Italo-Australians during the second world war: Some perceptions of internment
The entry of Italy into the Second World War brought considerable disruption to the over thirty thousand strong Italo-Australian community whose presence was seen by the Australian authorities as a serious potential threat to national
security. About 4,700 mainly male Italo-Australians were incarcerated in internment camps while women and children were left to fend for themselves in a highly hostile environment. Although a significant social-historical phenomenon, very few and at best highly partial studies (such as Bosworth and Ugolini 1992, Cresciani 1993, Martinuzzi O’Brien 1993, 2002, in press)
have been produced on the subject. Many Italo-Australians however, have tended to reflect, often from a victimological viewpoint, on the internment experience in their memoirs and reminiscences. This paper provides an additional dimension to the topic by examining oral and written accounts
produced by some Italo-Australian protagonists of the internment experience with a view to considering how their albeit subjective perceptions provide a particular viewpoint of one way in which Australia reacted to the events of
war
Strong Quasiparticle Trapping In A 6x6 Array Of Vanadium-Aluminum Superconducting Tunnel Junctions
A 6x6 array of symmetrical V/Al/AlOx/Al/V Superconducting Tunnel Junctions
(STJs) was fabricated. The base electrode is a high quality epitaxial film with
a residual resistance ratio (RRR) of ~30. The top film is polycrystalline with
an RRR of ~10. The leakage currents of the 25x25 mm^2 junctions are of the
order of 0.5 pA/mm^2 at a bias voltage of 100 mV, which corresponds to a
dynamical resistance of ~ 3 10^5 ohms. When the array was illuminated by 6 keV
X-ray photons from a 55Fe radioactive source the single photon charge output
was found to be low and strongly dependent on the temperature of the devices.
This temperature dependence at X-ray energies can be explained by the existence
of a very large number of quasiparticle (QP) traps in the Vanadium. QPs are
confined in these traps, having a lower energy gap than the surrounding
material, and are therefore not available for tunneling. The number of traps
can be derived from the energy dependence of the responsivity of the devices
(charge output per electron volt of photon input energy).Comment: 4 pages. presented at Low Temperature Detectors-
Novel technique for monitoring the performance of the LAT instrument on board the GLAST satellite
The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is an observatory designed
to perform gamma-ray astronomy in the energy range 20 MeV to 300 GeV, with
supporting measurements for gamma-ray bursts from 10 keV to 25 MeV. GLAST will
be launched at the end of 2007, opening a new and important window on a wide
variety of high energy astrophysical phenomena . The main instrument of GLAST
is the Large Area Telescope (LAT), which provides break-through high-energy
measurements using techniques typically used in particle detectors for collider
experiments. The LAT consists of 16 identical towers in a four-by-four grid,
each one containing a pair conversion tracker and a hodoscopic crystal
calorimeter, all covered by a segmented plastic scintillator anti-coincidence
shield. The scientific return of the instrument depends very much on how
accurately we know its performance, and how well we can monitor it and correct
potential problems promptly. We report on a novel technique that we are
developing to help in the characterization and monitoring of LAT by using the
power of classification trees to pinpoint in a short time potential problems in
the recorded data. The same technique could also be used to evaluate the effect

Profiling of pluripotency factors in individual stem cells and early embryos [preprint]
Major cell fate decisions are governed by sequence-specific transcription factors (TFs) that act in small cell populations within developing embryos. To understand how TFs regulate cell fate it is important to identify their genomic binding sites in these populations. However, current methods cannot profile TFs genome-wide at or near the single cell level. Here we adapt the CUT&RUN method to profile chromatin proteins in low cell numbers, mapping TF-DNA interactions in single cells and individual pre-implantation embryos for the first time. Using this method, we demonstrate that the pluripotency TF NANOG is significantly more dependent on the SWI/SNF family ATPase BRG1 for association with its genomic targets in vivo than in cultured cells, a finding that could not have been made using traditional approaches. Ultra-low input CUT&RUN (uliCUT&RUN) enables interrogation of TF binding from low cell numbers, with broad applicability to rare cell populations of importance in development or disease
Pesticide and plasticizer residues in citrus essential oils from different countries.
Residue analyses are very important in the quality control of citrus essential oils. Organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides, phosphorated plasticizers and chloroparaffins contamination were investigated by HRGC with FPD and ECD detectors in 120 citrus essential oils produced in Italy and in 70 from other countries in the crop year 2006-2007. Results showed that the largest pesticide quantities were found in oils from Brazil and Spain. The presence of such residues might be the result of an improper use of pesticide in citrus growing or of previous contamination of the extractors. However, the pesticide levels showed a measurable decrease in relation to past production years. The absence of phosporated plasticizers and chloroparaffins can be the result of either improvement of the procedures used during the production cycle or in the storage of the essential oils compared with previous years
High energy emission from galaxy clusters and particle acceleration due to MHD turbulence
In the next years the FERMI gamma ray telescope and the Cherenkov telescopes
will put very stringent constraints to models of gamma ray emission from galaxy
clusters providing crucial information on relativistic particles in the
inter-galactic-medium. We derive the broad band non-thermal spectrum of galaxy
clusters in the context of general calculations in which relativistic particles
(protons and secondary electrons due to proton-proton collisions) interact with
MHD turbulence generated in the cluster volume during cluster mergers, and

The nero lucano pig breed: Recovery and variability
The Nero Lucano (NL) pig is a black coat colored breed characterized by a remarkable ability to adapt to the difficult territory and climatic conditions of Basilicata region in Southern Italy. In the second half of the twentieth century, technological innovation, agricultural evolution, new breeding methods and the demand for increasingly lean meat brought the breed almost to extinction. Only in 2001, thanks to local institutions such as: the Basilicata Region, the University of Basilicata, the Regional Breeders Association and the Medio Basento mountain community, the NL pig returned to populate the area with the consequent possibility to appreciate again its specific cured meat products. We analyzed the pedigrees recorded by the breeders and the Illumina Porcine SNP60 BeadChip genotypes in order to obtain the genetic structure of the NL pig. Results evidenced that this population is characterized by long mean generation intervals (up to 3.5 yr), low effective population size (down to 7.2) and high mean inbreeding coefficients (FMOL = 0.53, FROH = 0.39). This picture highlights the low level of genetic variability and the critical issues to be faced for the complete recovery of this population
