© The Animal Consortium 2011In the meat industry, the manipulation of fat deposition in cattle is of pivotal importance to improve production efficiency, carcass composition and ultimately meat quality. There is an increasing interest in the identification of key factors and molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of specific fat depots. This study aimed at elucidating the influence of breed and diet on adipose tissue membrane permeability and fluidity and their interplay on fat deposition in bovines. Two Portuguese autochthonous breeds, Alentejana and Barrosã, recognized as late- and early-maturing breeds, respectively, were chosen to examine the effects of breed and diet on fat deposition and on adipose membrane composition and permeability. Twenty-four male bovines from these breeds were fed on silage-based or concentrate-based diets for 11 months. Animals were slaughtered to determine their live slaughter and hot carcass weights, as well as weights of subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. Mesenteric fat depots were excised and used to isolate adipocyte membrane vesicles where cholesterol content, fatty acid profile as well as permeability and fluidity were determined. Total accumulation of neither subcutaneous nor visceral fat was influenced by breed. In contrast, mesenteric and omental fat depots weights were higher in concentrate-fed bulls relative to silage-fed animals. Membrane fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol in mesenteric adipose tissue were found to be independent of breed and diet. Moreover, the deposition of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids, which may influence membrane properties, were unchanged among experimental groups. Adipose membrane lipids from the mesenteric fat depot of ruminants were rich in saturated fatty acids, and unaffected by polyunsaturated fatty acids dietary levels. Our results provide evidence against the involvement of cellular membrane permeability to glycerol on fat accumulation in mesenteric fat tissue of concentrate-fed bovines, which is consistent with the unchanged membrane lipid profile found among experimental groups.

Local Density of States in Mesoscopic Samples from Scanning Gate Microscopy

We study the relationship between the local density of states (LDOS) and the conductance variation ΔG\Delta G in scanning-gate-microscopy experiments on mesoscopic structures as a charged tip scans above the sample surface. We present an analytical model showing that in the linear-response regime the conductance shift ΔG\Delta G is proportional to the Hilbert transform of the LDOS and hence a generalized Kramers-Kronig relation holds between LDOS and ΔG\Delta G. We analyze the physical conditions for the validity of this relationship both for one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems when several channels contribute to the transport. We focus on realistic Aharonov-Bohm rings including a random distribution of impurities and analyze the LDOS-ΔG\Delta G correspondence by means of exact numerical simulations, when localized states or semi-classical orbits characterize the wavefunction of the system.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

Effects of Grain Size on the Spectral Energy Distribution of Dusty Circumstellar Envelopes

We study the effects of dust grain size on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of spherical circumstellar envelopes. Based on the self-similarity relations of dusty SEDs derived by Ivezic & Elitzur (1997), we expect an approximate invariance of the IR SED for models with different grain sizes. Approximate invariance follows from the fact that differently sized grains have similar optical properties at long wavelengths where the dust reprocesses the starlight. In this paper, we discuss what are the physical requirements on the model parameters to maintain the approximate invariance of the IR SED. Single grain size models are studied for a wide range of grain sizes in three optical depth regimes. In this study, we find limits for the cases where the IR SED is and is not capable of conveying information about grain sizes, and to what extent it does so. We find that approximate invariance occurs for a much larger range of grain sizes than previously believed, and, when approximate invariance holds, the SED is controlled mainly by one parameter, the reprocessing optical depth, a quantity that measures the fraction of starlight that is absorbed by the dust grains. Models with a grain size distribution are studied as well. For these models, we find that, in many instances, the concept of approximate invariance may be extended from the IR SED to all wavelengths. This means that, for a wide range of optical depths, models with different grain size distributions will produce very similar SEDs and, hence, the reprocessing optical depth is the only quantity that can be unambiguously obtained from the SED. The observational consequences of this result are discussed in detail

Scanning Gate Spectroscopy of transport across a Quantum Hall Nano-Island

We explore transport across an ultra-small Quantum Hall Island (QHI) formed by closed quan- tum Hall edge states and connected to propagating edge channels through tunnel barriers. Scanning gate microscopy and scanning gate spectroscopy are used to first localize and then study a single QHI near a quantum point contact. The presence of Coulomb diamonds in the spectroscopy con- firms that Coulomb blockade governs transport across the QHI. Varying the microscope tip bias as well as current bias across the device, we uncover the QHI discrete energy spectrum arising from electronic confinement and we extract estimates of the gradient of the confining potential and of the edge state velocity.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

Meningococcal meningitis is an airborne disease that has overwhelmed the lives of many people for over a century now. There are factors that are connected to the spread of the disease. They include level of income, social behavior, housing condition, climate, environment and urbanization. The “African meningitis belt” which is a region located around west Africa is the most plagued by the disease. This study aims at exploring the deviational distribution and standard distance in relation to the effects that the urban sprawl has on the spatial pattern of the spread of the disease in Kaduna urban area. The Meningococcal meningitis reported cases (confirmed and unconfirmed) were used for the study and it was sourced from the public and private hospitals within Kaduna urban area. For each of those years, satellite images (quick bird) were used by digitizing the urban lands and comparing all the years together. Directional distribution and standard distance analysis were conducted using spatial statistical tools in ArcGIS 10.1. The results of the digitized imageries, the directional distribution, and the standard distance were analyzed so as to determine the relationship between urbanization and the disease spread. It was observed from the result that those years that had higher sprawl are more affected by the disease.

Imaging Electron Wave Functions Inside Open Quantum Rings

Combining Scanning Gate Microscopy (SGM) experiments and simulations, we demonstrate low temperature imaging of electron probability density Ψ2(x,y)|\Psi|^{2}(x,y) in embedded mesoscopic quantum rings (QRs). The tip-induced conductance modulations share the same temperature dependence as the Aharonov-Bohm effect, indicating that they originate from electron wavefunction interferences. Simulations of both Ψ2(x,y)|\Psi|^{2}(x,y) and SGM conductance maps reproduce the main experimental observations and link fringes in SGM images to Ψ2(x,y)|\Psi|^{2}(x,y).Comment: new titl
