Search for the Radiative Capture d+d->^4He+\gamma Reaction from the dd\mu Muonic Molecule State
A search for the muon catalyzed fusion reaction dd --> ^4He +\gamma in the
dd\mu muonic molecule was performed using the experimental \mu CF installation
TRITON and NaI(Tl) detectors for \gamma-quanta. The high pressure target filled
with deuterium at temperatures from 85 K to 800 K was exposed to the negative
muon beam of the JINR phasotron to detect \gamma-quanta with energy 23.8 MeV.
The first experimental estimation for the yield of the radiative deuteron
capture from the dd\mu state J=1 was obtained at the level n_{\gamma}\leq
2\times 10^{-5} per one fusion.Comment: 9 pages, 3 Postscript figures, submitted to Phys. At. Nuc
The first result of the neutrino magnetic moment measurement in the GEMMA experiment
The first result of the neutrino magnetic moment measurement at the
Kalininskaya Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) with the GEMMA spectrometer is
presented. An antineutrino-electron scattering is investigated. A high-purity
germanium detector of 1.5 kg placed 13.9 m away from the 3 GW reactor core is
used in the spectrometer. The antineutrino flux is . The differential method is used to extract the -e
electromagnetic scattering events. The scattered electron spectra taken in 6200
and 2064 hours for the reactor ON and OFF periods are compared. The upper limit
for the neutrino magnetic moment Bohr magnetons
at 90{%} CL is derived from the data processing.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, 2 table
Localization of shadow poles by complex scaling
Through numerical examples we show that the complex scaling method is suited
to explore the pole structure in multichannel scattering problems. All poles
lying on the multisheeted Riemann energy surface, including shadow poles, can
be revealed and the Riemann sheets on which they reside can be identified.Comment: 6 pages, Latex with Revtex, 3 figures (not included) available on

Properties of Neutral Charmed Mesons in Proton--Nucleus Interactions at 70 GeV
The results of treatment of data obtained in the SERP-E-184experiment
"Investigation of mechanisms of the production of charmed particles in
proton-nucleus interactions at 70 GeV and their decays" by irradiating the
active target of the SVD-2 facility consisting of carbon, silicon, and lead
plates, are presented. After separating a signal from the two-particle decay of
neutral charmed mesons and estimating the cross section for charm production at
a threshold energy {\sigma}(c\v{c})=7.1 \pm 2.4(stat.) \pm 1.4(syst.)
\mub/nucleon, some properties of D mesons are investigated. These include the
dependence of the cross section on the target mass number (its A dependence);
the behavior of the differential cross sections d{\sigma}/dpt2 and
d{\sigma}/dxF; and the dependence of the parameter {\alpha} on the kinematical
variables xF, pt2, and plab. The experimental results in question are compared
with predictions obtained on the basis of the FRITIOF7.02 code.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures,3 table
Breast Cancer After Treatment of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer With Radioiodine in Young Females: What We Know and How to Investigate Open Questions. Review of the Literature and Results of a Multi-Registry Survey
Published studies on the risk of radiation-induced second primary malignancy (SPM) after radioiodine treatment (RAI) of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) refer mainly to patients treated as middle-aged or older adults and are not easily generalizable to those treated at a younger age. Here we review available literature on the risk of breast cancer as an SPM after RAI of DTC with a focus on females undergoing such treatment in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood. Additionally, we report the results of a preliminary international survey of patient registries from academic tertiary referral centers specializing in pediatric DTC. The survey sought to evaluate the availability of sufficient patient data for a potential international multicenter observational case–control study of females with DTC given RAI at an early age. Our literature review identified a bi-directional association of DTC and breast cancer. The general breast cancer risk in adult DTC survivors is low, ~2%, slightly higher in females than in males, but presumably lower, not higher, in those diagnosed as children or adolescents than in those diagnosed at older ages. RAI presumably does not substantially influence breast cancer risk after DTC. However, data from patients given RAI at young ages are sparse and insufficient to make definitive conclusions regarding age dependence of the risk of breast cancer as a SPM after RAI of DTC. The preliminary analysis of data from 10 thyroid cancer registries worldwide, including altogether 6,449 patients given RAI for DTC and 1,116 controls, i.e., patients not given RAI, did not show a significant increase of breast cancer incidence after RAI. However, the numbers of cases and controls were insufficient to draw statistically reliable conclusions, and the proportion of those receiving RAI at the earliest ages was too low.In conclusion, a potential international multicenter study of female patients undergoing RAI of DTC as children, adolescents, or young adults, with a sufficient sample size, is feasible. However, breast cancer screening of a larger cohort of DTC patients is not unproblematic for ethical reasons, due to the likely, at most slightly, increased risk of breast cancer post-RAI and the expected ~10% false-positivity rate which potentially produced substantial “misdiagnosis.
