE GUIDLINES FOR STANDARDISING THE DOCUMENTAL PROCESS FOR ARTISTIC HERITAGE.

    No full text
The contribution addresses the definition of a new standardised method for the documentation of the restoration process. In the frame of a conservation laboratory open to the public, the research drew up the guidelines for a documental and representative methods discussing the definition of a contemporary conservation praxis facing with digital technologies. The research stems from a restoration of a Polyptych, Madonna con Bambino, Santi e Apostoli by Vittore Crivelli, damaged by earthquake of 2016 and temporarily showcased at Pinacoteca of San Domenico in Fano (PU). The public could visit the workplace set up and use the experimental informative system created from conservative data and results of intervention. To do this, the general process of documentation has progressed in strong synergy with restoration work. Thanks to the collaboration between experts, the project has established a set of priorities in order to capitalise the global results and better communicate each phase of intervention. The content of the study focuses on identifying guidelines that would form a possible framework for documentation useful for conservation of artistic heritage. The standard workflow presented in the paper may potentially influence the theory of conservation as well as the practice. Developing a new approach to heritage, the study aims at bringing digital strategies into the field of conservation in order to propose the new idea of Conservation 4.0

The evolution of the learning society, which considers experiential design as a new economic approach to the development of cultural heritage, involves an adaptation of the professional figures working on its conservation. The goal of the work is to propose a method for the heritage, which involves citizens in an immersive conservation process. The digital revolution in which we are immersed is fuelling a change that requires the sharing of data, accessibility to the information collected and the possibility of using it. Digital as a new medium has changed the way we think and plan for the future. The contribution aims to define a new role for contemporary restoration, supported by the use of digital technologies as an innovative and experimental communication tool. Through the analysis of some case studies, we investigate the importance of data digitization in order to build a shared network to reach as many people as possible. Today the restoration process is not just an indirect act; we’re trying to redesign it as a shared path narrated step by step. This new idea is only possible if the we’ll plan an increasing documentation for cultural heritage. In this new perspective, the documentation must be structured as part of an immersive project that involves the citizen. The professional role of the conservator takes on an increasingly transdisciplinary aspect, which is also possible thanks to the use of new technologies. They can provide great support, being by their nature integrable and expandable. The paper also leads to point out the inclusive aspect of digital contents, in order to obtain communication on several levels. The result is editable and implementable by professionals in real time, but by visitors or tourists too. The suggested approach concretely modifies the basis of documentation design that becomes more and more active. The idea of “open heritage “is a real change of paradigm that tests the new digital tools with the disciplinary areas always recognized. A pioneering approach allows to find the way to develop a new concept of intervention, a new structure for heritage documentation and find the right method for sustainable conservation. Thanks to digital medium, designed for communication, the restoration process fulfils its original purpose of re-accessibility of art and democratization of the messages it contains
