Geometries for universal quantum computation with matchgates
Matchgates are a group of two-qubit gates associated with free fermions. They
are classically simulatable if restricted to act between nearest neighbors on a
one-dimensional chain, but become universal for quantum computation with
longer-range interactions. We describe various alternative geometries with
nearest-neighbor interactions that result in universal quantum computation with
matchgates only, including subtle departures from the chain. Our results pave
the way for new quantum computer architectures that rely solely on the simple

Fractional order and non-linear system identification algorithms for biomedical applications
We discuss the modelling of dielectric responses of amorphous biological samples. Such samples are commonly encountered in impedance spectroscopy studies as well as in UV, IR, optical and THz transient spectroscopy experiments and in pump-probe studies. In many occasions, the samples may display quenched absorption bands. A systems identification framework may be developed to provide parsimonious representations of such responses. To achieve this, it is appropriate to augment the standard models found in the identification literature to incorporate fractional order dynamics. Extensions of models using the forward shift operator, state space models as well as their non-linear Hammerstein-Wiener counterpart models are highlighted. We also discuss the need to extend the theory of electromagnetically excited networks which can account for fractional order behaviour in the non-linear regime by incorporating nonlinear elements to account for the observed non-linearities. The proposed approach leads to the development of a range of new chemometrics tools for biomedical data analysis and classification
Is Small Perfect? Size Limit to Defect Formation in Pyramidal Pt Nanocontacts
We report high resolution transmission electron microscopy and ab initio
calculation results for the defect formation in Pt nanocontacts (NCs). Our
results show that there is a size limit to the existence of twins (extended
structural defects). Defects are always present but blocked away from the tip
axes. The twins may act as scattering plane, influencing contact electron
transmission for Pt NC at room temperature and Ag/Au NC at low temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Estructura de las principales especies arbóreas en el Parque Cruce Caballero y su similitud floristica com areas de Argentina y de Brasil.
El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo estudiar la estructura fitosociológica y la similitud florística entre áreas con selvas estacionales y mixtas de Misiones, Argentina y de Brasil. El Parque Cruce Caballero tiene 522 hectáreas donde se utilizó el método de las parcelas múltiples de 20 x 10 m para árboles a partir de 5 cm de diámetro a la altura de 1,30 (DAP). Se registraron e identificaron todas las especies arbóreas midiéndose el DAP y altura en tres compartimientos ambientales considerados: Latossolo vermelho, Neossolo litólico y Gleissolo Melánico. La Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze domina el estrato superior en el primer compartimiento acompañada de Sorocea bonplandii (Baill.) W.C.Burger, Lanj. & Boer, Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart., Ocotea lancifolia Mez y Apuleia leiocarpa J.F.Macbr.. La araucaria está ausente en el Neossolo Litólico donde predominan Gymnanthes concolor Müll.Arg., Trichilia claussenii C.DC., Apuleia leiocarpa, Pilocarpus pennatifolius Lem. y Sorocea bomplandii. La araucaria está escasamente representada en Gleissolo Melánico donde predominan Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan, Alchornea triplinervia Müll.Arg., Luehea divaricata Mart., Erythrina falcata Benth. y Myrsine gardneriana A.DC.. Comparando la similitud florística con otras áreas de la región se encontró que Cruce Caballero se asemeja a áreas con Selvas estacionales y presenta escasa similitud con a las selvas mixtas con araucaria de Brasil
