Entrepreneur of ones own labour force - some conclusions for the sociology of education

Some remarks are made on the „fading of boundaries" within work in order to explain this development (1). Die Entgrenzung von Arbeit und Arbeitskraft : eine subjektorientierte Interpretation des Wandels der Arbeit (The fading of the boundaries between work and worker : a subject-orientated interpretation of the change in work)

"The central theme of the article is that the current 'change in the organisation conditions of work' is resulting in the boundaries of the employment relationship becoming more unclear, which also affects the relationship between 'work' and 'life'. Workers affected by this are increasingly being forced to be responsible for structuring their own work and therefore also for the entire organisation of their everyday life. A possible consequence of this in the long-term is also a fading of the boundaries of the social state of worker leading more in the direction of an individualised 'worker-manager', which will have lasting effects on the qualification level and training of workers. The background to the ideas are findings and theses from a sociological research project on the change in the everyday life-style of people in employment." Un(der)paid Innovators

This paper investigates the phenomena of 'crowdsourcing', or the outsourcing of tasks to the general internet public. This phenomenon was made possible by technological innovations associated with 'Web 2.0' but is evidence of historically significant change in the relations between firms and their customers. We are witnessing the emergence of a new consumer type: the "working consumer". In the conventional role, consumers were passive 'kings' to be waited upon. Consumers now are becoming more like coworkers who take over specific parts of a production process, whereby this process ultimately remains under the control of a commercial enterprise. This article seeks a more precise definition of crowdsourcing, catalogues some of its forms, and differentiates them from peripherally related phenomena. It ends with a discussion regarding potential consequences (negative and positive) of crowdsourcing for the future organization of work

Zur Subjektivierung von Arbeit

In Diskursen um die künftige Entwicklung von Erwerbsarbeit wird verschiedentlich betont, daß individuellen Handlungen und Deutungen der Subjekte im Arbeitsprozeß eine zunehmende Bedeutung zukomme. Diese Entwicklung fassen wir begrifflich als "Subjektivierung von Arbeit" im Sinne eines Wechselverhältnisses zwischen einzelnem Subjekt und Arbeit: Die Individuen tragen mehr "Subjektives" in die Arbeit hinein und/oder die Arbeit fordert immer mehr "Subjektives" von den Individuen. Ziel dieses Papers ist es, mit einer Sichtung verschiedener soziologischer Forschungsbereiche zentrale Merkmale einer solchen "Subjektivierung" herauszuarbeiten, um sie anschließend nach einer weiteren Begriffspräzisierung einer kritischen Bewertung zu unterziehen, die Schlußfolgerungen über die veränderte Qualität des Wechselverhältnisses von arbeitender Person und Arbeitswelt und diesbezügliche gesellschaftliche Auswirkungen ermöglichen soll. -- Some debates about the future of paid labor focus on the fact that the impact of "subjective" actions and interpretations of the individuals in the work process increases. We conceptualize this development as "subjectivation of work". This term implies a historical process of an intensification of the interdependencies between individuals and their work: Individuals carry more "subjective" input (properties, opinions, motivations, and demands) into work, and work increasingly demands input of "subjective" factors (e. g. self-organization, creativity, emotions, motivations) from the individuals. In this paper, relevant fields of sociological research will be reviewed in order to grasp central aspects of the "subjectivation of work" process. The goal is a more precise understanding of the concept and a critical assessment of the process. The paper concludes with an assessment of changed qualities in the interdependency between working individuals and the work process and its impacts for society.

Nitrogen fixation in eukaryotes – New models for symbiosis

BACKGROUND: Nitrogen, a component of many bio-molecules, is essential for growth and development of all organisms. Most nitrogen exists in the atmosphere, and utilisation of this source is important as a means of avoiding nitrogen starvation. However, the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen via the nitrogenase enzyme complex is restricted to some bacteria. Eukaryotic organisms are only able to obtain fixed nitrogen through their symbiotic interactions with nitrogen-fixing prokaryotes. These symbioses involve a variety of host organisms, including animals, plants, fungi and protists. RESULTS: We have compared the morphological, physiological and molecular characteristics of nitrogen fixing symbiotic associations of bacteria and their diverse hosts. Special features of the interaction, e.g. vertical transmission of symbionts, grade of dependency of partners and physiological modifications have been considered in terms of extent of co-evolution and adaptation. Our findings are that, despite many adaptations enabling a beneficial partnership, most symbioses for molecular nitrogen fixation involve facultative interactions. However, some interactions, among them endosymbioses between cyanobacteria and diatoms, show characteristics that reveal a more obligate status of co-evolution. CONCLUSION: Our review emphasises that molecular nitrogen fixation, a driving force for interactions and co-evolution of different species, is a widespread phenomenon involving many different organisms and ecosystems. The diverse grades of symbioses, ranging from loose associations to highly specific intracellular interactions, might themselves reflect the range of potential evolutionary fates for symbiotic partnerships. These include the extreme evolutionary modifications and adaptations that have accompanied the formation of organelles in eukaryotic cells: plastids and mitochondria. However, age and extensive adaptation of plastids and mitochondria complicate the investigation of processes involved in the transition of symbionts to organelles. Extant lineages of symbiotic associations for nitrogen fixation show diverse grades of adaptation and co-evolution, thereby representing different stages of symbiont-host interaction. In particular cyanobacterial associations with protists, like the Rhopalodia gibba-spheroid body symbiosis, could serve as important model systems for the investigation of the complex mechanisms underlying organelle evolution

Der eigene und der fremde Alltag

Der Beitrag möchte ein spezifisches Moment des Theoriekonzepts "Alltägliche Lebensführung" hervorheben: die partielle Verselbständigung alltäglicher Lebensführung gegenüber der sie entwickelnden und praktizierenden Person. Der Autor widmet sich dem Problem der eigenwilligen Eigenlogik der alltäglichen Lebensführung und der dahinterstehenden paradoxen Dialektik zwischen selbstbestimmter Aneignung von Gesellschaft und einem daraus resultierenden Unterworfensein unter eine eigene Konstruktion. Der Autor faßt die Eigenlogik der alltäglichen Lebensführung als ein System von Quasi-Verträgen mit anderen und mit sich selbst, das man aufgrund der anfallenden Transaktionskosten nicht ohne weiteres beliebig ändern oder auflösen kann. Die daraus entstehende Verselbständigung von Lebensführung gegenüber ihrem Produzenten ist zum einen eine zentrale Funktionsbedingung von Lebensführung, zum anderen aber auch, als Selbstentfremdung, notwendige Bedingung einer möglichen aktiven (Wieder-)Aneignung des eigenen Lebens. Denkbar ist auch, dass eine dauerhafte Selbstbeherrschung des auf diese Weise "eigenen" Alltags letztendlich die Person nicht befreit, sondern auf perfide Weise gesellschaftliche Herrschaft perfektioniert.
