    Record of oceanic squid Symplectoteuthis oualaniensis(Lesson,1830) off Maharashtra Coast

    On 18-11-2003 about 350kg. of Symplectoteuthis oualaniensis was landed at Sassoon Dock by gagra jal (Gill net) along with hook and line.The dorsal mantle length ranged between 300mm and 400mm. The single speciman brought to the laboratory measured 360mm in length and weighed 1.450kg.The gut was full with thoroughly macerated and pulpy food material,which could not be identified

    The systematic archaeological survey was carried out around the 0-10 km radius of Mahalena cave site. Documentation of natural resources available within the estimated radius. A few satellite settlements or supportive settlements were identified within the radius of Mahalena cave. The chief aim of this research is to understand the suitability of the landscape and natural resources available within the vicinity of this archaeological site. Mahalena cave site was subjected to large-scale excavation for several seasons by Sri Lankan and Indian archaeologists. A Few seasons of detailed excavations have provided us with sufficient data to study the resource exploitation pattern around the Mahalena cave. The study of the resource exploitation pattern or site catchment study is one of the important tools to reconstruct the economy of ancient settlers of any particular region. Resources lying within the economic range of individual archaeological sites support ancient inhabitants for their day-to-day living. The current research will be helpful in identifying suitable factors which lead the Prehistoric and Early Historic inhabitants of the Mahalena cave to choose this particular location for their settlement.  DOI: http://doi.org/10.31357/fhss/vjhss.v08i02.1

    Online Databases Backbone for Teaching and Research: Case Study of Rajarambapu Institute of Technology, affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra (India)

    The library facilities and services have changed during the pandemic from both the librarians’ and library users’ points of view. Research and academic communication disseminated via emerging online databases and resulted in creating awareness and utilization of electronic resources remotely. The present study investigates the availability, awareness, and use of online databases subscribed from direct publishers and also accessed from Shivaji University, Kolhapur, India, under the INFEED project by Rajarambapu Institute of Technology (RIT) staff members and students during the lockdown period. A mixed research approach (i.e. quantitative and qualitative) has been applied by using an online questionnaire as a data collection tool. Total 128 filled questionnaires were received with an 85.3 percent response rate, and it is found to be valid for analysis. More than 90 percent of the respondents were aware of the Online Databases. Science Direct is a highly used database by 50 percent of the users, majority i. e. 75 percent of the respondents use E-books as a source of information from an online database. The study also found some problems faced by the respondents, such as network problems, technical problems, lack of guidance, etc. Finally, the study made it very clear that most of the users are satisfied with the Online Databases provided by the institutional library

    Callosbruchus maculatus Resistance in Some Wild Relatives and Interspecific Derivatives of Pigeonpea

    The present study of Screening of some wild relatives of pigeonpea against bruchid revealed that amongst the 4 Cajanus species, comprising of seven accessions, bruchid damage ranged between 14 and 30%, compared to 78% in the commercially cultivated pigeonpea variety ICPL 85010. Wild species Cajanus scarabaeoides accession ICPW 130 and C. platycarpus accession ICPW 66 had lowest damage (14% and 16% respectively). The larval/pupal period was prolonged in wild accessions (42 – 55days) compared to 33 days on the susceptible control ICPL 85010 indicating the antibiosis mechanism of resistance in the wild species. Though there was high oviposition on the seeds of interspecific derivative of C. platycarpus A 4-10-7-19, it had the least damage (10%). In the rest of the derivatives the damage rating ranged between 10 and 55% compared to 80% damage in the susceptible control, reflecting the potential of utilizing these wild species derivatives in pigeonpea crop improvement to overcome the Bruchid damage

    Characterization and its implication on beneficiation of low grade iron ore by gravity separation

    Studies were undertaken on low grade iron ore sample from Noamundi iron ore mines. The objective of this study was to examine the possibility of the physical beneficiation of low grade iron ore sample by physical methods for the blast furnace route of iron production. The present investigation relies on petrography and ore mineralogical characterization, ore textures (primary, secondary, metamorphic), liberation characters and its impact on the mineral beneficiation methods to produce quality concentrate. The geological characters, alteration mineralogy, morphometric variation, ore microscopy (using model microscope with transmitted and reflected light) and thereby understanding the genesis has given proper insight into the occurrence of various minerals. In addition to this, representative samples were employed for detailed investigation by using XRD, SEM-EDS and cathodoluminescence (CL) studies for confirmation of major as well as minor ore minerals and associated gangue minerals. Investigations suggest that lateritic iron ore samples obtained from the study area are composed of hematite (two generations), goethite (two generations) and limonitic material (younger generation) in association with major gangue minerals such as clay minerals (kaolinite, illite), bauxitic minerals(gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore), cryptocrystalline silica(japer, chert) and crystalline quartz as well as apatite and collophane. Fair liberation obtained below 74 micron size. It was interesting to find that inspite of the complex mineralogy of iron ore, beneficiation results using gravity separation like multi gravity separator (MGS), particularly in finer size ranges was encouraging. The result of ore-gangue mineralogical studies were found quite useful in evaluating the separation efficacy of gravity separation process.
