    Data mining reactor fuel grab load trace data to support nuclear core condition monitoring

    A critical component of an advanced-gas cooled reactor (AGR) station is the graphite core. As a station ages, the graphite bricks that comprise the core can distort and may eventually crack. As the core cannot be replaced the core integrity ultimately determines the station life. Monitoring these distortions is usually restricted to the routine outages, which occur every few years, as this is the only time that the reactor core can be accessed by external sensing equipment. However, during weekly refueling activities measurements are taken from the core for protection and control purposes. It is shown in this paper that these measurements may be interpreted for condition monitoring purposes, thus potentially providing information relating to core condition on a more frequent basis. This paper describes the data-mining approach adopted to analyze this data and also describes a software system designed and implemented to support this process. The use of this software to develop a model of expected behavior based on historical data, which may highlight events containing unusual features possibly indicative of brick cracking, is also described. Finally, the implementation of this newly acquired understanding in an automated analysis system is described

    Exercise intervention in people with cancer undergoing adjuvant cancer treatment following surgery: a systematic review

    BackgroundRemaining physically active during and after cancer treatment is known to improve associated adverse effects, improve overall survival and reduce the probability of relapse. This systematic review addresses the question: is an exercise training programme beneficial in people with cancer undergoing adjuvant cancer treatment following surgery.MethodsA systematic database search of Embase, Ovid, Medline without Revisions, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrials.gov for any randomised controlled trials (RCT) or non-RCT addressing the effect of an exercise training programme in those having adjuvant cancer treatment following surgery was conducted.ResultsThe database search yielded 6489 candidate abstracts of which 94 references included the required terms. A total of 17 articles were included in this review. Exercise training is safe and feasible in the adjuvant setting and furthermore may improve measures of physical fitness and health related quality of life (HRQoL).ConclusionThis is the first systematic review on exercise training interventions in people with cancer undergoing adjuvant cancer treatment following surgery. Due to the lack of adequately powered RCTs in this area, it remains unclear whether exercise training in this context improves clinical outcomes other physical fitness and HRQoL. It remains unclear what is the optimal timing of initiation of an exercise programme and what are the best combinations of elements within an exercise training programme to optimise training efficacy. Furthermore, it is unclear if initiating such exercise programmes at cancer diagnosis may have a long-lasting effect on physically activity throughout the subsequent life course

    Fractional Fokker-Planck Equation and Oscillatory Behavior of Cumulant Moments

    The Fokker-Planck equation is considered, which is connected to the birth and death process with immigration by the Poisson transform. The fractional derivative in time variable is introduced into the Fokker-Planck equation. From its solution (the probability density function), the generating function (GF) for the corresponding probability distribution is derived. We consider the case when the GF reduces to that of the negative binomial distribution (NBD), if the fractional derivative is replaced to the ordinary one. Formulas of the factorial moment and the HjH_j moment are derived from the GF. The HjH_j moment derived from the GF of the NBD decreases monotonously as the rank j increases. However, the HjH_j moment derived in our approach oscillates, which is contrasted with the case of the NBD. Calculated HjH_j moments are compared with those given from the data in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions and in e+e−e^+e^- collisions.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Dynamic Bayesian Combination of Multiple Imperfect Classifiers

    Classifier combination methods need to make best use of the outputs of multiple, imperfect classifiers to enable higher accuracy classifications. In many situations, such as when human decisions need to be combined, the base decisions can vary enormously in reliability. A Bayesian approach to such uncertain combination allows us to infer the differences in performance between individuals and to incorporate any available prior knowledge about their abilities when training data is sparse. In this paper we explore Bayesian classifier combination, using the computationally efficient framework of variational Bayesian inference. We apply the approach to real data from a large citizen science project, Galaxy Zoo Supernovae, and show that our method far outperforms other established approaches to imperfect decision combination. We go on to analyse the putative community structure of the decision makers, based on their inferred decision making strategies, and show that natural groupings are formed. Finally we present a dynamic Bayesian classifier combination approach and investigate the changes in base classifier performance over time.Comment: 35 pages, 12 figure

    Patterns of regional lung physiology in cystic fibrosis using ventilation magnetic resonance imaging and multiple-breath washout

    Hyperpolarised helium-3 (3He) ventilation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and multiple-breath washout (MBW) are sensitive methods for detecting lung disease in cystic fibrosis (CF). We aimed to explore their relationship across a broad range of CF disease severity and patient age, as well as assess the effect of inhaled lung volume on ventilation distribution.32 children and adults with CF underwent MBW and 3He-MRI at a lung volume of end-inspiratory tidal volume (EIVT). In addition, 28 patients performed 3He-MRI at total lung capacity. 3He-MRI scans were quantitatively analysed for ventilation defect percentage (VDP), ventilation heterogeneity index (VHI) and the number and size of individual contiguous ventilation defects. From MBW, the lung clearance index, convection-dependent ventilation heterogeneity (Scond) and convection-diffusion-dependent ventilation heterogeneity (Sacin) were calculated.VDP and VHI at EIVT strongly correlated with lung clearance index (r=0.89 and r=0.88, respectively), Sacin (r=0.84 and r=0.82, respectively) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) (r=-0.79 and r=-0.78, respectively). Two distinct 3He-MRI patterns were highlighted: patients with abnormal FEV1 had significantly (p<0.001) larger, but fewer, contiguous defects than those with normal FEV1, who tended to have numerous small volume defects. These two MRI patterns were delineated by a VDP of ∌10%. At total lung capacity, when compared to EIVT, VDP and VHI reduced in all subjects (p<0.001), demonstrating improved ventilation distribution and regions of volume-reversible and nonreversible ventilation abnormalities

    Ionization in experiments where solid targets are irradiated by high irradiance extreme ultra-violet (EUV) lasers is examined. Free electron degeneracy effects on ionization in the presence of a high EUV flux of radiation is shown to be important. Overlap of the physics of such plasmas with plasma material under compression in indirect inertial fusion is explored. The design of the focusing optics needed to achieve high irradiance (up to 1014 Wcm−2) using an EUV capillary laser is presented

    Search for the Proton Decay Mode proton to neutrino K+ in Soudan 2

    We have searched for the proton decay mode proton to neutrino K+ using the one-kiloton Soudan 2 high resolution calorimeter. Contained events obtained from a 3.56 kiloton-year fiducial exposure through June 1997 are examined for occurrence of a visible K+ track which decays at rest into mu+ nu or pi+ pi0. We found one candidate event consistent with background, yielding a limit, tau/B > 4.3 10^{31} years at 90% CL with no background subtraction.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 3 tables and 3 figures, Accepted by Physics Letters
