    A theoretical model of a new electrostatic transducer incorporating fluidic amplification

    This article concerns the design of a new electrostatic transducer whose backplate consists of a series of drilled pipes. A new one-dimensional model is derived which considers the interaction of the membrane with the air load, the air cavities, and the drilled pipes in the backplate. Dynamic equations for the impedance in each component of the device are calculated analytically and connected using interface conditions of continuity of pressure and radiation conditions into the air load. The model is able to produce solutions to the mechanical impedance of the device and the displacement of the membrane as a function of the device's design parameters. Model results for the output pressure compare well with previous experimental data. The inverse problem of retrieving the design parameters for a desired output is discussed

    Accelerated ageing and renal dysfunction links lower socioeconomic status and dietary phosphate intake

    Background: We have sought to explore the impact of dietary Pi intake on human age related health in the pSoBid cohort (n=666) to explain the disparity between health and deprivation status in this cohort. As hyperphosphataemia is a driver of accelerated ageing in rodent models of progeria we tested whether variation in Pi levels in man associate with measures of biological ageing and health. Results: We observed significant relationships between serum Pi levels and markers of biological age (telomere length (p=0.040) and DNA methylation content (p=0.028), gender and chronological age (p=0.032). When analyses were adjusted for socio-economic status and nutritional factors, associations were observed between accelerated biological ageing (telomere length, genomic methylation content) and dietary derived Pi levels among the most deprived males, directly related to the frequency of red meat consumption. Conclusions: Accelerated ageing is associated with high serum Pi levels and frequency of red meat consumption. Our data provide evidence for a mechanistic link between high intake of Pi and age-related morbidities tied to socio-economic status

    Sustainable degradation of carbon tetrafluoride to non-corrosive useful products by incorporating reduced electron mediator within electro-scrubbing

    The degradation of CF4 gas using existing technologies produces other types of greenhouse gas (CO2) and corrosive side products. The main aim of this study is to degrade CF4 gas at room temperature into useful products without producing corrosive side products by mediated electrochemical reduction (MER) process using an electrogenerated Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1− mediator. Initial studies on the electrolytic reduction of the hetero-bimetallic complex in catholyte solution at anodized Ti cathode was monitored by oxidation/reduction potential (ORP) variation whether the Cu2+ or Ni2+ was reduced in the Cu2+[Ni2+(CN)4] and confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy the Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1− formation. The concentration variation of Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1− during CF4 injection demonstrated the degradation of CF4 followed the MER by electrogenerated Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1−. Maximum removal efficiency of CF4 using electroscrubbing process was 96% at room temperature. Through the variation in gas phase parameters, the gas phase mass transfer coefficient was calculated that can facilitate scale up the developed process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis in both the gas and solution phases showed that CH3CH2OH was the main product that formed during the removal of CF4 by electrogenerated Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1− at electroscrubber along with a small amount of CF3CH3 intermediate. Importantly, this mechanism also avoided formation of the corrosive product HF

    Cosmology of Axions and Moduli: A Dynamical Systems Approach

    This paper is concerned with string cosmology and the dynamics of multiple scalar fields in potentials that can become negative, and their features as (Early) Dark Energy models. Our point of departure is the "String Axiverse", a scenario that motivates the existence of cosmologically light axion fields as a generic consequence of string theory. We couple such an axion to its corresponding modulus. We give a detailed presentation of the rich cosmology of such a model, ranging from the setting of initial conditions on the fields during inflation, to the asymptotic future. We present some simplifying assumptions based on the fixing of the axion decay constant faf_a, and on the effective field theory when the modulus trajectory is adiabatic, and find the conditions under which these assumptions break down. As a by-product of our analysis, we find that relaxing the assumption of fixed faf_a leads to the appearance of a new meta-stable de-Sitter region for the modulus without the need for uplifting by an additional constant. A dynamical systems analysis reveals the existence of many fixed point attractors, repellers and saddle points, which we analyse in detail. We also provide geometric interpretations of the phase space. The fixed points can be used to bound the couplings in the model. A systematic scan of certain regions of parameter space reveals that the future evolution of the universe in this model can be rich, containing multiple epochs of accelerated expansion.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, comments welcome, v2 minor correction

