The solar gravitational figure: J2 and J4
The theory of the solar gravitational figure is derived including the effects of differential rotation. It is shown that J sub 4 is smaller than J sub 2 by a factor of about 10 rather than being of order J sub 2 squared as would be expected for rigid rotation. The dependence of both J sub 2 and J sub 4 on envelope mass is given. High order p-mode oscillation frequencies provide a constraint on solar structure which limits the range in envelope mass to the range 0.01 M sub E/solar mass 0.04. For an assumed rotation law in which the surface pattern of differential rotation extends uniformly throughout the convective envelope, this structural constraint limits the ranges of J sub 2 and J sub 4 in units of 10 to the -8th power to 10 J sub 2 15 and 0.6 -J sub 4 1.5. Deviations from these ranges would imply that the rotation law is not constant with depth and would provide a measure of this rotation law
A Safety Case Pattern for Model-Based Development Approach
In this paper, a safety case pattern is introduced to facilitate the presentation of a correctness argument for a system implemented using formal methods in the development process. We took advantage of our experience in constructing a safety case for the Patient Controlled Analgesic (PCA) infusion pump, to define this safety case pattern. The proposed pattern is appropriate to be instantiated within the safety cases constructed for systems that are developed by applying model-based approaches

Broadcasting graphic war violence: the moral face of Channel 4
Drawing on empirical data from Channel 4 (C4) regarding the broadcasting of violent war imagery, and positioned within Goffman’s notion of the interaction ritual (1959, 1967), this article investigates how C4 negotiate potentially competing commercial, regulatory and moral requirements through processes of discretionary decision-making. Throughout, the article considers the extent to which these negotiations are presented through a series of ‘imaginings’ – of C4 and its audience – which serve to simultaneously guide and legitimate the decisions made. This manifestation of imaginings moves us beyond more blanket explanations of ‘branding’ and instead allows us to see the final programmes as the end product of a series of complex negotiations and interactions between C4 and those multiple external parties significant to the workings of their organization. The insights gleaned from this case study are important beyond the workings of C4 because they help elucidate how all institutions and organizations may view, organize and justify their practices (to both themselves and others) within the perceived constraints in which they operate
Hierarchical galaxy formation and substructure in the Galaxy's stellar halo
We develop an explicit model for the formation of the stellar halo from
tidally disrupted, accreted dwarf satellites in the cold dark matter (CDM)
framework, focusing on predictions testable with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS) and other wide-field surveys. Subhalo accretion and orbital evolution
are calculated using a semi-analytic approach within the Press-Schechter
formalism. Motivated by our previous work, we assume that low-mass subhalos (v
< 30 km/s) can form significant populations of stars only if they accreted a
substantial fraction of their mass before the epoch of reionization. With this
assumption, the model reproduces the observed velocity function of galactic
satellites in the Local Group, solving the ``dwarf satellite problem'' without
modifying the popular LCDM cosmology. The disrupted satellites yield a stellar
distribution with a total mass and radial density profile consistent with those
observed for the Milky Way stellar halo. Most significantly, the model predicts
the presence of many large-scale, coherent substructures in the outer halo.
These substructures are remnants of individual, tidally disrupted dwarf
satellite galaxies. Substructure is more pronounced at large galactocentric
radii because of the smaller number density of tidal streams and the longer
orbital times. This model provides a natural explanation for the coherent
structures in the outer stellar halo found in the SDSS commissioning data, and
it predicts that many more such structures should be found as the survey covers
more of the sky. The detection (or non-detection) and characterization of such
structures could eventually test variants of the CDM scenario, especially those
that aim to solve the dwarf satellite problem by enhancing satellite

The Meinunger "Nicht Rote" Objects
Four high-latitude slow variable stars have been noted by Meinunger (1972) as
"nicht rote" ("not red") objects and thus curious. We have previously reported
(Margon & Deutsch 1997) that one of these objects, CC Boo, is in fact a QSO.
Here we present observations demonstrating that the remaining three are also
highly variable active galactic nuclei. The most interesting object of the four
is perhaps S 10765 (= NGP9 F324-0276706), which proves to be a resolved galaxy
at z=0.063. Despite the rapid and large reported variability amplitude (~1.6
mag), the spectrum is that of a perfectly normal galaxy, with no emission lines
or evident nonthermal continuum. We also present new spectroscopic and
photometric observations for AR CVn, suggested by Meinunger to be an RR Lyrae
star despite its very faint magnitude (=19.4). The object is indeed one of
the most distant RR Lyrae stars known, at a galactocentric distance of ~40 kpc.Comment: Accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society

Explaining the effectiveness of performance-based logistics: a quantitative examination

organizations with a contractual mechanism that reduces the life cycle costs of their systems. PBL
accomplishes this by establishing contracts that focus on the delivery of performance not parts. PBL
establishes a metric based governance structure where suppliers make more profit when they invest in
logistics process improvements, or system redesign, that reduces total cost of ownership. While work
has been done to outline an overall PBL theoretical framework, the underlying theory explaining the
enablers that lead to organizational and team-level, team-goal alignment associated with the PBL
governance structure requires testing. The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively test previously
posited relationships between enablers of PBL and PBL effectiveness. An additional objective is to
