    Seismic resilience of road bridges: lessons learned from the 14 November 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake

    ABSTRACT: The 14th of November 2016 KaikĹŤura Earthquake sequence has highly affected the transport infrastructure in New Zealand. From the perspective of life-safety, the overall bridge performance was satisfactory; however, based on the observed undesirable sub-system performance of the damaged bridges, further investigation into possible improvements of the current design philosophy was warranted. This paper describes the structural performance of the most severely damaged bridges during the KaikĹŤura Earthquake. The study is based on observations made during site inspections, on subsequent computational analyses performed and on a functionality database collected during the period following the event. The paper also introduces resilience indicators as a tool to predict the lifecycle performance and functionality of bridges. Finally, conclusions on the resilience and functionality of the bridges in the aftermath of the earthquake are raised, highlighting the main performance issues and suggesting strategies and technologies to enhance their seismic resilience during future events

    EPIC247098361b: a transiting warm Saturn on an eccentric P=11.2P=11.2 days orbit around a V=9.9V=9.9 star

    We report the discovery of EPIC247098361b using photometric data of the Kepler K2 satellite coupled with ground-based spectroscopic observations. EPIC247098361b has a mass of MP=0.397±0.037_{P}=0.397\pm 0.037 MJ_J, a radius of RP=1.00±0.020_{P}=1.00 \pm 0.020 RJ_J, and a moderately low equilibrium temperature of Teq=1030±15T_{eq}=1030 \pm 15 K due to its relatively large star-planet separation of a=0.1036a=0.1036 AU. EPIC247098361b orbits its bright (V=9.9V=9.9) late F-type host star in an eccentric orbit (e=0.258±0.025e=0.258 \pm 0.025) every 11.2 days, and is one of only four well characterized warm Jupiters having hosts stars brighter than V=10V=10. We estimate a heavy element content of 20 ±\pm 7 M⊕_{\oplus} for EPIC247098361b, which is consistent with standard models of giant planet formation. The bright host star of EPIC247098361b makes this system a well suited target for detailed follow-up observations that will aid in the study of the atmospheres and orbital evolution of giant planets at moderate separations from their host stars.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Gut Microbiota Promote Hematopoiesis to Control Bacterial Infection

    The commensal microbiota impacts specific immune cell populations and their functions at peripheral sites, such as gut mucosal tissues. However, it remains unknown whether gut microbiota control immunity through regulation of hematopoiesis at primary immune sites. We reveal that germ-free mice display reduced proportions and differentiation potential of specific myeloid cell progenitors of both yolk sac and bone marrow origin. Homeostatic innate immune defects may lead to impaired early responses to pathogens. Indeed, following systemic infection with Listeria monocytogenes, germ-free and oral-antibiotic-treated mice display increased pathogen burden and acute death. Recolonization of germ-free mice with a complex microbiota restores defects in myelopoiesis and resistance to Listeria. These findings reveal that gut bacteria direct innate immune cell development via promoting hematopoiesis, contributing to our appreciation of the deep evolutionary connection between mammals and their microbiota
