relA over-expression reduces tumorigenicity and activates apoptosis in human cancer cells
We previously demonstrated that bcl-2 over-expression increases the malignant behaviour of the MCF7 ADR human breast cancer cell line and enhances nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-k B) transcriptional activity. Here, we investigated the direct effect of increased NF-k B activity on the tumorigenicity of MCF7 ADR cells by over-expressing the NF-k B subunit relA/p65. Surprisingly, our results demonstrated that over-expression of relA determines a considerable reduction of the tumorigenic ability in nude mice as indicated by the tumour take and the median time of tumour appearance. In vitro studies also evidenced a reduced cell proliferation and the activation of the apoptotic programme after relA over-expression. Apoptosis was associated with the production of reactive oxygen species, and the cleavage of the specific substrate Poly-ADP-ribose-polymerrase. Our data indicate that there is no general role for NF-k B in the regulation of apoptosis and tumorigenicity. In fact, even though inhibiting NF-k B activity has been reported to be lethal to tumour cells, our findings clearly suggest that an over-induction of nuclear NF-k B activity may produce the same effect. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
Gradient catastrophe and flutter in vortex filament dynamics
Gradient catastrophe and flutter instability in the motion of vortex filament
within the localized induction approximation are analyzed. It is shown that the
origin if this phenomenon is in the gradient catastrophe for the dispersionless
Da Rios system which describes motion of filament with slow varying curvature
and torsion. Geometrically this catastrophe manifests as a rapid oscillation of
a filament curve in a point that resembles the flutter of airfoils.
Analytically it is the elliptic umbilic singularity in the terminology of the
catastrophe theory. It is demonstrated that its double scaling regularization
is governed by the Painlev\'e-I equation.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, typos corrected, references adde

Evaluation of chromosome microarray analysis in a large cohort of females with autism spectrum disorders: A single center Italian study
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) encompass a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders resulting from the complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Thanks to the chromosome microarray analysis (CMA) in clinical practice, the accurate identification and characterization of submicroscopic deletions/duplications (copy number variants, CNVs) associated with ASD was made possible. However, the widely acknowledged excess of males on the autism spectrum reflects on a paucity of CMA studies specifically focused on females with ASD (f-ASD). In this framework, we aim to evaluate the frequency of causative CNVs in a single-center cohort of idiopathic f-ASD. Among the 90 f-ASD analyzed, we found 20 patients with one or two potentially pathogenic CNVs, including those previously associated with ASD (located at 16p13.2 16p11.2, 15q11.2, and 22q11.21 regions). An exploratory genotype/phenotype analysis revealed that the f-ASD with causative CNVs had statistically significantly lower restrictive and repetitive behaviors than those without CNVs or with non-causative CNVs. Future work should focus on further understanding of f-ASD genetic underpinnings, taking advantage of next-generation sequencing technologies, with the ultimate goal of contributing to precision medicine in ASD
Population genomic, olfactory, dietary, and gut microbiota analyses demonstrate the unique evolutionary trajectory of feral pigs
Domestication is an intriguing evolutionary process. Many domestic populations are subjected to strong human-mediated selection, and when some individuals return to the wild, they are again subjected to selective forces associated with new environments. Generally, these feral populations evolve into something different from their wild predecessors and their members typically possess a combination of both wild and human selected traits. Feralisation can manifest in different forms on a spectrum from a wild to a domestic phenotype. This depends on how the rewilded domesticated populations can readapt to natural environments based on how much potential and flexibility the ancestral genome retains after its domestication signature. Whether feralisation leads to the evolution of new traits that do not exist in the wild or to convergence with wild forms, however, remains unclear. To address this question, we performed population genomic, olfactory, dietary, and gut microbiota analyses on different populations of Sus scrofa (wild boar, hybrid, feral and several domestic pig breeds). Porcine single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) analysis shows that the feral population represents a cluster distinctly separate from all others. Its members display signatures of past artificial selection, as demonstrated by values of FST in specific regions of the genome and bottleneck signature, such as the number and length of runs of homozygosity. Generalised FST values, reacquired olfactory abilities, diet, and gut microbiota variation show current responses to natural selection. Our results suggest that feral pigs are an independent evolutionary unit which can persist so long as levels of human intervention remain unchanged
Archaeometric approach for the study of mortars from the underwater archaeological site of Baia (Naples) Italy: Preliminary results
This work was aimed to evaluate the features of mortar samples taken from the underwater
archaeological area of Baia (Naples, Italy), an important site, where the remains of the
ancient Roman city of Baiae and Portus Iulius are submerged after bradyseism events, started
from 4th century AD. Several architectural structures are still preserved into the submerged
environment, such as: luxurious maritime villas, imperial buildings, private houses, thermae,
tabernae and warehouses. In particular, some samples were collected from the masonry walls
belonging to a building of the underwater area called Villa a Protiro. A first archaeometric
approach has been applied to analyse twelve archaeological mortars samples in order to define:
textural features, chemical composition and raw materials used for their production. For
this purpose different analytical methods were used, such as, polarizing optical microscope
(POM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS).This work was financially supported by
national national research project âCOMASâ
(Planned COnservation, âin situâ, of underwater
archaeological artifacts), funded by the Italian

Finite-gap Solutions of the Vortex Filament Equation: Isoperiodic Deformations
We study the topology of quasiperiodic solutions of the vortex filament
equation in a neighborhood of multiply covered circles. We construct these
solutions by means of a sequence of isoperiodic deformations, at each step of
which a real double point is "unpinched" to produce a new pair of branch points
and therefore a solution of higher genus. We prove that every step in this
process corresponds to a cabling operation on the previous curve, and we
provide a labelling scheme that matches the deformation data with the knot type
of the resulting filament.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures; submitted to Journal of Nonlinear Scienc
Hypersexuality as a tip of the iceberg of a primary psychopathology: a joined position statement of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine (SIAMS) and of the Italian Society of Psychopathology (SOPSI)
In the last years, hypersexual behavior has been broadly scientifically studied. The interest in this topic, belonging to psycho-sexology and sexual medicine, has been due to its still unclear aetiology, nature, and its manifestation in relationship with several organic and psychopathological conditions. So, the specialist (the psychologist, psychiatrist, endocrinologist, neurologist) may encounter some difficulties in diagnosing and managing this symptom. The first main objective of this position statement, which has been developed in collaboration between the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine (SIAMS) and the Italian Society of Psychopathology (SOPSI) is to give to the reader evidence about the necessity to consider hypersexuality as a symptom related to another underlying condition. Following this consideration, the second main objective is to give specific statements, for the biopsychosocial assessment and the diagnosis of hypersexual behavior, developed on the basis of the most recent literature evidence. To develop a psycho-pharmacological treatment tailored on patientsâ needs, our suggestion is to assess the presence of specific comorbid psychopathological and organic conditions, and the impact of pharmacological treatments on the presence of an excess of sexual behavior. Finally, a suggestion of a standardized psychometric evaluation of hypersexuality will be given
