T-duality and Generalized Complex Geometry
We find the explicit T-duality transformation in the phase space formulation
of the N=(1,1) sigma model. We also show that the T-duality transformation is a
symplectomorphism and it is an element of O(d,d). Further, we find the explicit
T-duality transformation of a generalized complex structure in this model. We
also show that the extended supersymmetry of the sigma model is preserved under

Etched Glass Surfaces, Atomic Force Microscopy and Stochastic Analysis
The effect of etching time scale of glass surface on its statistical
properties has been studied using atomic force microscopy technique. We have
characterized the complexity of the height fluctuation of a etched surface by
the stochastic parameters such as intermittency exponents, roughness, roughness
exponents, drift and diffusion coefficients and find their variations in terms

Mitochondrial quality control and neurological disease: an emerging connection
The human brain is a highly complex organ with remarkable energy demands. Although it
represents only 2% of the total body weight, it accounts for 20% of all oxygen
consumption, reflecting its high rate of metabolic activity. Mitochondria have a crucial
role in the supply of energy to the brain. Consequently, their deterioration can have
important detrimental consequences on the function and plasticity of neurons, and is
thought to have a pivotal role in ageing and in the pathogenesis of several neurological
disorders. Owing to their inherent physiological functions, mitochondria are subjected to
particularly high levels of stress and have evolved specific molecular quality-control
mechanisms to maintain the mitochondrial components. Here, we review some of the most
recent advances in the understanding of mitochondrial stress-control pathways, with a
particular focus on how defects in such pathways might contribute to neurodegenerative
disease
Towards Minkowski Vacua in Type II String Compactifications
We study the vacuum structure of compactifications of type II string theories
on orientifolds with SU(3)xSU(3) structure. We argue that generalised geometry
enables us to treat these non-geometric compactifications using a supergravity
analysis in a way very similar to geometric compactifications. We find
supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with all the moduli stabilised at weak string
coupling and all the tadpole conditions satisfied. Generically the value of the
moduli fields in the vacuum is parametrically controlled and can be taken to

Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their
