Quantum Hall Ferromagnets: Induced Topological term and electromagnetic interactions

The ν=1\nu = 1 quantum Hall ground state in materials like GaAs is well known to be ferromagnetic in nature. The exchange part of the Coulomb interaction provides the necessary attractive force to align the electron spins spontaneously. The gapless Goldstone modes are the angular deviations of the magnetisation vector from its fixed ground state orientation. Furthermore, the system is known to support electrically charged spin skyrmion configurations. It has been claimed in the literature that these skyrmions are fermionic owing to an induced topological Hopf term in the effective action governing the Goldstone modes. However, objections have been raised against the method by which this term has been obtained from the microscopics of the system. In this article, we use the technique of the derivative expansion to derive, in an unambiguous manner, the effective action of the angular degrees of freedom, including the Hopf term. Furthermore, we have coupled perturbative electromagnetic fields to the microscopic fermionic system in order to study their effect on the spin excitations. We have obtained an elegant expression for the electromagnetic coupling of the angular variables describing these spin excitations.Comment: 23 pages, Plain TeX, no figure

X-ray pulsations from the radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar in CTA 1

Prompted by the Fermi LAT discovery of a radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar inside the CTA 1 supernova remnant, we obtained a 130 ks XMM-Newton observation to assess the timing behavior of this pulsar. Exploiting both the unprecedented photon harvest and the contemporary Fermi LAT timing measurements, a 4.7 sigma single peak pulsation is detected, making PSR J0007+7303 the second example, after Geminga, of a radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar also seen to pulsate in X-rays. Phase-resolved spectroscopy shows that the off-pulse portion of the light curve is dominated by a power-law, non-thermal spectrum, while the X-ray peak emission appears to be mainly of thermal origin, probably from a polar cap heated by magnetospheric return currents, pointing to a hot spot varying throughout the pulsar rotation.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. Observation of Mass Transport through Solid 4He

By use of a novel experimental design, one that provides for superfluid helium in contact with bulk hcp 4He off the melting curve, we have observed the DC transport of mass through a cell filled with solid 4He in the hcp region of the phase diagram. Flow, which shows characteristics of a superflow, is seen to be independent of the method used to grow the solid, but depends on pressure and temperature. The temperature dependence suggests the possibility of hysteresis.Comment: 1 zipped file, produces 16 page paper, with 20 figures; resubmitted with typos corrected, a figure corrected, some discussion improved, and additional references - still 16 pages and 20 figure

A Three Dimensional Lattice of Ion Traps

We propose an ion trap configuration such that individual traps can be stacked together in a three dimensional simple cubic arrangement. The isolated trap as well as the extended array of ion traps are characterized for different locations in the lattice, illustrating the robustness of the lattice of traps concept. Ease in the addressing of ions at each lattice site, individually or simultaneously, makes this system naturally suitable for a number of experiments. Application of this trap to precision spectroscopy, quantum information processing and the study of few particle interacting system are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Figures. Simultaneous X-ray and Radio Monitoring of the Unusual Binary LSI+61 303: Measurements of the Lightcurve and High-Energy Spectrum

The binary system, LSI+61 303, is unusual both because of the dramatic, periodic, radio outbursts, and because of its possible association with the 100 MeV gamma-ray source, 2CG135+01. We have performed simultaneous radio and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer X-ray observations at eleven intervals over the 26.5 day orbit, and in addition searched for variability on timescales ranging from milliseconds to hours. We confirm the modulation of the X-ray emission on orbital timescales originally reported by Taylor et al. (1996), and in addition we find a significant offset between the peak of the X-ray and radio flux. We argue that based on these results, the most likely X-ray emission mechanism is inverse Compton scattering of stellar photons off of electrons accelerated at the shock boundary between the relativistic wind of a young pulsar and the Be star wind. In these observations we also detected 2 -- 150 keV flux from the nearby low-redshift quasar QSO~0241+622. Comparing these measurements to previous hard X-ray and gamma-ray observations of the region containing both LSI+61 303 and QSO~0241+622, it is clear that emission from the QSO dominates.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

Vertical Crustal Motion Derived from Satellite Altimetry and Tide Gauges, and Comparisons with DORIS Measurements

    Get PDF
A somewhat unorthodox method for determining vertical crustal motion at a tide-gauge location is to difference the sea level time series with an equivalent time series determined from satellite altimetry, To the extent that both instruments measure an identical ocean signal, the difference will be dominated by vertical land motion at the gauge. We revisit this technique by analyzing sea level signals at 28 tide gauges that are colocated with DORIS geodetic stations. Comparisons of altimeter-gauge vertical rates with DORIS rates yield a median difference of 1.8 mm/yr and a weighted root-mean-square difference of2.7 mm/yr. The latter suggests that our uncertainty estimates, which are primarily based on an assumed AR(l) noise process in all time series, underestimates the true errors. Several sources of additional error are discussed, including possible scale errors in the terrestrial reference frame to which altimeter-gauge rates are mostly insensitive, One of our stations, Male, Maldives, which has been the subject of some uninformed arguments about sea-level rise, is found to have almost no vertical motion, and thus is vulnerable to rising sea levels.
