Prediction with Expert Advice under Discounted Loss
We study prediction with expert advice in the setting where the losses are
accumulated with some discounting---the impact of old losses may gradually
vanish. We generalize the Aggregating Algorithm and the Aggregating Algorithm
for Regression to this case, propose a suitable new variant of exponential

Nonresonant Contributions in B->rho pi Decay
We consider nonresonant contributions in the Dalitz plot analysis of B->rho
pi->pi^+ pi^- pi^0 decay and their potential impact on the extraction of the
CKM parameter alpha. In particular, we examine the role of the heavy mesons B^*
and B_0, via the process B->pi (B^*, B_0)->pi^+ pi^- pi^0, and their
interference with resonant contributions in the rho-mass region. We discuss the
inherent uncertainties and suggest that the effects may be substantially

Electron Spin Resonance Above Tc In Layered Manganites
We have performed electron spin resonance (ESR) and dc magnetization measurements on single crystals of La2(1-x)Sr1+2xMn2O7 up to 800 K with special emphasis on the x = 0.4 composition. The ESR linewidth shows behavior similar to that observed in the three-dimensional perovskites and above ∼500 K can be described by a universal expression ΔHpp(T)=[C/Tχ(T)]ΔHpp (∞). The linewidth and the resonance field become anisotropic below ∼500 K. The anisotropy in the resonance field is proportional to the magnetization M, and we concluded that it is intrinsic to the system. We show that demagnetization effects can explain only part of the anisotropy. The remainder arises from short-range uniaxial terms in the Hamiltonian that are associated with the crystal field and Dzialozhinsky-Moriya interactions. Rescattering and chiral dynamics in B\to \rho\pi decay
We examine the role of B^0(\bar B^0) \to \sigma \pi^0 \to \pi^+\pi^- \pi^0
decay in the Dalitz plot analysis of B^0 (\bar B^0) \to \rho\pi \to
\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 decays, employed to extract the CKM parameter \alpha. The
\sigma \pi channel is significant because it can break the relationship between
the penguin contributions in B\to\rho^0\pi^0, B\to\rho^+\pi^-, and
B\to\rho^-\pi^+ decays consequent to an assumption of isospin symmetry. Its
presence thus mimics the effect of isospin violation. The \sigma\pi^0 state is
of definite CP, however; we demonstrate that the B\to\rho\pi analysis can be
generalized to include this channel without difficulty. The \sigma or
f_0(400-1200) ``meson'' is a broad I=J=0 enhancement driven by strong \pi\pi
rescattering; a suitable scalar form factor is constrained by the chiral
dynamics of low-energy hadron-hadron interactions - it is rather different from
the relativistic Breit-Wigner form adopted in earlier B\to\sigma\pi and
D\to\sigma\pi analyses. We show that the use of this scalar form factor leads
to an improved theoretical understanding of the measured ratio Br(\bar B^0 \to
\rho^\mp \pi^\pm) / Br(B^-\to \rho^0 \pi^-).Comment: 26 pages, 8 figs, published version. typos fixed, minor change
The landscape of gifted and talented education in England and Wales: How are teachers implementing policy?

