    The Nusselt numbers of horizontal convection

    We consider the problem of horizontal convection in which non-uniform buoyancy, bs(x,y)b_{\rm s}(x,y), is imposed on the top surface of a container and all other surfaces are insulating. Horizontal convection produces a net horizontal flux of buoyancy, J\mathbf{J}, defined by vertically and temporally averaging the interior horizontal flux of buoyancy. We show that Jbs=κb2\overline{\mathbf{J}\cdot\mathbf{\nabla}b_{\rm s}}=-\kappa\langle|\boldsymbol{\nabla}b|^2\rangle; overbar denotes a space-time average over the top surface, angle brackets denote a volume-time average and κ\kappa is the molecular diffusivity of buoyancy bb. This connection between J\mathbf{J} and κb2\kappa\langle|\boldsymbol{\nabla}b|^2\rangle justifies the definition of the horizontal-convective Nusselt number, NuNu, as the ratio of κb2\kappa \langle|\boldsymbol{\nabla}b|^2\rangle to the corresponding quantity produced by molecular diffusion alone. We discuss the advantages of this definition of NuNu over other definitions of horizontal-convective Nusselt number currently in use. We investigate transient effects and show that κb2\kappa \langle|\boldsymbol{\nabla}b|^2\rangle equilibrates more rapidly than other global averages, such as the domain averaged kinetic energy and bottom buoyancy. We show that κb2\kappa\langle|\boldsymbol{\nabla} b|^2\rangle is essentially the volume-averaged rate of Boussinesq entropy production within the enclosure. In statistical steady state, the interior entropy production is balanced by a flux of entropy through the top surface. This leads to an equivalent "surface Nusselt number", defined as the surface average of vertical buoyancy flux through the top surface times the imposed surface buoyancy bs(x,y)b_{\rm s}(x,y). In experiments it is likely easier to evaluate the surface entropy flux, rather than the volume integral of b2|\mathbf{\nabla}b|^2 demanded by κb2\kappa\langle|\mathbf{\nabla}b|^2\rangle.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    Synthesis, Regulation and Degradation of Carotenoids Under Low Level UV-B Radiation in the Filamentous Cyanobacterium Chlorogloeopsis fritschii PCC 6912

    Carotenoids in cyanobacteria play an important role in protecting against and in repairing damage against low level UV-B radiation. Here we use transcriptomics and metabolomic HPLC pigment analysis to compare carotenoid pathway regulation in the filamentous cyanobacterium Chlorogloeopsis fritschii PCC 6912 exposed to white light and to white light supplemented with low level UV-B. Under UV-B changes in carotenoid transcription regulation were found associated with carotenogenesis (carotenoid synthesis), photoprotection and carotenoid cleavage. Transcriptional regulation was reflected in corresponding pigment signatures. All carotenogenesis pathway genes from geranylgeranyl-diphosphate to lycopene were upregulated. There were significant increases in expression of gene homologs (crtW, crtR, cruF, and cruG) associated with routes to ketolation to produce significant increases in echinenone and canthaxanthin concentrations. There were gene homologs for four β-carotene-ketolases (crtO and crtW) present but only one crtW was upregulated. Putative genes encoding enzymes (CruF, CrtR, and CruG) for the conversion of γ-carotene to myxol 2′-methylpentoside were upregulated. The hydroxylation pathway to nostaxanthin via zeaxanthin and caloxanthin (gene homologs for CrtR and CrtG) were not upregulated, reflected in the unchanged corresponding pigment concentrations in zeaxanthin, caloxanthin and nostaxanthin, Transcripts for the non-photochemical quenching related Orange-Carotenoid-Protein (OCP) and associated Fluoresence-Recovery-Protein (FRP) associated with photoprotection were upregulated, and one carotenoid binding Helical-Carotenoid-Protein (HCP) gene homolog was downregulated. Multiple copies of genes encoding putative apocarotenoid related carotenoid oxygenases responsible for carotenoid cleavage were identified, including an upregulated apo-β-carotenal-oxygenase gene homologous to a retinal producing enzyme. Our study provides holistic insight into the photoregulatory processes that modulate the synthesis, photoprotection and cleavage of carotenoids in cyanobacterial cells exposed to low level UV-B. This is important to understanding how regulation of metabolism responds to a changing environment and how metabolism can be modulated for biotechnological purposes

