    Boussinesq Solitary-Wave as a Multiple-Time Solution of the Korteweg-de Vries Hierarchy

    We study the Boussinesq equation from the point of view of a multiple-time reductive perturbation method. As a consequence of the elimination of the secular producing terms through the use of the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy, we show that the solitary--wave of the Boussinesq equation is a solitary--wave satisfying simultaneously all equations of the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy, each one in an appropriate slow time variable.Comment: 12 pages, RevTex (to appear in J.     Closing the SU(3)LU(1)XSU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X Symmetry at Electroweak Scale

    We show that some models with SU(3)CSU(3)LU(1)XSU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X gauge symmetry can be realized at the electroweak scale and that this is a consequence of an approximate global SU(2)L+RSU(2)_{L+R} symmetry. This symmetry implies a condition among the vacuum expectation value of one of the neutral Higgs scalars, the U(1)XU(1)_X's coupling constant, gXg_X, the sine of the weak mixing angle sinθW\sin\theta_W, and the mass of the WW boson, MWM_W. In the limit in which this symmetry is valid it avoids the tree level mixing of the ZZ boson of the Standard Model with the extra ZZ^\prime boson. We have verified that the oblique TT parameter is within the allowed range indicating that the radiative corrections that induce such a mixing at the 1-loop level are small. We also show that a SU(3)L+RSU(3)_{L+R} custodial symmetry implies that in some of the models we have to include sterile (singlets of the 3-3-1 symmetry) right-handed neutrinos with Majorana masses, being the see-saw mechanism mandatory to obtain light active neutrinos. Moreover, the approximate SU(2)L+RSU(3)L+RSU(2)_{L+R}\subset SU(3)_{L+R} symmetry implies that the extra non-standard particles of these 3-3-1 models can be considerably lighter than it had been thought before so that new physics can be really just around the corner.Comment: 32 pages, no figure, RevTeX.     On fermion masses and mixing in a model with A4A_4 symmetry

    In a recently proposed multi-Higgs extension of the standard model in which discrete symmetries, A4A_4 and Z3Z_3 are imposed we show that, after accommodating the fermion masses and the mixing matrices in the charged currents, the mixing matrices in the neutral currents induced by neutral scalars are numerically obtained. However, the flavor changing neutral currents are under control mainly by mixing and/or mass suppressions in the neutral scalar sector.Comment: Version accepted for publication in International Journal of Modern Physics A.     Efecto de la fertilización sobre la producción de un fruto forestal comestible: el piñón de pino piñonero (Pinus pinea L.) en Andalucía Occidental

    The pine nut from the stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) is the most important edible fruit in mediterranean forests. Despite this fact, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the application of agronomy techniques in stands of this species to increase pine nut production. Our study focuses on the effect of mineral fertilization on cone production and size, which in turn, are closely related to nut yield and quality. Cone production and quality was analysed in a randomized experiment installed in south west Spain, comparing the effect of different doses of lime superphosphate, dolomite and potassium. A significant short term increase in cone production and quality exists as a consequence of fertilization, especially in those treatments involving the addition of larger quantity of dolomite. Nevertheless, effect of mineral fertilization on cone yield and quality was lower than expected, so further increments might be achieved through nitrogenous and organic fertilizations to improve soil structure in these sandy soils.El piñón de Pinus pinea L. es el fruto forestal comestible más importante en los bosques mediterráneos. Pese a esto, existe una falta de conocimiento científico acerca de la aplicación de prácticas agronómicas sobre las masas forestales de la especie al objeto de mejorar la producción de piñón. Nuestro trabajo se centra en el análisis del efecto de la fertilización mineral sobre la producción y el tamaño de las piñas, variables muy relacionadas con la cantidad y calidad de piñón. Entre 1993-1999 se realizó el seguimiento de la producción y la calidad de la piña en un experimente aleatorizado instalado en el SO de España, donde se comparaban diferentes dosis de superfosfato de cal, dolomita y cloruro potásico. Se ha detectado una respuesta positiva a la fertilización en la cantidad y calidad de las piñas producidas, especialmente en los tratamientos que planteaban la incorporación de una mayor cantidad de dolomita. El efecto de la fertilización mineral sobre la cantidad y calidad de piña ha sido menor que el esperado, por lo que futuros trabajos deben plantear la necesidad de incorporar fertilizantes nitrogenados y materia orgánica para mejorar la estructura en estos suelos arenosos

    A semi-analytical perspective on massive galaxies at z0.55z\sim0.55

    The most massive and luminous galaxies in the Universe serve as powerful probes to study the formation of structure, the assembly of mass, and cosmology. However, their detailed formation and evolution is still barely understood. Here we extract a sample of massive mock galaxies from the semi-analytical model of galaxy formation (SAM) GALACTICUS from the MultiDark-Galaxies, by replicating the CMASS photometric selection from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The comparison of the GALACTICUS CMASS-mock with BOSS-CMASS data allows us to explore different aspects of the massive galaxy population at 0.5<z<0.60.5<z<0.6, including the galaxy-halo connection and the galaxy clustering. We find good agreement between our modelled galaxies and observations regarding the galaxy-halo connection, but our CMASS-mock over-estimates the clustering amplitude of the 2-point correlation function, due to a smaller number density compared to BOSS, a lack of blue objects, and a small intrinsic scatter in stellar mass at fixed halo mass of <0.1<0.1 dex. To alleviate this problem, we construct an alternative mock catalogue mimicking the CMASS colour-magnitude distribution by randomly down-sampling the SAM catalogue. This CMASS-mock reproduces the clustering of CMASS galaxies within 1σ\sigma and shows some environmental dependency of star formation properties that could be connected to the quenching of star formation and the assembly bias.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, submitted to MNRA

    The Continuous-Time Random Walk (CTRW) formalism can be adapted to encompass stochastic processes with memory. In this article we will show how the random combination of two different unbiased CTRWs can give raise to a process with clear drift, if one of them is a CTRW with memory. If one identifies the other one as noise, the effect can be thought as a kind of stochastic resonance.     We compare the thickness of shock wave fronts at different Mach numbers, modeled via Navier-Stokes (NS) and Quasi-gasdynamic (QGD) equations, with experimental results from the literature. Monoatomic argon and helium, and diatomic nitrogen, are considered. In this modeling a finite-difference scheme with second-order spatial accuracy is employed. For argon the density thickness calculated via QGD and NS models are in good agreement with each other, and with the experimental results. For helium QGD and NS results agree well with those from the bimodal model. For nitrogen, the QGD results are closer to the experimental data than NS results. The QGD-based algorithm converges to the steady state solution faster than the NS-based one.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
