    Two-photon state selection and angular momentum polarization probed by velocity map imaging: Application to H atom photofragment angular distributions from the photodissociation of two-photon state selected HCl and HBr

    A formalism for calculating the angular momentum polarization of an atom or a molecule following two-photon excitation of a J-selected state is presented. This formalism is used to interpret the H atom photofragment angular distributions from single-photon dissociation of two-photon rovibronically state selected HCl and HBr prepared via a Q-branch transition. By comparison of the angular distributions measured using the velocity map imaging technique with the theoretical model it is shown that single-photon dissociation of two-photon prepared states can be used for pathway identification, allowing for the identification of the virtual state symmetry in the two-photon absorption and/or the symmetry of the dissociative state. It is also shown that under conditions of excitation with circularly polarized light, or for excitation via non-Q-branch transitions with linearly polarized light the angular momentum polarization is independent of the dynamics of the two-photon transition and analytically computable.©2004 American Institute of Physics

    Determination of the contamination level in groundwater of the Sebkha of El-mahmel NE Algeria

    The study area is located in the municipality of El-Mahmel located in the extension East and North east of the Aurès Nemamcha mountains in the city of Khenchela, Northern east of Algeria. This study is related to a research on groundwater pollution from anthropogenic emissions and secondly by the migration of salt water intrusion from the Sebkha in response to intensive pumping. The physico-chemical characterization of water by measurements on site and laboratory analysis allowed defining the degree of saltwater contamination and its spatial spread. This salt contamination of groundwater would be accentuated by the discharge of wastewater into the Sebkha, the irrational use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and intensive pumping. By this action, we alerted the government to the need to build a wastewater treatment plant, the need for a delineation of protection areas or would be prohibited to establish drilling. Finally, make farmers of El Mahmel aware of the risk of deterioration in the water quality monitoring of disease outbreaks and soil infertility by the accumulation of salts (alkalization and sodization of soil) with the disappearance of all cultures if they not reduce pumping water

    Optical absorption in boron clusters B6_{6} and B6+_{6}^{+} : A first principles configuration interaction approach

    The linear optical absorption spectra in neutral boron cluster B6_{6} and cationic B6+_{6}^{+} are calculated using a first principles correlated electron approach. The geometries of several low-lying isomers of these clusters were optimized at the coupled-cluster singles doubles (CCSD) level of theory. With these optimized ground-state geometries, excited states of different isomers were computed using the singles configuration-interaction (SCI) approach. The many body wavefunctions of various excited states have been analysed and the nature of optical excitation involved are found to be of collective, plasmonic type.Comment: 22 pages, 38 figures.     The year 2010 was characterized by devastating flooding in central and eastern Europe, including Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This study focuses on floods that occurred during the summer of 2010 in the Prut River basin, which has a high percentage of hydrotechnical infrastructure. Strong floods occurred in eastern Romania on the Prut River, which borders the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and the Siret River. Atmospheric instability from 21 June to 1 July 2010 caused remarkable amounts of rain, with rates of 51.2 mm/50 min and 42.0 mm/30 min. In the middle Prut basin, there are numerous ponds that help mitigate floods as well as provide water for animals, irrigation, and so forth. The peak discharge of the Prut River during the summer of 2010 was 2310 m3 s−1 at the Rădăuţi-Prut gauging station. High discharges were also recorded on downstream tributaries, including the Baseu, Jijia, and Miletin. High discharges downstream occurred because of water from the middle basin and the backwater from the Danube (a historic discharge of 16 300 m3 s−1). The floods that occurred in the Prut basin in the summer of 2010 could not be controlled completely because the discharges far exceeded foreseen values

    Modeling the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Communities: Some Considerations

    Objectives: This article articulates the complexity of modeling in First Nations, Metis, and Inuit contexts by providing the results of a modeling exercise completed at the request of the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba. Methods: We developed a model using the impact of a previous pandemic (the 2009 H1N1) to generate estimates.Results: The lack of readily available data has resulted in a model that assumes homogeneity of communities in terms of health status, behaviour, and infrastructure limitations. While homogeneity may be a reasonable assumption for province-wide planning, First Nation communities and Tribal Councils require more precise information in order to plan effectively. Metis and urban Inuit communities, in contrast, have access to much less information, making the role of Indigenous organizations mandated to serve the needs of these populations that much more difficult.Conclusion: For many years, Indigenous organizations have advocated for the need to have access to current and precise data to meet their needs. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the importance of timely and accurate community-based data to support pandemic responses

    Integrating epigenetic, genetic, and phenotypic data to uncover gene-region associations with triglycerides in the GOLDN study

    Abstract Background There has been significant interest in investigating genome-wide and epigenome-wide associations with lipids. Testing at the gene or region level may improve power in such studies. Methods We analyze chromosome 11 cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) methylation levels and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes from the original Genetics of Lipid Lowering Drugs and Diet Network (GOLDN) study, aiming to explore the association between triglyceride levels and genetic/epigenetic factors. We apply region-based tests of association to methylation and genotype data, in turn, which seek to increase power by reducing the dimension of the gene-region variables. We also investigate whether integrating 2 omics data sets (methylation and genotype) into the triglyceride association analysis helps or hinders detection of candidate gene regions. Results Gene-region testing identified 1 CpG region that had been previously reported in the GOLDN study data and another 2 gene regions that are also associated with triglyceride levels. Testing on the combined genetic and epigenetic data detected the same genes as using epigenetic or genetic data alone. Conclusions Region-based testing can uncover additional association signals beyond those detected using single-variant testing
