Spatially generalizable representations of facial expressions: Decoding across partial face samples
A network of cortical and sub-cortical regions is known to be important in the processing of facial expression. However, to date no study has investigated whether representations of facial expressions present in this network permit generalization across independent samples of face information (e.g. eye region Vs mouth region). We presented participants with partial face samples of five expression categories in a rapid event-related fMRI experiment. We reveal a network of face sensitive regions that contain information about facial expression categories regardless of which part of the face is presented. We further reveal that the neural information present in a subset of these regions: dorsal prefrontal cortex (dPFC), superior temporal sulcus (STS), lateral occipital and ventral temporal cortex, and even early visual cortex, enables reliable generalization across independent visual inputs (faces depicting the 'eyes only' versus 'eyes removed'). Furthermore, classification performance was correlated to behavioral performance in STS and dPFC. Our results demonstrate that both higher (e.g. STS, dPFC) and lower level cortical regions contain information useful for facial expression decoding that go beyond the visual information presented, and implicate a key role for contextual mechanisms such as cortical feedback in facial expression perception under challenging conditions of visual occlusion
Adiabatic orientation of rotating dipole molecules in an external field
The induced polarization of a beam of polar clusters or molecules passing
through an electric or magnetic field region differs from the textbook
Langevin-Debye susceptibility. This distinction, which is important for the
interpretation of deflection and focusing experiments, arises because instead
of acquiring thermal equilibrium in the field region, the beam ensemble
typically enters the field adiabatically, i.e., with a previously fixed
distribution of rotational states. We discuss the orientation of rigid
symmetric-top systems with a body-fixed electric or magnetic dipole moment. The
analytical expression for their "adiabatic-entry" orientation is elucidated and
compared with exact numerical results for a range of parameters. The
differences between the polarization of thermodynamic and "adiabatic-entry"
ensembles, of prolate and oblate tops, and of symmetric-top and linear rotators

Testing the neutrality of matter by acoustic means in a spherical resonator
New measurements to test the neutrality of matter by acoustic means are
reported. The apparatus is based on a spherical capacitor filled with gaseous
SF excited by an oscillating electric field. The apparatus has been
calibrated measuring the electric polarizability. Assuming charge conservation
in the decay of the neutron, the experiment gives a limit of
for the electron-proton charge
difference, the same limit holding for the charge of the neutron. Previous
measurements are critically reviewed and found incorrect: the present result is
the best limit obtained with this technique
Many-body theory of gamma spectra from positron-atom annihilation
A many-body theory approach to the calculation of gamma spectra of positron
annihilation on many-electron atoms is developed. We evaluate the first-order
correlation correction to the annihilation vertex and perform numerical
calculations for the noble gas atoms. Extrapolation with respect to the maximal
orbital momentum of the intermediate electron and positron states is used to
achieve convergence. The inclusion of correlation corrections improves

Justice at Sea: Fishersâ politics and marine conservation in coastal Odisha, India
This is a paper about the politics of fishing rights in and around the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in coastal Odisha, in eastern India. Claims to the resources of this sanctuary are politicised through the creation of a particularly damaging narrative by influential Odiya environmental actors about Bengalis, as illegal immigrants who have hurt the ecosystem through their fishing practices. Anchored within a theoretical framework of justice as recognition, the paper considers the making of a regional Odiya environmentalism that is, potentially, deeply exclusionary. It details how an argument about âillegal Bengalisâ depriving âindigenous Odiyasâ of their legitimate âtraditional fishing rightsâ derives from particular notions of indigeneity and territory. But the paper also shows that such environmentalism is tenuous, and fits uneasily with the everyday social landscape of fishing in coastal Odisha. It concludes that a wider class conflict between small fishers and the state over a sanctuary sets the context in which questions about legitimate resource rights are raised, sometimes with important effects, like when out at sea
Extracorporeal life support devices and strategies for management of acute cardiorespiratory failure in adult patients: A comprehensive review
Evolution of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) technology has added a new dimension to the intensive care management of acute cardiac and/or respiratory failure in adult patients who fail conventional treatment. ECLS also complements cardiac surgical and cardiology procedures, implantation of long-term mechanical cardiac assist devices, heart and lung transplantation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Available ECLS therapies provide a range of options to the multidisciplinary teams who are involved in the time-critical care of these complex patients. While venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can provide complete respiratory support, extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal facilitates protective lung ventilation and provides only partial respiratory support. Mechanical circulatory support with venoarterial (VA) ECMO employed in a traditional central/peripheral fashion or in a temporary ventricular assist device configuration may stabilise patients with decompensated cardiac failure who have evidence of end-organ dysfunction, allowing time for recovery, decision-making, and bridging to implantation of a long-term mechanical circulatory support device and occasionally heart transplantation. In highly selected patients with combined severe cardiac and respiratory failure, advanced ECLS can be provided with central VA ECMO, peripheral VA ECMO with timely transition to venovenous ECMO or VA-venous ECMO upon myocardial recovery to avoid upper body hypoxia or by addition of an oxygenator to the temporary ventricular assist device circuit. This article summarises the available ECLS options and provides insights into the principles and practice of these techniques. One should emphasise that, as is common with many emerging therapies, their optimal use is currently not backed by quality evidence. This deficiency needs to be addressed to ensure that the full potential of ECLS can be achieved
Experimental results of crystal-assisted slow extraction at the SPS
The possibility of extracting highly energetic particles from the Super
Proton Synchrotron (SPS) by means of silicon bent crystals has been explored
since the 1990's. The channelling effect of a bent crystal can be used to
strongly deflect primary protons and eject them from the synchrotron. Many
studies and experiments have been carried out to investigate crystal
channelling effects. The extraction of 120 and 270 GeV proton beams has already
been demonstrated in the SPS with dedicated experiments located in the ring.
Presently in the SPS, the UA9 experiment is performing studies to evaluate the
possibility to use bent silicon crystals to steer particle beams in high energy
accelerators. Recent studies on the feasibility of extraction from the SPS have
been made using the UA9 infrastructure with a longer-term view of using
crystals to help mitigate slow extraction induced activation of the SPS. In
this paper, the possibility to eject particles into the extraction channel in
LSS2 using the bent crystals already installed in the SPS is presented. Details
of the concept, simulations and measurements carried out with beam are

Nonlinear dynamics of giant resonances in atomic nuclei
The dynamics of monopole giant resonances in nuclei is analyzed in the
time-dependent relativistic mean-field model. The phase spaces of isoscalar and
isovector collective oscillations are reconstructed from the time-series of
dynamical variables that characterize the proton and neutron density
distributions. The analysis of the resulting recurrence plots and correlation
dimensions indicate regular motion for the isoscalar mode, and chaotic dynamics
for the isovector oscillations. Information-theoretic functionals identify and
quantify the nonlinear dynamics of giant resonances in quantum systems that

ON THE LOCAL SUM CONJECTURE IN TWO DIMENSIONS
In this paper we give an elementary proof of the local sum conjecture in two
dimensions. In a remarkable paper [CMN, arXiv:1810.11340], this conjecture has
been established in all dimensions using sophisticated, powerful techniques
from a research area blending algebraic geometry with ideas from logic. The
purpose of this paper is to give an elementary proof of this conjecture which
