Spectroscopy and BVI photometry of the young open cluster NGC 6604
BVI photometry (from South Africa Astron. Obs.), Echelle high resolution
spectroscopy and AFOSC integral field spectroscopy (from Asiago, Italy) of the
young open cluster NGC 6604 are presented. Age, distance, reddening,
membership, radial and rotational velocities are derived and discussed. An age
of 5 million years, a distance of 1.7 kpc and a reddening E(B-V)=1.02 are
found. The cluster radial velocity is in agreement with the Hron (1987) model
for the Galaxy disk rotation. Pre-ZAMS objects are not present down to M_V =

Transcript expression of vesicular glutamate transporters in lumbar dorsal root ganglia and the spinal cord of mice – Effects of peripheral axotomy or hindpaw inflammation
Using specific riboprobes, we characterized the expression of vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT)1–VGLUT3 transcripts in lumbar 4–5 (L4–5) dorsal root ganglions (DRGs) and the thoracolumbar to lumbosacral spinal cord in male BALB/c mice after a 1- or 3-day hindpaw inflammation, or a 7-day sciatic nerve axotomy. Sham animals were also included. In sham and contralateral L4–5 DRGs of injured mice, VGLUT1-, VGLUT2- and VGLUT3 mRNAs were expressed in ∼45%, ∼69% or ∼17% of neuron profiles (NPs), respectively. VGLUT1 was expressed in large and medium-sized NPs, VGLUT2 in NPs of all sizes, and VGLUT3 in small and medium-sized NPs. In the spinal cord, VGLUT1 was restricted to a number of NPs at thoracolumbar and lumbar segments, in what appears to be the dorsal nucleus of Clarke, and in mid laminae III–IV. In contrast, VGLUT2 was present in numerous NPs at all analyzed spinal segments, except the lateral aspects of the ventral horns, especially at the lumbar enlargement, where it was virtually absent. VGLUT3 was detected in a discrete number of NPs in laminae III–IV of the dorsal horn. Axotomy resulted in a moderate decrease in the number of DRG NPs expressing VGLUT3, whereas VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 were unaffected. Likewise, the percentage of NPs expressing VGLUT transcripts remained unaltered after hindpaw inflammation, both in DRGs and the spinal cord. Altogether, these results confirm previous descriptions on VGLUTs expression in adult mice DRGs, with the exception of VGLUT1, whose protein expression was detected in a lower percentage of mouse DRG NPs. A detailed account on the location of neurons expressing VGLUTs transcripts in the adult mouse spinal cord is also presented. Finally, the lack of change in the number of neurons expressing VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 transcripts after axotomy, as compared to data on protein expression, suggests translational rather than transcriptional regulation of VGLUTs after injury.Fil: Malet, Mariana. A Motivating Exploration on Lunar Craters and Low-Energy Dynamics in the Earth -- Moon System
It is known that most of the craters on the surface of the Moon were created
by the collision of minor bodies of the Solar System. Main Belt Asteroids,
which can approach the terrestrial planets as a consequence of different types
of resonance, are actually the main responsible for this phenomenon. Our aim is
to investigate the impact distributions on the lunar surface that low-energy
dynamics can provide. As a first approximation, we exploit the hyberbolic
invariant manifolds associated with the central invariant manifold around the
equilibrium point L_2 of the Earth - Moon system within the framework of the
Circular Restricted Three - Body Problem. Taking transit trajectories at
several energy levels, we look for orbits intersecting the surface of the Moon
and we attempt to define a relationship between longitude and latitude of
arrival and lunar craters density. Then, we add the gravitational effect of the
Sun by considering the Bicircular Restricted Four - Body Problem. As further
exploration, we assume an uniform density of impact on the lunar surface,
looking for the regions in the Earth - Moon neighbourhood these colliding
trajectories have to come from. It turns out that low-energy ejecta originated
from high-energy impacts are also responsible of the phenomenon we are