    Genetic variation of the dopamine D2 receptor gene: association with the reinforcing value of food and eating in the absence of hunger in Chilean children

    BACKGROUND: food is a powerful reinforcer that motivates people to eat. The TaqI A1 polymorphism (rs1800497; T>C) downstream of the dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) gene has been associated with diminished DRD2 receptor density, higher food reinforcement, and impaired eating behavior in adults. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the association between the rs1800497 polymorphism and the reinforcing value of food and eating in the absence of hunger in Chilean children. MATERIAL AND METHOD: nineteen Chilean children (aged 8-12 years) who were carriers of the A1-allele and 19 age- and gender-matched non-carriers (A2-allele) were evaluated on the reinforcing value of food and eating in the absence of hunger. Anthropometric measures were performed by standard procedures. Briefly, children received a standard pre-load lunch followed by an ad-libitum exposure to palatable foods. RESULTS: no differences were found between A1-allele carriers and non-carriers, whether obese or non-obese, in ad libitum energy intake, macronutrient consumption, or the relative reinforcing value of food (p > 0.05). In obese children, A1 carriers reported significantly lower satiety and fullness before lunch (p < 0.05). However, in children with normal weight A1 carriers were found to exhibit trends for greater satiety and fullness before lunch when compared to non-carriers, but this trend reversed after lunch such that carriers exhibited lower satiety and fullness (p = 0.06). CONCLUSIONS: although TaqI A1 may play an important role in some eating behavior-related traits such as satiety and fullness, especially in obese children, our findings indicate that this polymorphism does not appear to affect eating in the absence of hunger or food reinforcement in children

    Gettering of Pd to implantation-induced nanocavities in Si

    The gettering of Pd to nanocavities in Si for implantation doses ranging from 5×10¹³ to 1×10¹⁵ cm¯² and annealing temperatures ranging from 750 to 1050 °C was investigated using Rutherford backscattering and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. For a given annealing temperature, the gettering efficiency increased as the dose decreased. For a given dose, maximum gettering efficiency was achieved at the intermediate temperatures studied. Competition between silicide formation and nanocavity gettering limited gettering efficiency.The authors thank the Australian Research Council for their financial support.     Meta-Analysis of Memory and Executive Dysfunctions in Relation to Vitamin D

    Background: Hypovitaminosis D is associated with global cognitive impairment in adults. It remains unclear which domain-specific cognitive functions are affected with hypovitaminosis D.Objective: To systematically review and quantitatively synthesize the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations with episodic memory and executive functions in adults. Methods: A Medline and PsycINFO (R) libraries search was conducted on May 2012, with no limit of date, using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms "Vitamin D" OR "Hydroxycholecalciferols" combined with the MeSH terms "Memory" OR "Memory Disorders" OR "Executive Function" OR "Attention" OR "Cognition" OR "Cognition disorders" OR "Dementia" OR "Alzheimer disease" OR "Neuropsychological Tests". Fixed-effects meta-analysis was performed from 12 eligible studies using an inverse-variance method. Results: Of the 285 selected studies, 14 observational studies (including 3 prospective cohort studies) and 3 interventional studies met the selection criteria. All were of good quality. The number of participants ranged from 44-5,692 community-dwellers (0-100% women). In the pooled analysis, although episodic memory disorders showed only modest association with lower 25OHD concentrations (summary effect size of the difference (ES) =-0.09 [95% CI:-0.16;-0.03]), associations of greater magnitude were found with executive dysfunctions (processing speed: mean difference of Trail Making Test (TMT)-A score = 4.0 [95% CI: 1.20;6.83]; mental shifting: mean difference of TMT-B score = 12.47 [95% CI: 6.78; 18.16]; information updating tests: ES =-0.31 [95% CI:-0.5;-0.09]). The pooled risk of incident decline of TMT-B score was OR = 1.25 [95% CI: 1.05; 1.48] in case of initial lower 25OHD concentrations. Vitamin D repletion resulted in improved executive functions (ES =-0.50 [95% CI:-0.69;-0.32] for before-and-after comparison), but exhibited no difference with control groups (ES = 0.14 [95% CI:-0.04; 0.32] for between-group comparison after intervention). Conclusion: Lower serum 25OHD concentrations predict executive dysfunctions, especially on mental shifting, information updating and processing speed. The association with episodic memory remains uncertain

