The Numerical Simulation of Radiative Shocks I: The elimination of numerical shock instabilities using a localized oscillation filter
We address a numerical instability that arises in the directionally split
computation of hydrodynamic flows when shock fronts are parallel to a grid
plane. Transverse oscillations in pressure, density and temperature are
produced that are exacerbated by thermal instability when cooling is present,
forming post--shock `stripes'. These are orthogonal to the classic post--shock
'ringing' fluctuations. The resulting post--shock `striping' substantially
modifies the flow. We discuss three different methods to resolve this problem.
These include (1) a method based on artificial viscosity; (2) grid--jittering
and (3) a new localized oscillation filter that acts on specific grid cells in
the shock front. These methods are tested using a radiative wall shock problem
with an embedded shear layer. The artificial viscosity method is unsatisfactory
since, while it does reduce post--shock ringing, it does not eliminate the
stripes and the excessive shock broadening renders the calculation of cooling
inaccurate, resulting in an incorrect shock location. Grid--jittering
effectively counteracts striping. However, elsewhere on the grid, the shear
layer is unphysically diffused and this is highlighted in an extreme case. The
oscillation filter method removes stripes and permits other high velocity
gradient regions of the flow to evolve in a physically acceptable manner. It
also has the advantage of only acting on a small fraction of the cells in a two

Angular Momentum Distribution Function of the Laughlin Droplet
We have evaluated the angular-momentum distribution functions for finite
numbers of electrons in Laughlin states. For very small numbers of electrons
the angular-momentum state occupation numbers have been evaluated exactly while
for larger numbers of electrons they have been obtained from Monte-Carlo
estimates of the one-particle density matrix. An exact relationship, valid for
any number of electrons, has been derived for the ratio of the occupation
numbers of the two outermost orbitals of the Laughlin droplet and is used to
test the accuracy of the MC calculations. We compare the occupation numbers
near the outer edges of the droplets with predictions based on the chiral
Luttinger liquid picture of Laughlin state edges and discuss the surprisingly
large oscillations in occupation numbers which occur for angular momenta far

Probabilistic Cross-Identification of Astronomical Sources
We present a general probabilistic formalism for cross-identifying
astronomical point sources in multiple observations. Our Bayesian approach,
symmetric in all observations, is the foundation of a unified framework for
object matching, where not only spatial information, but physical properties,
such as colors, redshift and luminosity, can also be considered in a natural
way. We provide a practical recipe to implement an efficient recursive
algorithm to evaluate the Bayes factor over a set of catalogs with known
circular errors in positions. This new methodology is crucial for studies
leveraging the synergy of today's multi-wavelength observations and to enter

The "new genetics" and clinical practice

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.A "new genetics" has emerged driven by knowledge gained at the DNA level. In clinical practice, a practical application of the new genetics is DNA testing, which can be expected to expand with the completion of the Human Genome Project as the functions of new genes are discovered. Genetic DNA testing scenarios include diagnostic DNA testing, prenatal DNA testing, predictive (presymptomatic) DNA testing and screening DNA testing. The challenge for genetic DNA testing and clinical practice will be to define the roles to be played by the general practitioner, the specialist, and other healthcare professionals. From the patients' and families' perspective, the new genetics will best be implemented if a planned approach is adopted in the ordering of DNA tests and the associated counselling and support processes.Ronald J A Trent, Robert Williamson and Grant R Sutherlan

Discovery of three z>6.5 quasars in the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey
Studying quasars at the highest redshifts can constrain models of galaxy and
black hole formation, and it also probes the intergalactic medium in the early
universe. Optical surveys have to date discovered more than 60 quasars up to
z~6.4, a limit set by the use of the z-band and CCD detectors. Only one z>6.4
quasar has been discovered, namely the z=7.08 quasar ULAS J1120+0641, using
near-infrared imaging. Here we report the discovery of three new z>6.4 quasars
in 332 square degrees of the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for
Astronomy Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, thus extending the
number from 1 to 4. The newly discovered quasars have redshifts of z=6.60,
6.75, and 6.89. The absolute magnitudes are between -26.0 and -25.5, 0.6-1.1
mag fainter than ULAS J1120+0641. Near-infrared spectroscopy revealed the MgII
emission line in all three objects. The quasars are powered by black holes with
masses of ~(1-2)x10^9 M_sun. In our probed redshift range of 6.44<z<7.44 we can
set a lower limit on the space density of supermassive black holes of
\rho(M_BH>10^9 M_sun) > 1.1x10^(-9) Mpc^(-3). The discovery of three quasars in
our survey area is consistent with the z=6 quasar luminosity function when
extrapolated to z~7. We do not find evidence for a steeper decline in the space

Thermodynamics of an one-dimensional ideal gas with fractional exclusion statistics
We show that the particles in the Calogero-Sutherland Model obey fractional
exclusion statistics as defined by Haldane. We construct anyon number densities
and derive the energy distribution function. We show that the partition
function factorizes in the form characteristic of an ideal gas. The virial
expansion is exactly computable and interestingly it is only the second virial

Some Properties of the Calogero-Sutherland Model with Reflections
We prove that the Calogero-Sutherland Model with reflections (the BC_N model)
possesses a property of duality relating the eigenfunctions of two Hamiltonians
with different coupling constants. We obtain a generating function for their
polynomial eigenfunctions, the generalized Jacobi polynomials. The symmetry of
the wave-functions for certain particular cases (associated to the root systems