Muon capture by 3He nuclei followed by proton and deuteron production
The paper describes an experiment aimed at studying muon capture by
nuclei in pure and mixtures at various densities. Energy distributions of
protons and deuterons produced via and are measured for the
energy intervals MeV and MeV, respectively. Muon capture
rates, and are obtained using two different analysis methods. The
least--squares methods gives , . The Bayes theorem
gives ,
. The experimental
differential capture rates, and , are compared with theoretical
calculations performed using the plane--wave impulse approximation (PWIA) with
the realistic NN interaction Bonn B potential. Extrapolation to the full energy
range yields total proton and deuteron capture rates in good agreement with
former results.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Experimental study of nonlinear interaction of plasma flow with charged thin current sheets: 1. Boundary structure and motion
We study plasma transport at a thin magnetopause (MP), described hereafter as a thin current sheet (TCS), observed by Cluster at the southern cusp on 13 February 2001 around 20:01 UT. The Cluster observations generally agree with the predictions of the Gas Dynamic Convection Field (GDCF) model in the magnetosheath (MSH) up to the MSH boundary layer, where significant differences are seen. We find for the MP a normal roughly along the GSE x-axis, which implies a clear departure from the local average MP normal, a ~90 km thickness and an outward speed of 35 km/s. Two populations are identified in the MSH boundary layer: the first one roughly perpendicular to the MSH magnetic field, which we interpret as the "incident" MSH plasma, the second one mostly parallel to <b>B</b>. Just after the MP crossing a velocity jet is observed with a peak speed of 240 km/s, perpendicular to <b>B</b>, with <i>MA</i>=3 and β>10 (peak value 23). The magnetic field clock angle rotates by 70° across the MP. <i>Ex</i> is the main electric field component on both sides of the MP, displaying a bipolar signature, positive on the MSH side and negative on the opposite side, corresponding to a ~300 V electric potential jump across the TCS. The <i>E</i>×<i>B</i> velocity generally coincides with the perpendicular velocity measured by CIS; however, in the speed jet a difference between the two is observed, which suggests the need for an extra flow source. We propose that the MP TCS can act locally as an obstacle for low-energy ions (<350 eV), being transparent for ions with larger gyroradius. As a result, the penetration of plasma by finite gyroradius is considered as a possible source for the jet. The role of reconnection is briefly discussed. The electrodynamics of the TCS along with mass and momentum transfer across it are further discussed in the companion paper by Savin et al. (2006)
Observation of narrow baryon resonance decaying into in pA-interactions at with SVD-2 setup
SVD-2 experiment data have been analyzed to search for an exotic baryon
state, the -baryon, in a decay mode at on IHEP
accelerator. The reaction with a limited multiplicity was
used in the analysis. The invariant mass spectrum shows a resonant
structure with and . The statistical significance of this peak was estimated to be of . The mass and width of the resonance is compatible with the recently
reported - baryon with positive strangeness which was predicted as an
exotic pentaquark () baryon state. The total cross section for
production in pN-interactions for was estimated to be
and no essential deviation from A-dependence for inelastic
events was found.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, To be submitted to Yadernaya Fizika. v3-v5 - Some
