Comparison between REBT and Visual/Kinaesthetic Dissociation in the Treatment of Panic Disorder: An Empirical Study
The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of two brief treatment methods for panic disorder: Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and Visual/Kinaesthetic Dissociation (VKD), neither of which have been the object of scientific enquiry. The study is a two-way between-groups pre-test/post-test experimental design with baseline and follow-up measures. An innovative four-session treatment protocol was developed for each treatment method. Eighteen participants in North-East Surrey, England, who responded to media advertisements for cognitive-behavioural treatment for panic disorder and who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia were randomly assigned to either REBT or VKD. Pre-test/post-test changes in panic were measured using the ACQ, PASQ, and HADS scales and a global panic rating measure. At post-test there was a statistically significant improvement on all measures for both groups, which was maintained at one-month follow-up. Taking into consideration limitations such as the small sample size and a short follow-up period, implications of this study and recommendations for future research are discussed
Screening for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder among Somali ex-combatants: A validation study
In Somalia, a large number of active and former combatants are affected by psychological problems such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), that impairs their ability to re-integrate into civilian life. This study reports on development and validation of a screening tool for PTSD in Somali language with a sample of ex-combatants.Waxaa Soomaaliya ka jira tiro badan oo askartii hore ah oo dhimirka wax ka gaaray, sida cudurka la yiraahdo "Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)", kaaso isbeddel ku sameeyo qofka dad ladhaqankiisa. Darasaadkanina wuxuu horumarinayaa qalabka baaritaanka caafimaadka cudurka DPTS oo loo adeegsanayo Af-soomaaliga.
Metabolic profile and psychological variables after bariatric surgery: association with weight outcomes
Purpose This study aims to examine associations between metabolic profile and psychological variables in post-bariatric patients and to investigate if metabolic and psychological variables, namely high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA 1c), impulsivity, psychological distress, depressive and eating disorder symptoms are independently associated with percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) after bariatric surgery. Methods One hundred and fifty bariatric patients (BMI = 33.04 +/- 5.8 kg/m(2)) who underwent to bariatric surgery for more than 28.63 +/- 4.9 months were assessed through a clinical interview, a set of self-report measures and venous blood samples. Pearson's correlations were used to assess correlations between %EWL, metabolic and psychological variables. Multiple linear regression was conducted to investigate which metabolic and psychological variables were independently associated with %EWL, while controlling for type of surgery. Results Higher TG blood levels were associated with higher disordered eating, psychological distress and depression scores. HDL-C was associated with higher depression scores. Both metabolic and psychological variables were associated with %EWL. Regression analyses showed that, controlling for type of surgery, higher % EWL is significantly and independently associated with less disordered eating symptoms and lower TG and HbA_1c blood concentrations (R-2 aj = 0.383, F (4, 82) = 14.34, p < 0.000).Conclusion An association between metabolic and psychological variables, particularly concerning TG blood levels, disordered eating and psychological distress/depression was found. Only higher levels of disordered eating, TG and HbA_1c showed and independent correlation with less weight loss. Targeting maladaptive eating behaviors may be a reasonable strategy to avoid weight regain and optimize health status post-operatively.This research was partially supported by Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia/Foundation for Science and Technology through European Union COMPETE program Grant to Eva Conceicao (IF/01219/2014) and (PTDC/MHC-PCL/4974/2012), doctoral scholarship (SFRH/BD/104159/2014) to Ana Pinto-Bastos and doctoral scholarship (SFRH/BD/104182/2014) to Sofia Ramalho
Implementation of HIV Prevention Interventions in Resource Limited Settings: The Partner Project
INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based HIV prevention interventions have been translated to a variety of contexts across sub-Saharan Africa. Non-specialized community health center (CHC) staff members have been successfully engaged to deliver the interventions, which can be integrated into pre-existing HIV service programs in community-based health care delivery sites. This manuscript describes the process of implementing the Partner Project, a couples HIV risk reduction intervention, and examines the ability of CHC staff to achieve risk reduction outcomes comparable to those of the highly-trained research staff. METHODS: The Partner Project was implemented within the HIV Counseling and Testing program in 6 urban community health clinics in Lusaka, Zambia. One hundred ninety seven HIV-seroconcordant and –discordant couples were sequentially enrolled to the control group or to receive the intervention from Partner research or CHC staff members. Couple members completed assessments on condom use, alcohol use, and intimate partner violence (IPV) at baseline, 6, and 12 months follow-up. RESULTS: Sexual barrier use outcomes achieved by the CHC staff were comparable to or better than those achieved by the Partner Project research staff, and both were superior to the control group. A reduction in IPV was observed for the entire sample, although no change in alcohol use was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of HIV prevention interventions at the community level should take advantage of existing resources available within the CHC staff. This is especially relevant in resource limited settings as consideration of the financial and clinical requirements of intervention programs is essential to the achievement of successful program implementation
