    AbstractWe show that if a linear differential equation of spectral type with polynomial coefficients LN[y](x) = ∑i=0Nli(x) = λny(x) has an orthogonal polynomial system of solutions, then the differential operator LN[·] must be symmetrizable. We also give a few applications of this result

    Stability analysis of f(R)-AdS black holes

    We study the stability of f(R)-AdS (Schwarzschild-AdS) black hole obtained from f(R) gravity. In order to resolve the difficulty of solving fourth order linearized equations, we transform f(R) gravity into the scalar-tensor theory by introducing two auxiliary scalars. In this case, the linearized curvature scalar becomes a dynamical scalaron, showing that all linearized equations are second order. Using the positivity of gravitational potentials and S-deformed technique allows us to guarantee the stability of f(R)-AdS black hole if the scalaron mass squared satisfies the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. This is confirmed by computing quasinormal frequencies of the scalaron for large f(R)-AdS black hole.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, version to appear in EPJ

    Analysis of pesticide residues in strawberries and soils by GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS and two-dimensional GC-timeof- flight MS comparing organic and integrated pest management farming

    This study analysed 22 strawberry and soil samples after their collection over the course of 2 years to compare the residue profiles from organic farming with integrated pest management practices in Portugal. For sample preparation, we used the citrate-buffered version of the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method. We applied three different methods for analysis: (1) 27 pesticides were targeted using LC-MS/MS; (2) 143 were targeted using low pressure GC-tandem mass spectrometry (LP-GC-MS/MS); and (3) more than 600 pesticides were screened in a targeted and untargeted approach using comprehensive, two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS). Comparison was made of the analyses using the different methods for the shared samples. The results were similar, thereby providing satisfactory confirmation of both similarly positive and negative findings. No pesticides were found in the organic-farmed samples. In samples from integrated pest management practices, nine pesticides were determined and confirmed to be present, ranging from 2 μg kg−1 for fluazifop-pbutyl to 50 μg kg−1 for fenpropathrin.     Study of B meson decays to three-body charmless hadronic final states

    We report results of a study of charmless B meson decays to three-body KPiPi, KKPi and KKK final states. Measurements of branching fractions for B decays to K+0Pi+Pi-, K+K+K-, K0K+K-, KsKsK+ and KsKsKs final states are presented. The decays B0=>K0K+K-, B+=>KsKsK+ and B0=>KsKsKs are observed for the first time. We also report evidence for B+=>K+K-Pi+ decay. For the three-body final states K0K+K-, KsKsPi+, K+K+Pi- and K-Pi+Pi+ 90% confidence level upper limits are reported. Finally, we discuss the possibility of using the three-body B0=>KsK+K- decay for CP violation studies. The results are obtained with a 78 fb^-1 data sample collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+e- collider.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures.     omega-nucleus bound states in the Walecka model

    Using the Walecka model, we investigate theoretically whether an omega meson is bound to finite nuclei. We study several nuclei from ^{6}He to ^{208}Pb, and compare the results with those in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Our calculation shows that deeper omega-nucleus bound states are predicted in the Walecka model than in QMC. One can expect to detect such bound states in the proposed experiment involving the (d,^3He) reaction at GSI.Comment: 11 pages, including 2 ps files and 2 table

    Search for Charmless Two-body Baryonic Decays of B Mesons

    We report the results of a search for the rare baryonic decays B0ppˉB^0 \to p\bar{p}, ΛΛˉ\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}, and B+pΛˉB^+ \to p\bar{\Lambda}. The analysis is based on a data set of 31.7×106BBˉ31.7\times 10^6 B\bar{B} events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ee^+e^- collider. No statistically significant signals are found, and we set branching fraction upper limits B(B0ppˉ)<1.2×106{\mathcal B}(B^0 \to p\bar{p}) < 1.2 \times 10^{-6}, B(B0ΛΛˉ)<1.0×106{\mathcal B}(B^0 \to \Lambda\bar{\Lambda}) < 1.0 \times 10^{-6}, and B(B+pΛˉ)<2.2×106{\mathcal B}(B^+ \to p\bar{\Lambda}) < 2.2 \times 10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table.     Update of the Search for the Neutrinoless Decay τμγ\tau\to \mu\gamma

    We present an update of the search for the lepton family number violating decay τμγ\tau \to \mu\gamma using a complete CLEO II data sample of 12.6 million τ+τ\tau^+\tau^- pairs. No evidence of a signal has been found and the corresponding upper limit is \BR(\tau \to \mu\gamma) < 1.0 \times 10^{-6} at 90% CL, significantly smaller than previous limits.     Evidence for CP-Violating Asymmetries in B0->pi+pi- Decays and Constraints on the CKM Angle phi2

    We present an improved measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B0 -> pi+ pi- decays based on a 78 fb^-1 data sample collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We reconstruct one neutral B meson as a B0 -> pi+ pi- CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from inclusive properties of its decay products. We apply an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points. The fit yields the CP-violating asymmetry amplitudes Apipi = +0.77+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.08(syst) and Spipi = -1.23+/-0.41(stat)+0.08/-0.07(syst), where the statistical uncertainties are determined from Monte Carlo pseudo-experiments. We obtain confidence intervals for CP-violating asymmetry parameters Apipi and Spipi based on a frequentist approach. We rule out the CP-conserving case, Apipi=Spipi=0, at the 99.93% confidence level. We discuss how these results constrain the value of the CKM angle phi2.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Measurement of the Mass Splittings between the bbˉχb,J(1P)b\bar{b}\chi_{b,J}(1P) States

    We present new measurements of photon energies and branching fractions for the radiative transitions: Upsilon(2S)->gamma+chi_b(J=0,1,2). The masses of the chi_b states are determined from the measured radiative photon energies. The ratio of mass splittings between the chi_b substates, r==(M[J=2]-M[J=1])/(M[J=1]-M[J=0]) with M the chi_b mass, provides information on the nature of the bbbar confining potential. We find r(1P)=0.54+/-0.02+/-0.02. This value is in conflict with the previous world average, but more consistent with the theoretical expectation that r(1P)<r(2P); i.e., that this mass splittings ratio is smaller for the chi_b(1P) triplet than for the chi_b(2P) triplet.Comment: 11 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Radiative Decay Modes of the D0D^{0} Meson

    Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR we have searched for four radiative decay modes of the D0D^0 meson: D0ϕγD^0\to\phi\gamma, D0ωγD^0\to\omega\gamma, D0KˉγD^0\to\bar{K}^{*}\gamma, and D0ρ0γD^0\to\rho^0\gamma. We obtain 90% CL upper limits on the branching ratios of these modes of 1.9×1041.9\times 10^{-4}, 2.4×1042.4\times 10^{-4}, 7.6×1047.6\times 10^{-4} and 2.4×1042.4\times 10^{-4} respectively.Comment: 15 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN
