Synchronous primary malignancy of head and neck- a case report

    Get PDF
The incidence of multiple primary malignant neoplasms increases with age, reflecting an increase in overall cancer risk in older patients. Cases of two or more concurrent primary cancers are still rare, although its incidence is increasing. Here, we report the case of a 41-years female who was referred to our institution with synchronous papillary carcinoma of thyroid and Adenoid cystic carcinoma of submandibular gland. The case is being presented to emphasize that the clinicians should keep in mind that the appearance of another tumour in a patient suffering from cancer could be either a synchronous or a metachronous or a metastatic lesion

Development of Single Serum ELISA and Flow Through Assay for Infectious Bursal Disease of Poultry

The infectious bursal disease (IBD) is an age-limiting viral disease of chicken affecting both broiler and layer chicks between 3 – 6 weeks of age characterized by severe immunosuppression and high mortality. The maternally derived antibodies protect chicks till they develop age – resistance, hence breeder flocks immune status monitoring regularly helps in ensuring adequate levels of maternal antibodies transfer to hatchlings and fine tuning of vaccination schedule. The conventional virus neutralization test (VNT) though gold standard, is time consuming and cumbersome. Hence, alternate immunodiagnostic tests which are simple and relatively easy to perform viz., single serum dilution enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antibody titre and flow through assay (FTA) for antigen detection were developed. A standard curve was constructed by using regression analysis which helped in derivation of an equation and that allowed to demonstrate correlation between observed titre and predicted titre. At a dilution of 1:2000 of serum there was a linear relationship between predicted titres at single serum dilution and observed titre. The FTA was able to detect 200 ng / µl concentrations of IBDV. The FTA can be performed as, on spot test for detection of IBDV in suspected cases

Synthesis and Elastic Characterization of Zinc Oxide Nanowires

    Get PDF
Zinc oxide nanowires, nanobelts, and nanoneedles were synthesized using the vapor-liquid-solid technique. Young's modulus of the nanowires was measured by performing cantilever bending experiments on individual nanowires in situ inside a scanning electron microscope. The nanowires tested had diameters in the range of 200–750 nm. The average Young's modulus, measured to be 40 GPa, is about 30% of that reported at the bulk scale. The experimental results are discussed in light of the pronounced electromechanical coupling due to the piezoelectric nature of the material

Multiwavelength Study on Solar and Interplanetary Origins of the Strongest Geomagnetic Storm of Solar Cycle 23

We study the solar sources of an intense geomagnetic storm of solar cycle 23 that occurred on 20 November 2003, based on ground- and space-based multiwavelength observations. The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) responsible for the above geomagnetic storm originated from the super-active region NOAA 10501. We investigate the H-alpha observations of the flare events made with a 15 cm solar tower telescope at ARIES, Nainital, India. The propagation characteristics of the CMEs have been derived from the three-dimensional images of the solar wind (i.e., density and speed) obtained from the interplanetary scintillation data, supplemented with other ground- and space-based measurements. The TRACE, SXI and H-alpha observations revealed two successive ejections (of speeds ~350 and ~100 km/s), originating from the same filament channel, which were associated with two high speed CMEs (~1223 and ~1660 km/s, respectively). These two ejections generated propagating fast shock waves (i.e., fast drifting type II radio bursts) in the corona. The interaction of these CMEs along the Sun-Earth line has led to the severity of the storm. According to our investigation, the interplanetary medium consisted of two merging magnetic clouds (MCs) that preserved their identity during their propagation. These magnetic clouds made the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) southward for a long time, which reconnected with the geomagnetic field, resulting the super-storm (Dst_peak=-472 nT) on the Earth.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Solar Physic

Scattering Theory of Kondo Mirages and Observation of Single Kondo Atom Phase Shift

We explain the origin of the Kondo mirage seen in recent quantum corral Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) experiments with a scattering theory of electrons on the surfaces of metals. Our theory combined with experimental data provides the first direct observation of a single Kondo atom phase shift. The Kondo mirage at the empty focus of an elliptical quantum corral is shown to arise from multiple electron bounces off the walls of the corral in a manner analagous to the formation of a real image in optics. We demonstrate our theory with direct quantitive comparision to experimental data.Comment: 13 pages; significant clarifications of metho

Duality and Anholonomy in Quantum Mechanics of 1D Contact Interactions

We study systems with parity invariant contact interactions in one dimension. The model analyzed is the simplest nontrivial one --- a quantum wire with a point defect --- and yet is shown to exhibit exotic phenomena, such as strong vs weak coupling duality and spiral anholonomy in the spectral flow. The structure underlying these phenomena is SU(2), which arises as accidental symmetry for a particular class of interactions.Comment: 4 pages ReVTeX with 4 epsf figures. KEK preprint 2000-3.
