    Relationship-Specificity, Spatial Clustering and Production to Order Choice

    We study the determinants of the firm-level choice to produce following an order placed by a downstream firm (production to order) or to produce in advance. We rationalize this choice through a simple theoretical model and apply it to a firm-level empirical analysis. Relying on a large dataset of Italian manufacturing firms, we show that two main variables affect this choice: the extent of spatial clustering of the industry, and the degree of product complexity and relationship-specificity of the goods that are traded. The sign of the impact of clustering on the choice of producing to order crucially depends on product complexity. If product complexity is high, production to order prevails when firms are clustered together. On the contrary, clustering is associated to production in advance for sectors where goods are standardized.

    Explaining the Size Distribution of Plants: An Approach Based on Civic Capital

    We show that the distribution of plant size within narrowly defined industries is affected by the variation in the stock of civic capital that occurs at the provincial level. Data on plant size come from the 2001 Italian Census of Manufacturing and Services. Civic capital turns out to have a positive effect on both the average and the standard deviation of the plant size distribution. This effect is stronger in labor-intensive industries. The potential endogeneity of current civic capital is addressed by instrumenting it with historical variables. Our interpretation for these results is that civic capital is associated with reduced opportunistic behavior, which improves intra-firm cooperation and hampers the incidence of principal-agent problems, thus allowing plants to operate on a larger scale.

    Foreign ownership, firm performance, and the geography of civic capital

    It is well established in the literature that foreign affiliates are subject to a series of governance and assimilation costs that deteriorate their performance. This is particularly relevant for firms which have been recently acquired by foreign investors. We employ the variation in civic capital across Italian provinces as an exogenous determinant of these governance costs. We derive the testable implication that there should be a clean evidence of a negative effect of foreign ownership on performance in areas where civic capital is low. As the level of local civic capital increases, this reduces the scope for internal transaction costs, and makes the governance of foreign affiliates easier, and their performance better. We take this prediction to the data and find confirmation of our conceptual framework. Our analysis underlines the importance of the geographic heterogeneity of informal institutions when analyzing the effect of foreign ownership on firm performance.

    Simulation of Chlorine Decay in Water Distribution Networks Using EPANET – Case Study

    Deterioration of water quality in distribution networks has a great impact on human health and public acceptance of tap water reaching them. Residual chlorine should be maintained through network pipes to prevent contamination and microbial regrowth. This paper investigates the ability of EPANET 2.0, a free software developed by United States Environment Protection Agency (USEPA), to simulate residual chlorine decay through water networks, taking water-age analyses into consideration, and assesses the feasibility of using it as a measuring and controlling tool to estimate and predict chlorine concentration at different water network points. A study was performed on drinking water network of 6th of October city, where field measurements were done, while data required as program inputs were taken from the daily records of the 6th of October and El-Shaikh Zayed WTPs. The network model was calibrated to minimize error in program results. Errors were evaluated using statistical analyses. The calculated concentrations by the calibrated model were very close to the actual concentrations measured in field at different sampling points for different sampling days. Moreover, EPANET showed that for the water network concerned in this study, chlorine concentrations at network extremities did not recede 0.5 mg/l, the minimum allowable limit established in the Egyptian Code of Practice (ECP), even for those points having water age greater than 24 hours.     Exploring Relationships between Demersal Resources and Environmental Factors in the Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean)

    The relationships between the abundance of demersal resources, environmental variables, and fishing pressure in the north-western Ionian Sea in the last two decades were evaluated. Data on the density collected during seventeen trawl surveys carried out from 1985 to 2005 were used. The following species were considered:Aristaeomorpha foliacea, Nephrops norvegicus,andParapenaeus longirostrisfor crustaceans;Merluccius merluccius, Phycis blennoides,andMullus barbatusfor teleost fish. The recruitment index was also considered forN. norvegicus, P. longirostris, M. merlucciusandMullus barbatus. Six candidate models were evaluated for each density and recruitment data set either combining fishing effort with global (NAO) and regional (SST and precipitation) climatic indices, or models separately involving fishing effort, NAO, or regional climatic indices as the only predictive variable. Model selection was carried out using an information-theoretical approach that applies Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC). High changes over time were observed for the density data and recruitment indices in each species. Apart from hake abundance and recruitment data, for which a clear positive relationship with the NAO index alone was detected, the changes observed in the other species seem to be the consequence of the interaction between bottom-up effects linked to changes in physical environment and top-down ones due to the fishing pressure

    Quorum quenching activity of lysates from bioluminescent bacteria isolated from selected Philippine marine and freshwater organisms

    Pathogens use cell density dependent gene expression known as Quorum Sensing (QS) to launch virulent factors. Targeting the QS circuit without killing the pathogens is a very promising alternative to using antibiotics which generate antibiotic resistance. The identity and diversity of bioluminescent bacteria associated with Philippine aquatic organisms, and their potential as sources of anti-QS or quorum quenching (QQ) molecules remain unknown. In this study, out of 43 organisms, 30 were observed to harbor bioluminescent bacteria with 26 from marine and four from freshwater sources. Purified bioluminescent bacterial cultures were screened for QQ activity using motility assay and the membrane fractions (MF) of 5 isolates from marine organisms namely Johnius sp. (croaker), Sillago sp. (golden-lined sillago), Variola louti (yellow-edged lyretail), Strombus variabilis (variable conch), Cistopus indicus (octopus), and one from a freshwater host, Chanos chanos (milkfish), inhibited the QS-mediated swarming of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain NSRI based on statistical analysis using Paired t-test and Univariate Analysis of Variance (p \u3c 0.05). Despite the host differences, the bacterial isolates shared evolutionary relationship with commonly known bioluminescent genera based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis with five strains belonging to the genus Photobacterium (P. leiognathi and P. mandapamensis, 99-100% identity), and two to the genus Vibrio (V. harveyi and V. campbellii, with 99% identity)

