    The construction and method of working of a helium adsorption pump are described. The flux of helium-2 film can be suppressed by an appropriate construction, which permits it to reach temperatures down to 0.71 K. By total utilization of the pump's cross-section, temperatures from 1.2 K to 0.71 K remain constant for several hours with a precision of 0.001 K

    Thermodynamic analysis of turbulent combustion in a spark ignition engine. Experimental evidence

    A method independent of physical modeling assumptions is presented to analyze high speed flame photography and cylinder pressure measurements from a transparent piston spark ignition research engine. The method involves defining characteristic quantities of the phenomena of flame propagation and combustion, and estimating their values from the experimental information. Using only the pressure information, the mass fraction curves are examined. An empirical burning law is presented which simulates such curves. Statistical data for the characteristics delay and burning angles which show that cycle to cycle fractional variations are of the same order of magnitude for both angles are discussed. The enflamed and burnt mass fractions are compared as are the rates of entrainment and burning

    The fungicide Maneb is a member of the family of dithiocarbamates that is used in the control of the fungal diseases of plants. The purpose of this work is to examine the effect of Maneb on implantation and thyroid activity at doses of 5, 10 and 50 mg/kg/day by gavage for 10 days in the domestic female rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus. The rabbits were sacrificed on the 11th day of pregnancy. The results indicate an increase in the body weight in the treated female. An increase is also observed in the weightof liver in the treated females with a darker color. There is 50% of inhibition of implantation in the group treated with the higher dose (50 mg/kg/day) when compared with control rabbit. The inhibition of implantation by Maneb may be to due to hormonal imbalance

    A Suzaku, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton view on variable absorption and relativistic reflection in NGC 4151

    We disentangle X-ray disk reflection from complex line-of-sight absorption in the nearby Seyfert NGC 4151, using a suite of Suzaku, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton observations. Extending upon earlier published work, we pursue a physically motivated model using the latest angle-resolved version of the lamp-post geometry reflection model relxillCp_lp together with a Comptonization continuum. We use the long-look simultaneous Suzaku/NuSTAR observation to develop a baseline model wherein we model reflected emission as a combination of lamp-post components at the heights of 1.2 and 15.0 gravitational radii. We argue for a vertically extended corona as opposed to two compact and distinct primary sources. We find two neutral absorbers (one full-covering and one partial-covering), an ionized absorber (logξ=2.8\log \xi = 2.8), and a highly-ionized ultra-fast outflow, which have all been reported previously. All analyzed spectra are well described by this baseline model. The bulk of the spectral variability between 1 keV and 6 keV can be accounted for by changes in the column density of both neutral absorbers, which appear to be degenerate and inversely correlated with the variable hard continuum component flux. We track variability in absorption on both short (2 d) and long (\sim1 yr) timescales; the observed evolution is either consistent with changes in the absorber structure (clumpy absorber at distances ranging from the broad line region (BLR) to the inner torus or a dusty radiatively driven wind) or a geometrically stable neutral absorber that becomes increasingly ionized at a rising flux level. The soft X-rays below 1 keV are dominated by photoionized emission from extended gas that may act as a warm mirror for the nuclear radiation.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication by A&

    Metamorphism of CO and CO-like chondrites and comparisons with type 3 ordinary chondrites

    In order to explore their metamorphic history, thermoluminescence data have been obtained for 10 CO or CO-related chondrites from the Antarctic. Six have TL properties indicating low to intermediate levels of metamorphism, while Lewis Cliff 85332 and three paired meteorites from MacAlpine Hills (87300,87301 and 88107) have unusual TL properties similar to those of the very primitive Colony and Allan Hills A77307 CO-related chondrites. Cathodoluminescence photomosaics of nine well-studied CO chondrites are also presented and compared with similar data for the type 3 ordinary chondrites in which CL properties vary systematically with metamorphism. It is concluded that the CO chondrites, like the ordinary chondrites, form a metamorphic sequence and may be subdivided in an analogous manner using TL, CL and other petrographic and compositional data. Definitions for CO chondrites of the petrologic types 3.0-3.9 are proposed. However, it is stressed that the thermal history of the CO and ordinary chondrites is quite different, the range of equilibration for the CO chondrites is similar to the ordinary chondrites, but the former have not experienced temperatures above those experienced by type 3.5 ordinary chondrites (probably around 600℃). Presumably the CO chondrites spent longer times at lower temperatures. A CL photomosaic of Murchison is also presented, which has two features in common with the type 3.0-3.1 CO and ordinary chondrites; type I chondrules whose mesostases produce yellow CL (due to an unidentified but highly metamorphism-sensitive phase) and fine-grained matrix with red CL due to forsterite. Haloes of matrix material around chondrules and other objects in Murchison are thought to be due to aqueous destruction of those objects, and Fezoning in olivines in chondrules with broad haloes is also throught to be due to aqueous processes
