    Esperienze di monitoraggio integrato: il caso della Rete Sismometrica dell’Italia centro orientale e dei suoi servizi

    Viene presentata l’esperienza maturata dagli operatori della sede di Ancona dell’INGV (INGV-AN) nell’ambito delle collaborazioni tra l’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) e la Regione Marche per il miglioramento delle attività di monitoraggio sismico. L’attività dell’INGV-AN aveva due scopi: migliorare le conoscenze sulla sismicità regionale a fini scientifici e perfezionare il servizio di informazione svolto per il Dipartimento per le Politiche Integrate di Sicurezza e per la Protezione Civile (DPISPC). Per il raggiungimento degli scopi si è proceduto all’incremento del numero di stazioni, alla trasformazione in real- time della vecchia rete dial-up, alla installazione di nuove stazioni accelerometriche, e all’utilizzo del complesso dei dati raccolti dalle stazioni accelerometriche e velocimetriche in funzione nel territorio regionale e in quelli immediatamente limitrofi, nonché allo scambio dati tra la sede INGV di Ancona e quella di Roma. I costi dell’intera operazione sono stati contenuti grazie all’utilizzo delle infrastrutture radio wireless della Regione Marche, della economica trasmissione UMTS, di acquisitori GAIA sviluppati dall’INGV e di economici ma efficaci accelerometri MEMS SF3000L della Colybris. Gli obiettivi raggiunti sono i presupposti per il proseguimento della collaborazione tra i due enti rivolta alla copertura più ampia possibile del territorio regionale con reti di rilevamento accelerometrico a basso costo e alla realizzazione di servizi sempre più finalizzati all’emergenza sismica

    Interlayer-confined Cu(II) complex as an efficient and long-lasting catalyst for oxidation of H2s on montmorillonite

    Removal of highly toxic H2S for pollution control and operational safety is a pressing need. For this purpose, a montmorillonite intercalated with Cu(II)-phenanthroline complex [Cu[(Phen)(H2O)2]2+ (Mt-CuPhen) was prepared to capture gaseous H2S under mild conditions. This hybrid material was simple to obtain and demonstrated an outstanding ability to entrap H2S at room temperature, retaining high efficiency for a very long time (up to 36.8 g of S/100 g Mt-CuPhen after 3 months of exposure). Sorbent and H2S uptake were investigated by elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction measurements, diffuse reflectance (DR) UV\u2013Vis and infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis and evolved gas mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The H2S capture was studied over time and a mechanism of action was proposed. The entrapping involves a catalytic mechanism in which [Cu[(Phen)(H2O)2]2+ acts as catalyst for H2S oxidation to S0 by atmospheric oxygen. The low cost and the long-lasting performance for H2S removal render Mt-CuPhen an extremely appealing trap for H2S removal and a promising material for many technological applications

    Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms and Cardiovascular Events: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Context The correlation among metabolic syndrome, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is well established. In particular, CVD has been proposed as a potential risk factor for both LUTS progression and severity. Objective To evaluate whether LUTS severity can be considered as a significant risk factor of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in the male population. Evidence acquisition A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The combination of the following keywords was adopted in a free-text strategy: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and cardiovascular, cardio, major adverse cardiac events, MACE, heart disease, heart, myocardial infarction, myocardial, infarction, stroke, ischemic events, ischemic, cardiac death, coronary syndrome. We included all cross-sectional and longitudinal trials enrolling men and comparing the prevalence or incidence of MACE in men with moderate to severe LUTS compared with those without LUTS or with mild LUTS. The studies in which only nocturia was evaluated were excluded from the analysis. Evidence synthesis Of 477 retrieved articles, 5 trials longitudinally reported the incidence of MACE in patients with moderate to severe LUTS in comparisons to those with mild or no LUTS and 10 studies reported the prevalence of history of MACE at enrollment. All were included in the present meta-analysis. Among cross-sectional studies, 38 218 patients and 2527 MACE were included in the meta-analysis. The mean age of enrolled patients was 62.2 Â± 8.0 yr. Presence of moderate to severe LUTS significantly increased the risk of reported history of MACE (p < 0.001). Metaregression analyses showed that the risk of MACE was lower in older patients and higher in those with diabetes. The association between LUTS-related MACE and diabetes was confirmed in a multivariate regression model after adjusting for age (adjusted r = 0.498; p < 0.0001). Longitudinal trials included 25 494 patients and 2291 MACE. The mean age of enrolled patients was 52.5 Â± 5.5 yr, and mean follow-up was 86.8 Â± 22.1 mo. Presence of moderate to severe LUTS was associated with an increased incidence of MACE compared with the rest of the sample (odds ratio: 1.68; 95% confidence interval, 1.13–2.50; p = 0.01). Conclusions Men with moderate to severe LUTS seem to have an increased risk of MACE. A holistic approach in considering the morbidities of aging men should be strongly encouraged and represents an important role for the practicing urologist.     Short-latency afferent inhibition and somato-sensory evoked potentials during the migraine cycle: surrogate markers of a cycling cholinergic thalamo-cortical drive?

    BACKGROUND: Short-latency afferent inhibition (SAI) consists of motor cortex inhibition induced by sensory afferents and depends on the excitatory effect of cholinergic thalamocortical projections on inhibitory GABAergic cortical networks. Given the electrophysiological evidence for thalamo-cortical dysrhythmia in migraine, we studied SAI in migraineurs during and between attacks and searched for correlations with somatosensory habituation, thalamocortical activation, and clinical features. METHODS: SAI was obtained by conditioning the transcranial magnetic stimulation-induced motor evoked potential (MEP) with an electric stimulus on the median nerve at the wrist with random stimulus intervals corresponding to the latency of individual somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) N20 plus 2, 4, 6, or 8\u2009ms. We recruited 30 migraine without aura patients, 16 between (MO), 14 during an attack (MI), and 16 healthy volunteers (HV). We calculated the slope of the linear regression between the unconditioned MEP amplitude and the 4-conditioned MEPs as a measure of SAI. We also measured SSEP amplitude habituation, and high-frequency oscillations (HFO) as an index of thalamo-cortical activation. RESULTS: Compared to HV, SAI, SSEP habituation and early SSEP HFOs were significantly reduced in MO patients between attacks, but enhanced during an attack. There was a positive correlation between degree of SAI and amplitude of early HFOs in HV, but not in MO or MI. CONCLUSIONS: The migraine cycle-dependent variations of SAI and SSEP HFOs are further evidence that facilitatory thalamocortical activation (of GABAergic networks in the motor cortex for SAI), likely to be cholinergic, is reduced in migraine between attacks, but increased ictally