The supernova impostor PSN J09132750+7627410 and its progenitor
We report the results of our follow-up campaign of the supernova impostor PSN
J09132750+7627410, based on optical data covering . From the
beginning, the transient shows prominent narrow Balmer lines with P-Cygni
profiles, with a blue-shifted absorption component becoming more prominent with
time. Along the of the spectroscopic monitoring, broad
components are never detected in the hydrogen lines, suggesting that these
features are produced in slowly expanding material. The transient reaches an
absolute magnitude at maximum, a typical
luminosity for supernova impostors. Amateur astronomers provided
of archival observations of the host galaxy, NGC 2748. The
detection of the quiescent progenitor star in archival images obtained with the
Hubble Space Telescope suggests it to be an \msun white-yellow

Stem photosynthesis contributes to non-structural carbohydrate pool and modulates xylem vulnerability to embolism in Fraxinus ornus L
Stem photosynthesis can significantly contribute to the carbon budget of woody plants, providing an extra carbon gain that might be crucial under drought stress causing leaf photosynthesis impairment and/or a reduced phloem transport.Stems of Fraxinus ornus L. saplings were covered with aluminum foil to test the impact of inhibition of stem photosynthesis on plant vulnerability to drought. Plants were water-stressed to target xylem water potential of-3.5 MPa and were then re-irrigated to field capacity to quantify their recovery capacity. Vulnerability to xylem embolism was assessed in light-exposed and stem-shaded saplings with both the hydraulic method and in vivo with X-ray phase contrast micro-computed tomography. We also measured non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) concentration and osmotic potential in bark and wood, separately.Stem shading increased xylem vulnerability to embolism formation under drought but did not influence the recovery phase. This difference was coupled with modification of the NSC pool and impaired osmoregulation, in particular in the wood of stem-shaded saplings compared to control ones.Our results indicate stem photosynthesis as an important source of local NSCs, directly or indirectly involved in osmoregulation processes, which could be crucial to enhance the hydraulic resistance to embolism formation and to endure drought
Supernova 2012ec: Identification of the progenitor and early monitoring with PESSTO
We present the identification of the progenitor of the Type IIP SN 2012ec in
archival pre-explosion HST WFPC2 and ACS/WFC F814W images. The properties of
the progenitor are further constrained by non-detections in pre-explosion WFPC2
F450W and F606W images. We report a series of early photometric and
spectroscopic observations of SN 2012ec. The r'-band light curve shows a
plateau with M(r')=-17.0. The early spectrum is similar to the Type IIP SN
1999em, with the expansion velocity measured at Halpha absorption minimum of
-11,700 km/s (at 1 day post-discovery). The photometric and spectroscopic
evolution of SN 2012ec shows it to be a Type IIP SN, discovered only a few days
post-explosion (<6d). We derive a luminosity for the progenitor, in comparison
with MARCS model SEDs, of log L/Lsun = 5.15+/-0.19, from which we infer an
initial mass range of 14-22Msun. This is the first SN with an identified
progenitor to be followed by the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient

Optical and near infrared observations of SN 2014ck: an outlier among the Type Iax supernovae
We present a comprehensive set of optical and near-infrared photometric and
spectroscopic observations for SN 2014ck, extending from pre-maximum to six
months later. These data indicate that SN 2014ck is photometrically nearly
identical to SN 2002cx, which is the prototype of the class of peculiar
transients named SNe Iax. Similar to SN 2002cx, SN 2014ck reached a peak
brightness mag, with a post-maximum decline-rate mag. However, the spectroscopic sequence shows
similarities with SN 2008ha, which was three magnitudes fainter and faster
declining. In particular, SN 2014ck exhibits extremely low ejecta velocities,
km s at maximum, which are close to the value measured for
SN 2008ha and half the value inferred for SN 2002cx. The bolometric light curve
of SN 2014ck is consistent with the production of of Ni. The spectral identification of several iron-peak
features, in particular Co II lines in the NIR, provides a clear link to SNe
Ia. Also, the detection of narrow Si, S and C features in the pre-maximum
spectra suggests a thermonuclear explosion mechanism. The late-phase spectra
show a complex overlap of both permitted and forbidden Fe, Ca and Co lines. The
appearance of strong [Ca~II] 7292, 7324 again mirrors the
late-time spectra of SN 2008ha and SN 2002cx. The photometric resemblance to SN
2002cx and the spectral similarities to SN 2008ha highlight the peculiarity of
