    Parity violation in deuteron photo-disintegration

    We analyze the energy dependence for two types of parity-non-conserving (PNC) asymmetries in the reaction γDnp\gamma D\to np in the near-threshold region. The first one is the asymmetry in reaction with circularly polarized photon beam and unpolarized deuteron target. The second one corresponds to those with an unpolarized photon beam and polarized target. We find that the two asymmetries have quite different energy dependence, and their shapes are sensitive to the PNC-meson exchange coupling constants. The predictions for the future possible experiments to provide definite constraints for the PNC-coupling constants are discussed.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures. Submitted to Phys.Rev.C 10Oct.0

    An experiment for the measurement of the bound-beta decay of the free neutron

    The hyperfine-state population of hydrogen after the bound-beta decay of the neutron directly yields the neutrino left-handedness or a possible right-handed admixture and possible small scalar and tensor contributions to the weak force. Using the through-going beam tube of a high-flux reactor, a background free hydrogen rate of ca. 3 s1^{-1} can be obtained. The detection of the neutral hydrogen atoms and the analysis of the hyperfine states is accomplished by Lamb shift source type quenching and subsequent ionization. The constraints on the neutrino helicity and the scalar and tensor coupling constants of weak interaction can be improved by a factor of ten.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to EPJ

    Dependence of pp->pp pi0 near Threshold on the Spin of the Colliding Nucleons

    A polarized internal atomic hydrogen target and a stored, polarized beam are used to measure the spin-dependent total cross section Delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot, as well as the polar integrals of the spin correlation coefficient combination A_xx-A_yy, and the analyzing power A_y for pp-> pp pi0 at four bombarding energies between 325 and 400 MeV. This experiment is made possible by the use of a cooled beam in a storage ring.     Fibronectin Is More Active than Fibrin or Fibrinogen in Promoting Staphylococcus aureus Adherence to Inserted Intravascular Catheters

    To further define the role of fibrin(ogen) and fibronectin in Staphylococcus aureus adherence to central venous catheters, the amount, chemical integrity, and biologic activity of these proteins adsorbed on lines inserted in hospitalized patients were prospectively studied. Polyurethane cannulas promoted a significantly lower adherence of S. aureus than polyvinyl chloride (P < .01) or Hickman (P < .001) cannulas and contained the lowest amount of immunologically assayed fibronectin but not of fibrin(ogen). Fibrinogen showed an extensive loss of adherence-promoting activity on inserted cannulas, which was related to its proteolytic breakdown, as detected by SDS-PAGE and immunoblots with antifibrinogen antibodies and confirmed by in vitro studies with purified protein fragments. In contrast, either intact or fragmented fibronectin, although present in much lower amounts than fibrin(ogen), could actively promote S. aureus adherence onto intravenous catheter

    A measurement of parity-violating spin-dependent gamma proton Compton scattering will provide a theoretically clean determination of the parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant hπNN(1)h_{\pi NN}^{(1)}. We calculate the leading parity-violating amplitude arising from one-loop pion graphs in chiral perturbation theory.     Polarimeters were developed to measure the polarization of the proton beam at RHIC in relative scale through the asymmetry measurement of the elastic proton-carbon scattering. Recoil carbon ions with kinetic energy of 400 ≤ E ≤ 900 keV were detected by silicon strip detectors installed at 90° with respect to the beam. The absolute polarization is given by normalizing against another polarimeter implemented at RHIC, namely a polarized hydrogen gas jet polarimeter. In this report, the details of polarization measurements, data analysis, and systematic uncertainties are discussed based on the data taken during ∫s = 200 GeV operation of Run 05 at RHIC

    Anapole Moment and Other Constraints on the Strangeness Conserving Hadronic Weak Interaction

    Standard analyses of low-energy NN and nuclear parity-violating observables have been based on a pi-, rho-, and omega-exchange model capable of describing all five independent s-p partial waves. Here a parallel analysis is performed for the one-body, exchange-current, and nuclear polarization contributions to the anapole moments of 133Cs and 205Tl.