A questionnaire survey which invited both closed and open-ended responses was carried out with a national sample of primary schools. The survey indicated an increasing proportion of coordinators, compared with a survey carried out in 1996, were identifying their gifted and talented children as well as having associated school policies. However, the survey also highlighted a number of issues which need addressing if the initiative is to achieve its objective of providing the best possible educational opportunities for children. For example, it was found that a significant number of practitioners were not aware of the existence of the National Quality Standards for gifted and talented education, provided by the UK government in 2007, and the subject-specific criteria provided by the UK’s Curriculum Authority for identification and provision have been largely ignored. The process of identifying children to be placed on the ‘gifted and talented’ register seems haphazard and based on pragmatic reasons. Analysis of teachers’ responses also revealed a range of views and theoretical positioning held by them, which have implications for classroom practice. As the ‘gifted and talented’ initiative in the UK is entering a second decade, and yet more significant changes in policy are introduced, pertinent questions need to be raised and given consideration
Biochemical measurements of beef are a good predictor of untrained consumer sensory scores across muscles
The ability of the biochemical measurements, haem iron, intramuscular fat (IMF%), moisture content, and total, soluble and insoluble collagen contents, to predict untrained consumer sensory scores both across different muscles and within the same muscle from different carcasses were investigated. Sensory scores from 540 untrained French consumers (tenderness, flavour liking, juiciness and overall liking) were obtained for six muscles; outside (m. biceps femoris), topside (m. semimembranosus), striploin (m. longissimus thoracis), rump (m. gluteus medius), oyster blade (m. infraspinatus) and tenderloin (m. psoas major) from each of 18 French and 18 Australian cattle. The four sensory scores were weighted and combined into a single score termed MQ4, which was also analysed. All sensory scores were highly correlated with each other and with MQ4. This in part reflects the fact that MQ4 is derived from the consumer scores for tenderness, juiciness, flavour and overall liking and also reflects an interrelationship between the sensory scores themselves and in turn validates the use of the MQ4 term to reflect the scope of the consumer eating experience. When evaluated across the six different muscles, all biochemical measurements, except soluble collagen, had a significant effect on all of the sensory scores and MQ4. The average magnitude of impact of IMF%, haem iron, moisture content, total and insoluble collagen contents across the four different sensory scores are 34.9, 5.1, 7.2, 36.3 and 41.3, respectively. When evaluated within the same muscle, only IMF% and moisture content had a significant effect on overall liking (5.9 and 6.2, respectively) and flavour liking (6.1 and 6.4, respectively). These results indicate that in a commercial eating quality prediction model including muscle type, only IMF% or moisture content has the capacity to add any precision. However, all tested biochemical measurements, particularly IMF% and insoluble collagen contents, are strong predictors of eating quality when muscle type is not known. This demonstrates their potential usefulness in extrapolating the sensory data derived from these six muscles to other muscles with no sensory data, but with similar biochemical parameters, and therefore reducing the amount of future sensory testing required
The Impact of |Delta I|=5/2 Transitions in K-> pi pi Decays
We consider the impact of isospin violation on the analysis of K-> pi pi
decays. We scrutinize, in particular, the phenomenological role played by the
additional weak amplitude, of |Delta I|=5/2 in character, incurred by the
presence of isospin violation. We show that Watson's theorem is appropriate in
O(m_d-m_u), so that the inferred pi-pi phase shift at sqrt{s}=m_K determines
the strong phase difference between the I=0 and I=2 amplitudes in K-> pi pi
decay. We find the magnitude of the |Delta I|=5/2 amplitude thus implied by the
empirical branching ratios to be larger than expected from estimates of
isospin-violating strong and electromagnetic effects. We effect a new
determination of the octet and 27-plet coupling constants with
strong-interaction isospin violation and with electromagnetic effects, as
computed by Cirigliano, Donoghue, and Golowich, and find that we are unable to
resolve the difficulty. Exploring the role of |Delta I|=5/2 transitions in the
CP-violating observable epsilon'/epsilon, we determine that the presence of a
|Delta I|=5/2 amplitude impacts the empirical determination of omega, the ratio
of the real parts of the |Delta I|=3/2 to |Delta I|=1/2 amplitudes, and that it
generates a decrease in the estimation of epsilon'/epsilon.Comment: 29 pages, 1 ps fig, refs. added, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Small-polaron hopping conductivity in bilayer manganite LaSrMnO
We report anisotropic resistivity measurements on a
LaSrMnO single crystal over a temperature range
from 2 to 400 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. For K, the
temperature dependence of the zero-field in-plane resistivity
obeys the adiabatic small polaron hopping mechanism, while the out-of-plane
resistivity can be ascribed by an Arrhenius law with the same
activation energy. Considering the magnetic character of the polarons and the
close correlation between the resistivity and magnetization, we developed a
model which allows the determination of . The excellent
agreement of the calculations with the measurements indicates that small
polarons play an essential role in the electrical transport properties in the
