High frequency sound in superfluid 3He-B
We present measurements of the absolute phase velocity of transverse and
longitudinal sound in superfluid 3He-B at low temperature, extending from the
imaginary squashing mode to near pair-breaking. Changes in the transverse phase
velocity near pair-breaking have been explained in terms of an order parameter
collective mode that arises from f-wave pairing interactions, the so-called
J=4- mode. Using these measurements, we establish lower bounds on the energy
gap in the B-phase. Measurement of attenuation of longitudinal sound at low
temperature and energies far above the pair-breaking threshold, are in
agreement with the lower bounds set on pair-breaking. Finally, we discuss our
estimations for the strength of the f-wave pairing interactions and the Fermi

Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory: Fast Response Space Missions for Early Time Phase of Gamma Ray Bursts
One of the unexplored domains in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is the early time
phase of the optical light curve. We have proposed Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) to
address this question through extraordinary opportunities presented by a series of small
space missions. The UFFO is equipped with a fast-response Slewing Mirror Telescope that
uses a rapidly moving mirror or mirror array to redirect the optical beam rather than
slewing the entire spacecraft or telescope to aim the optical instrument at the GRB
position. The UFFO will probe the early optical rise of GRBs with sub-second response, for
the first time, opening a completely new frontier in GRB and transient studies. Its fast
response measurements of the optical emission of dozens of GRB each year will provide
unique probes of the burst mechanism and test the prospect of GRB as a new standard
candle, potentially opening up the z > 10 universe. We describe the current limit in
early photon measurements, the aspects of early photon physics, our soon-to-be-launched
UFFO-pathfinder mission, and our next planned mission, the UFFO-100

Despite the significant advances in path planning methods, problems involving highly constrained spaces are still challenging. In particular, in many situations the configuration space is a non-parametrizable variety implicitly defined by constraints, which complicates the successful generalization of sampling-based path planners. In this paper, we present a new path planning algorithm specially tailored for highly constrained systems. It builds on recently developed tools for Higher-dimensional Continuation, which provide numerical procedures to describe an implicitly defined variety using a set of local charts. We propose to extend these
methods to obtain an efficient path planner on varieties, handling highly constrained
problems. The advantage of this planner comes from that it directly operates into
the configuration space and not into the higher-dimensional ambient space, as most

Generating Uniform Incremental Grids on SO(3) Using the Hopf Fibration
Abstract. The problem of generating uniform deterministic samples over the rotation group, SO(3), is fundamental to many fields, such as computational structural biology, robotics, computer graphics, astrophysics. We present the best-known method to date for constructing incremental, deterministic grids on SO(3); it provides the: 1) lowest metric distortion for grid neighbor edges, 2) optimal dispersionreduction with each additional sample, 3) explicit neighborhood structure, and 4) equivolumentic partition of SO(3) by the grid cells. We also demonstrate the use of the sequence on motion planning problems.
Malignant change in dermatitis artefacta.
Dermatitis artefacta is a chronic skin lesion produced by self-trauma. Avoidance of further trauma, topical steroids and psychological therapy all play a part in the treatment of such lesions. Unresolved lesions may become large and disfiguring and subject to infection. We report a case of one such lesion in an elderly woman who persistently excoriated a cholecystectomy scar over 40 years. Malignant transformation occurred in a manner analogous to the neoplastic change observed in other types of chronic ulcer (Marjolin's ulcer). The squamous cell carcinoma presented with widespread metastases from which the patient eventually died. Recent literature concerning Marjolin's ulcers is reviewed and it is noted that this is the first reported case of death caused by malignant change in dermatitis artefacta
