Mott-Superfluid transition in bosonic ladders
We show that in a commensurate bosonic ladder, a quantum phase transition
occurs between a Mott insulator and a superfluid when interchain hopping
increases. We analyse the properties of such a transition as well as the
physical properties of the two phases. We discuss the physical consequences for

Decays of Baryons --- Quark Model versus Large-
We study nonleptonic decays of the orbitally excited, \su6 \rep{70}-plet
baryons in order to test the hypothesis that the successes of the
nonrelativistic quark model have a natural explanation in the large- limit
of QCD. By working in a Hartree approximation, we isolate a specific set of
operators that contribute to the observed s- and d-wave decays in leading order
in . We fit our results to the current experimental decay data, and make
predictions for a number of allowed but unobserved modes. Our tentative
conclusion is that there is more to the nonrelativistic quark model of baryons

Zero-temperature generalized phase diagram of the 4d transition metals under pressure
We use an accurate implementation of density functional theory (DFT) to
calculate the zero-temperature generalized phase diagram of the 4 series of
transition metals from Y to Pd as a function of pressure and atomic number
. The implementation used is full-potential linearized augmented plane waves
(FP-LAPW), and we employ the exchange-correlation functional recently developed
by Wu and Cohen. For each element, we obtain the ground-state energy for
several crystal structures over a range of volumes, the energy being converged
with respect to all technical parameters to within meV/atom. The
calculated transition pressures for all the elements and all transitions we
have found are compared with experiment wherever possible, and we discuss the
origin of the significant discrepancies. Agreement with experiment for the
zero-temperature equation of state is generally excellent. The generalized
phase diagram of the 4 series shows that the major boundaries slope towards
lower with increasing for the early elements, as expected from the
pressure induced transfer of electrons from states to states, but are
almost independent of for the later elements. Our results for Mo indicate a
transition from bcc to fcc, rather than the bcc-hcp transition expected from

Accelerated economic recovery in countries powered by renewables
The human economy is in effect a subsystem of the biosphere. Ecosystems provide natural resources that are fundamental to both societal well-being and economic performance. Here, we show how recovery of national economies from systemic crises can be moderated by the natural resources used to power them. By examining data from 133 systemic economic crisis events in 98 countries over 40 years, we found that countries relying on a broad range of electricity sources experienced extended recovery times from crises, though that effect was tempered somewhat when the relative contribution of those sources was increasingly balanced. However, the best predictor of economic recovery was the extent of reliance on renewable energy—we found that economic recovery tends to be swiftest in countries powered primarily by renewable energy sources. These findings have profound implications for global energy policy and reveal the need to consider both the composition and diversity of energy sources in models of economic resilience
Toward a structural understanding of turbulent drag reduction: nonlinear coherent states in viscoelastic shear flows
Nontrivial steady flows have recently been found that capture the main
structures of the turbulent buffer layer. We study the effects of polymer
addition on these "exact coherent states" (ECS) in plane Couette flow. Despite
the simplicity of the ECS flows, these effects closely mirror those observed
experimentally: Structures shift to larger length scales, wall-normal
fluctuations are suppressed while streamwise ones are enhanced, and drag is
reduced. The mechanism underlying these effects is elucidated. These results

Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy in BaRuO systems
We investigated the temperature-dependence of the Raman spectra of a
nine-layer BaRuO single crystal and a four-layer BaRuO epitaxial film,
which show pseudogap formations in their metallic states. From the polarized
and depolarized spectra, the observed phonon modes are assigned properly
according to the predictions of group theory analysis. In both compounds, with
decreasing temperature, while modes show a strong hardening, (or
) modes experience a softening or no significant shift. Their different
temperature-dependent behaviors could be related to a direct Ru metal-bonding
through the face-sharing of RuO. It is also observed that another
mode of the oxygen participating in the face-sharing becomes split at low
temperatures in the four layer BaRuO. And, the temperature-dependence of
the Raman continua between 250 600 cm is strongly correlated to
the square of the plasma frequency. Our observations imply that there should be
a structural instability in the face-shared structure, which could be closely
related to the pseudogap formation of BaRuO systems.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. to be published in Phys. Rev.
Effect of pressure on the Raman modes of antimony
The effect of pressure on the zone-center optical phonon modes of antimony in
the A7 structure has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The A_g and E_g
frequencies exhibit a pronounced softening with increasing pressure, the effect
being related to a gradual suppression of the Peierls-like distortion of the A7
phase relative to a cubic primitive lattice. Also, both Raman modes broaden
significantly under pressure. Spectra taken at low temperature indicate that
the broadening is at least partly caused by phonon-phonon interactions. We also
report results of ab initio frozen-phonon calculations of the A_g and E_g mode
frequencies. Presence of strong anharmonicity is clearly apparent in calculated
total energy versus atom displacement relations. Pronounced nonlinearities in
the force versus displacement relations are observed. Structural instabilities
of the Sb-A7 phase are briefly addressed in the Appendix.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Power laws in a 2-leg ladder of interacting spinless fermions
We use the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group to study the single-particle
and two-particle correlation functions of spinless fermions in the ground state
of a quarter-filled ladder. This ladder consists of two chains having an
in-chain extended Coulomb interaction reaching to third neighbor and coupled by
inter-chain hopping. Within our short numerical coherence lengths, typically
reaching ten to twenty sites, we find a strong renormalization of the
interchain hopping and the existence of a dimensional crossover at smaller
interactions. We also find power exponents for single-particle hopping and
interchain polarization consistent with the single chain. The total charge
correlation function has a larger power exponent and shows signs of a crossover
from incoherent fermion hopping to coherent particle-hole pair motion between

Effects of acute lying and sleep deprivation on metabolic and inflammatory responses of lactating dairy cows
Dairy cows that are restricted from lying down have a reduced ability to sleep. In other species, sleep loss is a key risk factor for disease, mediated by changes in metabolic and inflammatory responses. The cumulative effect of lying and sleep deprivation on cow health is unknown. The objective was to determine the effects of lying and sleep deprivation on metabolic and inflammatory responses of dairy cows. Data were collected from 8 multiparous and 4 primiparous lactating cows (199 +/- 44 d in milk, 77 +/- 30 d pregnant; mean +/- standard deviation) enrolled in a study using a crossover design. Each cow was exposed to 2 treatments meant to induce sleep loss: (1) human disturbance (imposed by researchers making noise or physical contact when the cow's posture suggested sleep) and (2) lying deprivation (imposed by a wooden grid placed on the pen floor). Cows experienced a 24-h baseline period (d - 1) followed by a 24-h treatment period (d 0), with a 12-d washout period between treatments. Baseline and treatment periods were imposed from 2100 to 2059 h. Cows were housed in individual pens during the acclimation period (d - 3 and - 2), d - 1, and d 0. Nonesterified fatty acid and glucose concentrations were measured at 0300, 0900, 1500, and 2059 h on d - 1 and 0. Proinflammatory cytokine mRNA [tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-1B (IL1B), and interleukin-6 (IL6)] abundance in whole-blood leukocytes, both nonstimulated and stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, were assessed at 2059 h on d -1 (end of baseline) and d 0 (end of treatment). Nonesterified fatty acids and glucose varied by time of day but were not affected by treatment or day. The abundances of TNF and IL1B from both stimulated and nonstimulated cells were higher following 24 h of lying deprivation (d 0) compared with baseline (d -1). Abundance of IL6 was increased in nonstimulated cells after lying deprivation compared with baseline. In contrast, human disturbance for 24 h did not alter TNF, IL1B, or IL6 abundance relative to baseline levels. These results suggest that a short period of lying deprivation generally increases inflammatory responses but not metabolic responses.Peer reviewe