    Electrochemically generated bimetallic reductive mediator Cu1+ [Ni2+ (CN) 4] 1− for the degradation of CF4 to ethanol by electro-scrubbing

    Remediation of electronic gas CF4 using commercially available technologies results in another kind of greenhouse gas and corrosive side products. This investigation aimed to develop CF4 removal at room temperature with formation of useful product by attempting an electrogenerated Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1− mediator. The initial electrolysis of the bimetallic complex at the anodized Ti cathode demonstrated Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1− formation, which was confirmed by additional electron spin resonance results. The degradation of CF4 followed mediated electrochemical reduction by electrogenerated Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1−. The removal efficiency of CF4 of 95% was achieved by this electroscrubbing process at room temperature. The spectral results of online and offline Fourier transform infrared analyzer, either in gas or in solution phase, demonstrated that the product formed during the removal of CF4 by electrogenerated Cu1+[Ni2+(CN)4]1− by electroscrubbing was ethanol (CH3CH2OH), with a small amount of trifluoroethane (CF3CH3) intermediate

    A Late Miocene potential neobalaenine mandible from Argentina sheds light on the origins of the living pygmy right whale

    The origins and evolutionary relationships of the pygmy right whale (Caperea marginata),the only living member of the Neobalaeninae, have been the subject of a long-standing debate. This phylogenetic uncertainty is compounded by a limited neobalaenine fossil record. Here, we report a Late Miocene mysticete mandible from Patagonia, Argentina and provisionally refer it to Neobalaeninae, gen. et sp. indet. The new material represents only the third report of a fossil neobalaenine, and the first fossil occurrence of this lineage in the southwestern Atlantic. It is also the oldest specimen so far reported, thus corroborating the idea of an early divergence time for neobalaenines.Fil: Buono, Mónica Romina.     The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: morphological classification and bimodality in the colour-concentration plane

    Using 10 095 galaxies (B < 20 mag) from the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue, we derive B-band luminosity distributions and selected bivariate brightness distributions for the galaxy population. All subdivisions extract highly correlated sub-sets of the galaxy population which consistently point towards two overlapping distributions. A clear bimodality in the observed distribution is seen in both the rest-(u-r) colour and log(n) distributions. The rest-(u-r) colour bimodality becomes more pronounced when using the core colour as opposed to global colour. The two populations are extremely well separated in the colour-log(n) plane. Using our sample of 3 314 (B < 19 mag) eyeball classified galaxies, we show that the bulge-dominated, early-type galaxies populate one peak and the bulge-less, late-type galaxies occupy the second. The early- and mid-type spirals sprawl across and between the peaks. This constitutes extremely strong evidence that the fundamental way to divide the luminous galaxy population is into bulges and discs and that the galaxy bimodality reflects the two component nature of galaxies and not two distinct galaxy classes. We argue that these two-components require two independent formation mechanisms/processes and advocate early bulge formation through initial collapse and ongoing disc formation through splashback, infall and merging/accretion. We calculate the B-band luminosity-densities and stellar-mass densities within each subdivision and estimate that the z ~ 0 stellar mass content in spheroids, bulges and discs is 35 +/- 2 per cent, 18 +/- 7 and 47 +/- 7 per cent respectively.     The Deformable Mirror Demonstration Mission (DeMi) CubeSat: optomechanical design validation and laboratory calibration

    Coronagraphs on future space telescopes will require precise wavefront correction to detect Earth-like exoplanets near their host stars. High-actuator count microelectromechanical system (MEMS) deformable mirrors provide wavefront control with low size, weight, and power. The Deformable Mirror Demonstration Mission (DeMi) payload will demonstrate a 140 actuator MEMS deformable mirror (DM) with \SI{5.5}{\micro\meter} maximum stroke. We present the flight optomechanical design, lab tests of the flight wavefront sensor and wavefront reconstructor, and simulations of closed-loop control of wavefront aberrations. We also present the compact flight DM controller, capable of driving up to 192 actuator channels at 0-250V with 14-bit resolution. Two embedded Raspberry Pi 3 compute modules are used for task management and wavefront reconstruction.