    Home sampling for sexually transmitted infections and HIV in men who have sex with men: A prospective observational study

    To determine uptake of home sampling kit (HSK) for STI/HIV compared to clinic-based testing, whether the availability of HSK would increase STI testing rates amongst HIV infected MSM, and those attending a community-based HIV testing clinic compared to historical control. Prospective observational study in three facilities providing STI/HIV testing services in Brighton, UK was conducted. Adult MSM attending/contacting a GUM clinic requesting an STI screen (group 1), HIV infectedMSM attending routine outpatient clinic (group 2), and MSM attending a community-based rapid HIV testing service (group 3) were eligible. Participants were required to have no symptomatology consistent with STI and known to be immune to hepatitis A and B (group 1). Eligiblemen were offered a HSK to obtain self-collected specimens as an alternative to routine testing. HSK uptake compared to conventional clinicbased STI/HIV testing in group 1, increase in STI testing rates due to availability of HSK compared to historical controls in group 2 and 3, and HSK return rates in all settings were calculated. Among the 128 eligible men in group 1, HSK acceptance was higher (62.5% (95%CI: 53.5-70.9)) compared to GUM clinic-based testing (37.5% (95% CI: 29.1-46.5)), (p = 0.0004). Two thirds of eligibleMSM offered an HSK in all three groups accepted it, but HSK return rates varied (highest in group 1, 77.5%, lowest in group 3, 16%). HSK for HIV testing was acceptable to 81%of men in group 1. Compared to historical controls, availability of HSK increased the proportion ofMSM testing for STIs in group 2 but not in group 3. HSK for STI/ HIV offers an alternative to conventional clinic-based testing for MSM seeking STI screening. It significantly increases STI testing uptake in HIV infected MSM. HSK could be considered as an adjunct to clinic-based services to further improve STI/HIV testing in MSM

    UCL Qualitative health research symposium 2017: collaboration in qualitative health research

    In recent years, there have been increasing calls for collaboration between academia and the wider healthcare community in health research. This is largely driven by efforts to engage the public in the “co-production” of evidence-based healthcare and healthcare decision-making, as well as penetrate borders between disciplines. As a result, traditional "lone researcher" models of qualitative health research have shifted to include research teams which are increasingly made up of qualitative researchers alongside quantitative researchers, members of the public, health professionals, policy-makers and other stakeholders. In these ways, health research is assumed to be more relevant, ethically justifiable, and broadly applicable. However, such collaborations may be complex and may create challenges. To date, there has been limited critical consideration of these challenges and little is known about the assumptions and effectiveness of these collaborations. We organised a one-day symposium to explore themes related to engagement, co-production and collaborative meaning making in qualitative health research. The oral presentations and posters used examples of collaborative studies to critically explore the processes used to carry out research as a diverse team. The discussions throughout the day alluded to the need to understand the multiple forms and levels of patient and public involvement in research, and distinguish between patient representatives and members of the public. Collaborative research requires flexibility, and might lead the researcher to occupy “mediating” roles such as that of the “cultural broker” or “boundary spanner”. The symposium created a forum to critically reflect on current approaches to inform improved ways of collaborating and engaging with diverse stakeholders to meaningfully impact on health and healthcare delivery. We should continue to search for ways to unpack the concept of “collaboration” to identify the purpose of collaborative relationships, the required activities and the actors involved
