    All-optical octave-broad ultrafast switching of Si woodpile photonic band gap crystals

    We present ultrafast all-optical switching measurements of Si woodpile photonic band gap crystals. The crystals are spatially homogeneously excited and probed by measuring reflectivity over an octave in frequency (including the telecommunication range) as a function of time. After 300 fs, the complete stop band has shifted to higher frequencies as a result of optically excited free carriers. The switched state relaxes quickly with a time constant of 18 ps. We present a quantitative analysis of switched spectra with theory for finite photonic crystals. The induced changes in refractive index are well described by a Drude model with a carrier relaxation time of 10 fs. We briefly discuss possible applications of high-repetition-rate switching of photonic crystal cavities

    Accurate evaluation of the interstitial KKR-Green function

    It is shown that the Brillouin zone integral for the interstitial KKR-Green function can be evaluated accurately by taking proper care of the free-electron singularities in the integrand. The proposed method combines two recently developed methods, a supermatrix method and a subtraction method. This combination appears to provide a major improvement compared with an earlier proposal based on the subtraction method only. By this the barrier preventing the study of important interstitial-like defects, such as an electromigrating atom halfway along its jump path, can be considered as being razed.Comment: 23 pages, RevTe

    Vortex trapping and expulsion in thin-film YBCO strips

    A scanning SQUID microscope was used to image vortex trapping as a function of the magnetic induction during cooling in thin-film YBCO strips for strip widths W from 2 to 50 um. We found that vortices were excluded from the strips when the induction Ba was below a critical induction Bc. We present a simple model for the vortex exclusion process which takes into account the vortex - antivortex pair production energy as well as the vortex Meissner and self-energies. This model predicts that the real density n of trapped vortices is given by n=(Ba-BK)/Phi0 with BK = 1.65Phi0/W^2 and Phi0 = h/2e the superconducting flux quantum. This prediction is in good agreement with our experiments on YBCO, as well as with previous experiments on thin-film strips of niobium. We also report on the positions of the trapped vortices. We found that at low densities the vortices were trapped in a single row near the centers of the strips, with the relative intervortex spacing distribution width decreasing as the vortex density increased, a sign of longitudinal ordering. The critical induction for two rows forming in the 35 um wide strip was (2.89 + 1.91-0.93)Bc, consistent with a numerical prediction

    Poverty and Wealth without a Ladder? An Appraisal of the Stages of Progress Method among Agro–Pastoralists in Ethiopia’s Lower Omo Valley

    Is it possible to measure wealth and poverty across settings while being faithful to local understandings? The stages of progress method (SoP) attempts to do this by building ladders of wealth in locally relevant terms and using these in comparisons across groups. This approach is potentially useful among pastoralist populations where monetary income and standard asset inventories may be misleading, and where people are discriminated against by the state and neglected by formal systems of accounting. On the basis of fieldwork among Nyangatom agro–pastoralists in Ethiopia, we expose some problematic assumptions of the SoP method. Participants did not endorse ladder-like stages from poverty to wealth distinguished by material assets, nor did they reach consensus on the definition of a poverty line. We caution that the SoP method carries risks of facipulation, and instead we advocate for multidimensional measures of prosperity based on locally relevant forms of wealth

    Dose-effect relations in time-limited combined psycho-pharmacological treatment for depression

    BACKGROUND: A limited number of psychotherapy sessions in combination with medication is preferable to pharmacotherapy only in the treatment of ambulatory patients with major depression. Whether there is a relation between the number of sessions and the efficacy of the treatment is uncertain. METHOD: Randomized clinical trial comparing two treatment conditions in outpatients with major depression. All patients studied had a baseline score of at least 14 points on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. The two conditions consist of 8-session or 16-session Short Psychodynamic Supportive Psychotherapy, both in combination with pharmacotherapy. Efficacy was assessed using the 17-item HDRS, the CGI of Severity and of Improvement, the depression subscale of the SCL-90 and the Quality of Life Depression Scale. RESULTS: The rate of change would seem to indicate that eight sessions are preferable for both moderately and severely depressed patients, although the results converged again at the end. Furthermore, in terms of satisfaction with the number of sessions and drop-out percentages during treatment, no differences were found between the conditions. CONCLUSION: In the light of the outcome analysis (faster remission after fewer sessions), a short version of the psychotherapy treatment in a combined course of treatment seems to be justifie

    Using functional annotations to study pairwise interactions in urinary tract infection communities

    The behaviour of microbial communities depends on environmental factors and on the interactions of the community members. This is also the case for urinary tract infection (UTI) microbial communities. Here, we devise a computational approach that uses indices of complementarity and competition based on metabolic gene annotation to rapidly predict putative interactions between pair of organisms with the aim to explain pairwise growth effects. We apply our method to 66 genomes selected from online databases, which belong to 6 genera representing members of UTI communities. This resulted in a selection of metabolic pathways with high correlation for each pairwise combination between a complementarity index and the experimentally derived growth data. Our results indicated that Enteroccus spp. were most complemented in its metabolism by the other members of the UTI community. This suggests that the growth of Enteroccus spp. can potentially be enhanced by complementary metabolites produced by other community members. We tested a few putative predicted interactions by experimental supplementation of the relevant predicted metabolites. As predicted by our method, folic acid supplementation led to the increase in the population density of UTI Enterococcus isolates. Overall, we believe our method is a rapid initial in silico screening for the prediction of metabolic interactions in microbial communities

    Islet cell cytoplasmic antibody reactivity in midgestational human fetal pancreas

    The reactivity of islet cell cytoplasmic antibodies (ICA)-positive and ICA-negative sera of recent onset type 1 diabetic patients was studied in human fetal pancreata of 12-18 weeks' gestation and compared with the reactivity of these sera in adult human control pancreata. The aims of the study were: (1) to observe the presence of ICA staining in human fetal islet cells; (2) to compare endpoint titres (in Juvenile Diabetes Foundation units) of ICA-positive patient sera in fetal pancreata and adult human control pancreata. Ten ICA-positive sera and eight ICA-negative sera from newly diagnosed diabetic patients and four sera from healthy controls were tested on three human adult and eight human fetal pancreata. As in the adult control pancreata. ICA-positive sera reacted to insulin-, glucagon-, and somatostatin-positive cells of fetal pancreata of all gestational ages. This was observed both in single cells and in cells in islet-like cell clusters. Dilution of a reference serum gave similar results in both adult and fetal pancreata. In contrast, the ICA-positive patient sera yielded a striking heterogeneity in fetal as well as in adult pancreata. However, end-point titres between adult and fetal pancreata did not differ significantly (P>0.05). In conclusion, ICA-positive sera from recent onset diabetic patients show that the expression of molecules to which ICA react is present in all islet cells and starts before week 12 of gestation

    Optimizing the Majorana character of SQUIDs with topologically non-trivial barriers

    We have modeled SQUIDs with topologically non-trivial superconducting junctions and performed an optimization study on the Majorana fermion detection. We find that the SQUID parameters beta_L, and beta_C can be used to increase the ratio of Majorana tunneling to standard Cooper pair tunneling by more than two orders of magnitude. Most importantly, we show that dc SQUIDs including topologically trivial components can still host strong signatures of the Majorana fermion. This paves the way towards the experimental verification of the theoretically predicted Majorana fermion.Comment: accepted by Physical Review
