A phenomenological approach to normal form modeling: a case study in laser induced nematodynamics
An experimental setting for the polarimetric study of optically induced
dynamical behavior in nematic liquid crystal films has allowed to identify most
notably some behavior which was recognized as gluing bifurcations leading to
chaos. This analysis of the data used a comparison with a model for the
transition to chaos via gluing bifurcations in optically excited nematic liquid
crystals previously proposed by G. Demeter and L. Kramer. The model of these
last authors, proposed about twenty years before, does not have the central
symmetry which one would expect for minimal dimensional models for chaos in
nematics in view of the time series. What we show here is that the simplest
truncated normal forms for gluing, with the appropriate symmetry and minimal
dimension, do exhibit time signals that are embarrassingly similar to the ones
found using the above mentioned experimental settings. The gluing bifurcation
scenario itself is only visible in limited parameter ranges and substantial
aspect of the chaos that can be observed is due to other factors. First, out of
the immediate neighborhood of the homoclinic curve, nonlinearity can produce
expansion leading to chaos when combined with the recurrence induced by the
homoclinic behavior. Also, pairs of symmetric homoclinic orbits create extreme
sensitivity to noise, so that when the noiseless approach contains a rich
behavior, minute noise can transform the complex damping into sustained chaos.
Leonid Shil'nikov taught us that combining global considerations and local
spectral analysis near critical points is crucial to understand the
phenomenology associated to homoclinic bifurcations. Here this helps us
construct a phenomenological approach to modeling experiments in nonlinear

Hypoglycemic, antiglycation, and cytoprotective properties of a phenol-rich extract from waste peel of punica granatum L. Var. Dente di cavallo DC2
Pomegranate peel is a natural source of phenolics, claimed to possess healing properties, among which are antioxidant and antidiabetic. In the present study, an ethyl acetate extract, obtained by Soxhlet from the peel of Dente di Cavallo DC2 pomegranate (PGE) and characterized to contain 4% w/w of ellagic acid, has been evaluated for its hypoglycemic, antiglycation, and antioxidative cytoprotective properties, in order to provide possible evidence for future nutraceutical applications. The α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition, interference with advanced glycation end-products (AGE) formation, and metal chelating abilities were studied. Moreover, the possible antioxidant cytoprotective properties of PGE under hyperglycemic conditions were assayed. Phenolic profile of the extract was characterized by integrated chromatographic and spectrophotometric methods. PGE resulted able to strongly inhibit the tested enzymes, especially α-glucosidase, and exerted chelating and antiglycation properties. Also, it counteracted the intracellular oxidative stress under hyperglycemic conditions, by reducing the levels of reactive oxygen species and total glutathione. Among the identified phenolics, rutin was the most abundant flavonoid (about 4 % w/w). Present results suggest PGE to be a possible remedy for hyperglycemia management and encourage further studies to exploit its promising properties

Mid Infrared Photometry of Mass-Losing AGB Stars
We present ground-based mid-infrared imaging for 27 M-, S- and C-type
Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. The data are compared with those of the
database available thanks to the IRAS, ISO, MSX and 2MASS catalogues. Our goal
is to establish relations between the IR colors, the effective temperature
, the luminosity and the mass loss rate , for improving
the effectiveness of AGB modelling. Bolometric (absolute) magnitudes are
obtained through distance compilations, and by applying previously-derived
bolometric corrections; the variability is also studied, using data accumulated
since the IRAS epoch. The main results are: i) Values of and for C
stars fit relations previously established by us, with Miras being on average
more evolved and mass losing than Semiregulars. ii) Moderate IR excesses (as
compared to evolutionary tracks) are found for S and M stars in our sample:
they are confirmed to originate from the dusty circumstellar environment. iii)
A larger reddening characterizes C-rich Miras and post-AGBs. In this case, part
of the excess is due to AGB models overestimating for C-stars, as a
consequence of the lack of suitable molecular opacities. This has a large
effect on the colors of C-rich sources and sometimes disentangling the
photospheric and circumstellar contributions is difficult; better model
atmospheres should be used in stellar evolutionary codes for C stars. iv) The
presence of a long-term variability at mid-IR wavelengths seems to be limited
to sources with maximum emission in the 8 -- 20 m region, usually Mira
variables (1/3 of our sample). Most Semiregular and post-AGB stars studied here

Age- and sex-related variations in platelet count in Italy: a proposal of reference ranges based on 40987 subjects' data
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although several studies demonstrated that platelet count is higher in women, decreases with age, and is influenced by genetic background, most clinical laboratories still use the reference interval 150-400×10(9) platelets/L for all subjects. The present study was to identify age- and sex-specific reference intervals for platelet count. METHODS: We analysed electronic records of subjects enrolled in three population-based studies that investigated inhabitants of seven Italian areas including six geographic isolates. After exclusion of patients with malignancies, liver diseases, or inherited thrombocytopenias, which could affect platelet count, reference intervals were estimated from 40,987 subjects with the non parametric method computing the 2.5° and 97.5° percentiles. RESULTS: Platelet count was similar in men and women until the age of 14, but subsequently women had steadily more platelets than men. The number of platelets decreases quickly in childhood, stabilizes in adulthood, and further decreases in oldness. The final result of this phenomenon is that platelet count in old age was reduced by 35% in men and by 25% in women compared with early infancy. Based on these findings, we estimated reference intervals for platelet count ×10(9)/L in children (176-452), adult men (141-362), adult women (156-405), old men (122-350) and, old women (140-379). Moreover, we calculated an extended reference interval that takes into account the differences in platelet count observed in different geographic areas. CONCLUSIONS: The age-, sex-, and origin-related variability of platelet count is very wide, and the patient-adapted reference intervals we propose change the thresholds for diagnosing both thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis in Italy

Cardiac simulation has moved from early life-saving pacemakers meant only to prevent asystole to current devices capable of physiologic stimulation for the treatment of heart rhythm and heart failure, that are also intended for remote patient and disease-progression monitoring. The actual vision of contemporary pacing aims to correct the electrophysiologic roots of mechanical inefficiency regardless of underlying structural heart diseases. The awareness of the residual cardiac dyssynchrony related to customary cardiac pacing has changed the concept of what truly represents “physiologic pacing”. On a different perspective, leadless stimulation to abolish CIED surgery and prevent lead-related complications is becoming a priority both for young device recipients and for frail, elderly patients.
