    High-order harmonic generation driven by chirped laser pulses induced by linear and non linear phenomena

    We present a theoretical study of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) driven by ultrashort optical pulses with different kind of chirps. The goal of the present work is perform a detailed study to clarify the relevant parameters in the chirped pulses to achieve a noticeable cut-off extensions in HHG. These chirped pulses are generated using both linear and nonlinear dispersive media.The description of the origin of the physical mechanisms responsible of this extension is, however, not usually reported with enough detail in the literature. The study of the behaviour of the harmonic cut-off with these kind of pulses is carried out in the classical context, by the integration of the Newton-Lorentz equation complemented with the quantum approach, based on the integration of the time dependent Schr\"odinger equation in full dimensions (TDSE-3D), we are able to understand the underlying physics.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

    Simple interferometric setup enabling sub-Fourier-scale ultra-short laser pulses

    In this work, we have developed a method to generate ultra-short pulses below the Fourier limit, extending the concept previously worked in reference 1 for generating sub-diffractive Gaussian beams. Alternatively, we introduce new alternatives based on a temporally non-symmetrical interference to narrow ultrashort pulses allowing, sub-Fourier scales. The experimental setup scheme is simple and versatile being able to work with high-power laser sources and ultra-short pulses with a broad bandwidth at any central wavelength. The results presented, are promising and help to enlighten new routes and strategies in the design of coherent control systems. We glimpse they will become broadly useful in different fields from strong field domain to quantum information

    Anisotropic lattice changes in femtosecond laser inscribed Nd3+:MgO:LiNbO3 optical waveguides

    We report on the fabrication and microspectroscopy imaging of femtosecond laser written double-filament based Nd3+ :MgO:LiNbO3 optical waveguides. The waveguiding high refractive-index regions are identified by blueshifts of the Nd3+ ion fluorescence lines with no deterioration in the fluorescence efficiency, whereas filamentary low-index regions are identified by both a Nd3+ line redshift and a fluorescence efficiency reduction. The lattice structural micromodifications at the origin of both waveguide formation and Nd3+ fluorescence changes have been investigated by means of confocal micro-Raman experiments. We have found that the direct laser written filaments are mainly constituted by a large density of defects, together with a marked axial compression perpendicular to the filaments �along the optical c-axis�. Conversely, the high-index waveguiding regions are characterized by a pronounced anisotropic dilatation of the LiNbO3 lattice xy-planes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Complex chromosome rearrangements (CCRs), which involve more than two breakpoints on two or more chromosomes, are uncommon occurrences. Although most CCRs appear balanced at the level of the light microscope, many demonstrate cryptic, submicroscopic imbalances at the translocation breakpoints.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report a female with hearing loss and global developmental delay with a complex three-way unbalanced translocation (5;20;8)(q31;p11.2;p21) resulting in microdeletions on 5q31.2, 5q31.3, and 8p23.2 identified by karyotyping, microarray analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The microdeletion of bands 8p23.2 may be associated with the hearing impairment. Furthermore, the characterization of this patient's chromosomal abnormalities demonstrates the importance of integrated technologies within contemporary cytogenetics laboratories.</p

    Microdeletion of 6q16.1 encompassing EPHA7 in a child with mild neurological abnormalities and dysmorphic features: case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Of the fewer than 100 cases reported within the literature of constitutional deletions involving the long arm of chromosome 6, only five have been characterized using high-resolution microarray analysis. Reported 6q deletion patients show a high incidence of mental retardation, ear anomalies, hypotonia, and postnatal growth retardation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report a 16-month-old male presenting with developmental delay and dysmorphic features who was found by array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) to have a ~2.16 Mb <it>de novo </it>deletion within chromosome band 6q16.1 that encompasses only two genes. Expression studies of the mouse homologue of one of the genes, the ephrin receptor 7 gene (<it>EPHA7</it>), have shown the gene functions during murine embryogenesis to form cortical domains, determine brain size and shape, and play a role in development of the central nervous system (CNS).</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Our results suggest that deletion of <it>EPHA7 </it>plays a role in the neurologic and dysmorphic features, including developmental delay, hypotonia, and ear malformations, observed in some 6q deletion patients.</p

    Photoacoustic characterization of transient defects in potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals

    Transient defects in potassium dihydrogen phosphate Í‘KDPÍ’ were characterized by using the acoustic signals generated in the crystal when it is impinged with pulsed laser radiation. These defects are produced by simultaneous absorption of two Ï­266 nm photons and they show linear absorption in the visible and UV spectral region. The decay kinetics of the defects has been studied by a new method based on the analysis of the acoustic signal generated by visible pulses. The acoustic measurement of the decay time shows a nonexponential decay and it is free from thermal lensing or beam deformation by other causes, effects that can alter the pure optical measurements. We propose that the origin of the photoacoustic signal is the heat released by the deexcitation of the energy levels of the defects when they are excited by visible pulses. This mechanism, optical absorption and nonradiative relaxation of defects, could be the reason for some depletion in the yield of several devices based on KDP. This phenomena must be carefully taken in account, when KDP crystals are used in combination with Nd:YAG Í‘YAG, yttrium aluminum garnetÍ’ lasers for second-harmonic generation from Ï­532 nm to Ï­266 nm

    A large ongoing outbreak of hepatitis A predominantly affecting young males in Lazio, Italy; August 2016 - March 2017

    The hepatitis A virus (HAV) is mainly transmitted through the faecal-oral route. In industrialized countries HAV infection generally occurs as either sporadic cases in travelers from endemic areas, local outbreak within closed/semi-closed population and as foodborne community outbreak. Recently, an increasing number of HAV infection clusters have been reported among young men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM). The Lazio Regional Service for the epidemiology and control for infectious diseases (SeRESMI) has noticed an increase of acute hepatitis A (AHA) since September 2016. Temporal analysis carried out with a discrete Poisson model using surveillance data between January 2016 and March 2017 evidenced an ongoing outbreak of AHA that started at the end of August. Molecular investigation carried out on 130 out of 513 cases AHA reported until March 2017 suggests that this outbreak is mainly supported by an HAV variant which is currently spreading within MSM communities across Europe (VRD_521_2016). The report confirms that AHA is an emerging issue among MSM. In addition through the integration of standard (case based) surveillance with molecular investigation we could discriminate, temporally concomitant but epidemiologically unrelated, clusters due to different HAV variants. As suggested by the WHO, in countries with low HAV circulation, vaccination programmes should be tailored on the local epidemiological patterns to prevent outbreaks among high risk groups and eventual spillover of the infection in the general population