    Explaining LSND by a decaying sterile neutrino

    We propose an explanation of the LSND evidence for electron antineutrino appearance based on neutrino decay. We introduce a heavy neutrino, which is produced in pion and muon decays because of a small mixing with muon neutrinos, and then decays into a scalar particle and a light neutrino, predominantly of the electron type. We require values of gm4g m_4\sim few eV, gg being the neutrino--scalar coupling and m4m_4 the heavy neutrino mass, e.g. m4m_4 in the range from 1 keV to 1 MeV and g106103g \sim 10^{-6} - 10^{-3}. Performing a fit to the LSND data as well as all relevant null-result experiments, we show that all data can be explained within this decay scenario. In the minimal version of the decay model, we predict a signal in the upcoming MiniBooNE experiment corresponding to a transition probability of the same order as seen in LSND. In addition, we show that extending our model to two nearly degenerate heavy neutrinos it is possible to introduce CP violation in the decay, which can lead to a suppression of the signal in MiniBooNE running in the neutrino mode. We briefly discuss signals in future neutrino oscillation experiments, we show that our scenario is compatible with bounds from laboratory experiments, and we comment on implications in astrophysics and cosmology.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, minor improvements, matches published versio

    Measurement of Total and Differential Cross Sections of Neutrino and Antineutrino Coherent π±\pi^\pm Production on Carbon

    Neutrino induced coherent charged pion production on nuclei, νμAμ±πA\overline{\nu}_\mu A\to\mu^\pm\pi^\mp A, is a rare inelastic interaction in which the four-momentum squared transfered to the nucleus is nearly zero, leaving it intact. We identify such events in the scintillator of MINERvA by reconstructing |t| from the final state pion and muon momenta and by removing events with evidence of energetic nuclear recoil or production of other final state particles. We measure the total neutrino and antineutrino cross sections as a function of neutrino energy between 2 and 20 GeV and measure flux integrated differential cross sections as a function of Q2Q^2, EπE_\pi and θπ\theta_\pi. The Q2Q^2 dependence and equality of the neutrino and anti-neutrino cross-sections at finite Q2Q^2 provide a confirmation of Adler's PCAC hypothesis

    Measurement of Partonic Nuclear Effects in Deep-Inelastic Neutrino Scattering using MINERvA

    The MINERvA collaboration reports a novel study of neutrino-nucleus charged-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using the same neutrino beam incident on targets of polystyrene, graphite, iron, and lead. Results are presented as ratios of C, Fe, and Pb to CH. The ratios of total DIS cross sections as a function of neutrino energy and flux-integrated differential cross sections as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable x are presented in the neutrino-energy range of 5 - 50 GeV. Good agreement is found between the data and predicted ratios, based on charged-lepton nucleus scattering, at medium x and low neutrino energies. However, the data rate appears depleted in the vicinity of the nuclear shadowing region, x < 0.1. This apparent deficit, reflected in the DIS cross-section ratio at high neutrino energy , is consistent with previous MINERvA observations and with the predicted onset of nuclear shadowing with the the axial-vector current in neutrino scattering

    The distribution of potential West Nile virus vectors, Culex pipiens pipiens and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae), in Mexico City

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Culex </it>spp. mosquitoes are considered to be the most important vectors of West Nile virus (WNV) detected in at least 34 species of mosquitoes in the United States. In North America, <it>Culex pipiens pipiens, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus</it>, and <it>Culex tarsalis </it>are all competent vectors of WNV, which is considered to be enzootic in the United States and has also been detected in equines and birds in many states of Mexico and in humans in Nuevo Leon. There is potential for WNV to be introduced into Mexico City by various means including infected mosquitoes on airplanes, migrating birds, ground transportation and infected humans. Little is known of the geographic distribution of <it>Culex pipiens </it>complex mosquitoes and hybrids in Mexico City. <it>Culex pipiens pipiens </it>preferentially feed on avian hosts; <it>Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus </it>have historically been considered to prefer mammalian hosts; and hybrids of these two species could theoretically serve as bridge vectors to transmit WNV from avian hosts to humans and other mammalian hosts. In order to address the potential of WNV being introduced into Mexico City, we have determined the identity and spatial distribution of <it>Culex pipiens </it>complex mosquitoes and their hybrids.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mosquito larvae collected from 103 sites throughout Mexico City during 2004-2005 were identified as <it>Culex, Culiseta </it>or <it>Ochlerotatus </it>by morphological analysis. Within the genus <it>Culex</it>, specimens were further identified as <it>Culex tarsalis </it>or as belonging to the <it>Culex pipiens </it>complex. Members of the <it>Culex pipiens </it>complex were separated by measuring the ratio of the dorsal and ventral arms (DV/D ratio) of the male genitalia and also by using diagnostic primers designed for the <it>Ace.2 </it>gene. <it>Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus </it>was the most abundant form collected.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Important WNV vectors species, <it>Cx. p. pipiens</it>, <it>Cx. p. quinquefasciatus </it>and <it>Cx. tarsalis</it>, are all present in Mexico City. Hybrids of <it>Cx. p. pipiens </it>and <it>Cx. p. quinquefasciatus </it>were also collected and identified. The presence and abundance of these WNV competent vectors is a cause for concern. Understanding the distribution of these vectors can help improve viral surveillance activities and mosquito control efforts in Mexico City.</p
