Coal desulfurization process
A method for chlorinolysis of coal is an organic solvent at a moderate temperautre and atmospheric pressure has been proven to be effective in removing sulfur, particularly the organic sulfur, from coal. Chlorine gas is bubbled through a slurry of moist coal in chlorinated solvent. The chlorinated coal is separated, hydrolyzed and the dechlorinated. Preliminary results of treating a high sulfutr (4.77%S) bituminous coal show that up to 70% organic sulfur, 90% hyritic sulfur and 76% total sulfur can be removed. The treated coal is dechlorinated by heating at 500 C. The presence of moisture helps to remove organic sulfur
Space-time translational gauge identities in Abelian Yang-Mills gravity
We derive and calculate the space-time translational gauge identities in
quantum Yang-Mills gravity with a general class of gauge conditions involving
two arbitrary parameters. These identities of the Abelian group of translation
are a generalization of Ward-Takahasi-Fradkin identities and important for
general discussions of possible renormalization of Yang-Mills gravity with
translational gauge symmetry. The gauge identities in Yang-Mills gravity with a
general class of gauge conditions are substantiated by explicit calculations.Comment: 15 pages. To be published in The European Physical Journal - Plus

Invisible Higgs boson, continuous mass fields and unHiggs mechanism
We explore the consequences of an electroweak symmetry breaking sector which
exhibits approximately scale invariant dynamics -- i.e., nontrivial fixed point
behavior, as in unparticle models. One can think of an unHiggs as a composite
Higgs boson with a continuous mass distribution. We find it convenient to
represent the unHiggs in terms of a Kallen-Lehmann spectral function, from
which it is simple to verify the generation of gauge boson and fermion masses,
and unitarization of WW scattering. We show that a spectral function with broad
support, which corresponds to approximate fixed point behavior over an extended
range of energy, can lead to an effectively invisible Higgs particle, whose
decays at LEP or LHC could be obscured by background.Comment: 8 page
Topological density wave states of non-zero angular momentum
The pseudogap state of high temperature superconductors is a profound
mystery. It has tantalizing evidence of a number of broken symmetry states, not
necessarily conventional charge and spin density waves. Here we explore a class
of more exotic density wave states characterized by topological properties
observed in recently discovered topological insulators. We suggest that these
rich topological density wave states deserve closer attention in not only high
temperature superconductors but in other correlated electron states, as in
heavy fermions.Comment: Expanded version, 7 pages, 6 figure
Multi-chord fiber-coupled interferometer with a long coherence length laser
This paper describes a 561 nm laser heterodyne interferometer that provides
time-resolved measurements of line-integrated plasma electron density within
the range of 10^15-10^18 cm^(-2). Such plasmas are produced by railguns on the
Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX), which aims to produce \mu s-, cm-, and
Mbar-scale plasmas through the merging of thirty plasma jets in a spherically
convergent geometry. A long coherence length, 320 mW laser allows for a strong,
sub-fringe phase-shift signal without the need for closely-matched probe and
reference path lengths. Thus only one reference path is required for all eight
probe paths, and an individual probe chord can be altered without altering the
reference or other probe path lengths. Fiber-optic decoupling of the probe
chord optics on the vacuum chamber from the rest of the system allows the probe
paths to be easily altered to focus on different spatial regions of the plasma.
We demonstrate that sub-fringe resolution capability allows the interferometer
to operate down to line-integrated densities of order 10^15 cm^(-2).Comment: submitted to Rev. Sci. Instrum. (2011
Resonant States in the Electronic Structure of the High Performance Thermoelectrics AgPb_{2+m}$ ; The Role of Ag-Sb Microstructures
Ab initio electronic structure calculations based on gradient corrected
density functional theory were performed on a class of novel quaternary
compounds AgPb_{2+m}$, which were found to be excellent high
temperature thermoelctrics with large figure of merit ZT ~2.2 at 800K. We find
that resonant states appear near the top of the valence and bottom of the
conduction bands of bulk PbTe when Ag and Sb replace Pb. These states can be
understood in terms of modified Te-Ag(Sb) bonds. Electronic structure near the
gap depends sensitively on the microstructural arrangements of Ag-Sb atoms,
suggesting that large ZT values may originate from the nature of these ordering
arrangements.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review Letter
"Minus c" Symmetry in Classical and Quantum Theories
It is shown that the transformations of the charge conjugation in classical
electrodynamics and in quantum theory can be interpreted as the consequences of
the symmetry of Maxwell and Dirac equations with respect to the inversion of
the speed of light: c to -c; t to t; (x,y,z) to (x,y,z), where c is the speed
of light; t is the time; x, y, z are the spatial variables.
The elements of physical interpretation are given.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, Poster at the Fifth International Conference on

Thermal gravity, black holes and cosmological entropy
Taking seriously the interpretation of black hole entropy as the logarithm of
the number of microstates, we argue that thermal gravitons may undergo a phase
transition to a kind of black hole condensate. The phase transition proceeds
via nucleation of black holes at a rate governed by a saddlepoint configuration
whose free energy is of order the inverse temperature in Planck units. Whether
the universe remains in a low entropy state as opposed to the high entropy
black hole condensate depends sensitively on its thermal history. Our results
may clarify an old observation of Penrose regarding the very low entropy state
of the universe.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, RevTex. v4: to appear in Phys. Rev.
Trellis phase codes for power-bandwith efficient satellite communications
Support work on improved power and spectrum utilization on digital satellite channels was performed. Specific attention is given to the class of signalling schemes known as continuous phase modulation (CPM). The specific work described in this report addresses: analytical bounds on error probability for multi-h phase codes, power and bandwidth characterization of 4-ary multi-h codes, and initial results of channel simulation to assess the impact of band limiting filters and nonlinear amplifiers on CPM performance
