Electron temperature profiles from one daytime equatorial flight and two nighttime midlatitude flights are discussed. The last of these three flights, Nike Apache 14.533, showed elevated E region temperatures which are interpreted as the heating effect of a stable auroral red arc

    Navigation of the TSS-1 mission

    The Tethered Satellite System Mission was analyzed to determine its impacts on the Mission Control Center (MCC) Navigation section's ability to maintain an accurate state vector for the Space Shuttle during nominal and off-nominal flight operations. Tether dynamics expected on the Shuttle introduces new phenomena when determining the best estimation of its position and velocity. In the analysis, emphasis was placed on determining the navigation state vectors accuracies resulting when the tether induced forces were and were not modeled as an additional acceleration upon processing tracking measurements around a TSS-1 trajectory. Results of the analyses show that when the forces are not modeled in the state vector generation process, the resulting solution state reflects a solution about the center of gravity of the tethered system and not that of the orbiter. The Navigation team's ability to provide accurate state vector estimates necessary for trajectory planning are impeded. In addition to this consequent, is an impact on Onboard Navigation state vector accuracies. These analyses will show that in order to preserve an accurate state onboard the orbiter a new operational procedure would have to be adopted

    A dish Stirling solar receiver (DSSR) and a heat pipe solar receiver with TES (HPSR) for a 25 kWe dish Stirling solar power system are described. The thermal performance and cost effectiveness of each are analyzed minute by minute over the equivalent of one year of solar insolation. Existing designs of these two systems were used as a basis for the study; TES concepts for the DSSR and alternative TES concepts for the HPSR are presented. Parametric performance and cost studies were performed to determine the operating and cost characteristics of these systems. Data are reported for systems (1) without TES and with varying amounts of TES, (2) with and without a fossil fuel combustor, (3) with varying solar to fossil power input, and (4) with different system control assumptions. The principal effects of TES duration, collector area, engine efficiency, and fuel cost sensitivity are indicated. Development needs for each of the systems are discussed and the need and nature of possible future TES solar modular experiments are presented and discussed

    Evidence That Luminant and Equiluminant Motion Signals Are Integrated by Directionally Selective Mechanisms

    Three experiments tested whether motion information for nonequiluminant (luminant) and equiluminant dots affects direction judgments when both types of stimuli are moving simultaneously in the same display. The motion directions for the two sets of dots were manipulated to produce four direction differences (0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°). The equiluminant dots were moved in a perfectly correlated fashion, but the percentage of correlated motion for the luminant dots was varied. When subjects judged whether the directions of the equiluminant and luminant dots were the same or different, performance for the conditions with 0°, 60°, and 90° difference improved as the percentage of correlated luminant motion increased. The same result occurred for a control display that contained two sets of luminant dots. However, for the 30° difference, performance was at chance level for the control display, but dropped below chance for the equiluminant - luminant display. When subjects indicated just the direction of the luminant dots, judgments were not affected by equiluminant motion. Judgments for the equiluminant dots also were accurate, except for the conditions with 30° difference; these responses were biased by the luminant motion, indicating some form of motion capture. The interactive effects are discussed in terms of a directionally selective mechanism that combines equiluminant and luminant motion signals

    Designs for the ATDRSS tri-band reflector antenna

    Two approaches to design a tri-band reflector antenna for the Advanced TDRSS are examined. Two reflector antenna configurations utilizing frequency selective surfaces for operation in three frequency bands, S, Ku, and Ka, are proposed. Far-field patterns and the antenna feed losses were computed for each configuration. An offset-fed single reflector antenna configuration was adapted for conceptual spacecraft design. CADAM drawings were completed and a 1/13th scale model of the spacecraft was constructed

    Self-Regulation in a Web-Based Course: A Case Study

    Little is known about how successful students in Web-based courses self-regulate their learning. This descriptive case study used a social cognitive model of self-regulated learning (SRL) to investigate how six graduate students used and adapted traditional SRL strategies to complete tasks and cope with challenges in a Web-based technology course; it also explored motivational and environmental influences on strategy use. Primary data sources were three transcribed interviews with each of the students over the course of the semester, a transcribed interview with the course instructor, and the students’ reflective journals. Archived course documents, including transcripts of threaded discussions and student Web pages, were secondary data sources. Content analysis of the data indicated that these students used many traditional SRL strategies, but they also adapted planning, organization, environmental structuring, help seeking, monitoring, record keeping, and self-reflection strategies in ways that were unique to the Web-based learning environment. The data also suggested that important motivational influences on SRL strategy use—self-efficacy, goal orientation, interest, and attributions—were shaped largely by student successes in managing the technical and social environment of the course. Important environmental influences on SRL strategy use included instructor support, peer support, and course design. Implications for online course instructors and designers, and suggestions for future research are offered

    Bacterial lipopolysaccharide potentiates type II collagen-induced arthritis in mice

    Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) is an immunologically relevant animal model of human rheumatoid arthritis. Studies comparing the disease incidence in genetically susceptible male and female DBA/1LacJ mice demonstrated that under low density/low stress housing conditions, female mice had earlier onset (day 35) and higher disease incidence (25%) than the male mice (17% at day 49) when immunized with bovine type II collagen. A single subcutaneous or intraperitoneal injection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) 17–24 days after collagen immunization greatly potentiated this standard CIA model in a dose related manner. 20–40 μg of LPS accelerated the onset of disease from day 35 to day 21 and exacerbated the clinical severity score from 0.27 to 2.00 at day 42. A similar administration of 6 μg of recombinant interleukin-β produced a comparable potentiated CIA model. The acute phase protein, serum amyloid P (SAP), was elevated in the serum at day 26 to 440 μg ml−1 for the LPS potentiated CIA mice compared to 65 μg ml−1 in the non-potentiated immunized CIA mice. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.78) between SAP levels and disease expression in the LPS treated CIA mice. The rapidity and uniformity of disease expression in this LPS potentiated CIA model will allow more and different drugs to be evaluated with a smaller number of animals

    Top-Down Impact Through a Bottom-Up Mechanism. In Situ Effects of Limpet Grazing on Growth, Light Requirements and Survival of the Eelgrass Zostera marina

    Temporal changes in abundance, size, productivity, resource allocation and light requirements of a subtidal eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) population were followed for 2 yr after the September 1993 appearance of a previously rare oval form of the commensal limpet Tectura depicta (Berry) in Monterey Bay, California, USA, By exclusively targeting the epidermis, limpet grazing impaired photosynthetic performance but left respiratory demand, meristematic growth and more than 90 % of the leaf biomass intact, The resulting low P:R ratios of grazed plants raised the light requirements for the maintenance of positive carbon balance almost 2-fold relative to healthy ungrazed plants and prevented the summertime accumulation of internal carbon reserves. Shoot density in this once-continuously vegetated 30 ha meadow declined from more than 50 shoots m-2 (2230 g fresh wt [FW] m-2) to sparse patches supporting an average of 16 shoots m-2 (380 g FW m-2). More than 50 % of the continuously vegetated meadow was converted to bare sand despite ambient light availability and water temperatures that were favorable for growth of healthy, ungrazed plants. Plant size declined by 50 % and internal sugar reserves declined more than 4-fold within 6 mo after the appearance of T. depicta, Plant losses were most extensive during winter, when internal carbon reserves were minimal, The dramatic decline in eelgrass vigor and abundance reported here, despite a physical environment that was favorable for healthy eelgrass survival, illustrates the amplification of top-down control by this relatively inconspicuous limpet through a feeding mechanism that specifically impairs photosynthesis, a bottom-up process
