Cell cycle regulation of a Xenopus Wee1-like kinase
Using a polymerase chain reaction-based strategy, we have isolated a gene encoding a Wee1-like kinase from Xenopus eggs. The recombinant Xenopus Wee1 protein efficiently phosphorylates Cdc2 exclusively on Tyr- 15 in a cyclin-dependent manner. The addition of exogenous Wee1 protein to Xenopus cell cycle extracts results in a dose-dependent delay of mitotic initiation that is accompanied by enhanced tyrosine phosphorylation of Cdc2. The activity of the Wee1 protein is highly regulated during the cell cycle: the interphase, underphosphorylated form of Wee1 (68 kDa) phosphorylates Cdc2 very efficiently, whereas the mitotic, hyperphosphorylated version (75 kDa) is weakly active as a Cdc2-specific tyrosine kinase. The down-modulation of Wee1 at mitosis is directly attributable to phosphorylation, since dephosphorylation with protein phosphatase 2A restores its kinase activity. During interphase, the activity of this Wee1 homolog does not vary in response to the presence of unreplicated DNA. The mitosis-specific phosphorylation of Wee1 is due to at least two distinct kinases: the Cdc2 protein and another activity (kinase X) that may correspond to an MPM-2 epitope kinase. These studies indicate that the down-regulation of Wee1-like kinase activity at mitosis is a multistep process that occurs after other biochemical reactions have signaled the successful completion of S phase
Solar Orbiter: Exploring the Sun-heliosphere connection
The heliosphere represents a uniquely accessible domain of space, where
fundamental physical processes common to solar, astrophysical and laboratory
plasmas can be studied under conditions impossible to reproduce on Earth and
unfeasible to observe from astronomical distances. Solar Orbiter, the first
mission of ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme, will address the central
question of heliophysics: How does the Sun create and control the heliosphere?
In this paper, we present the scientific goals of the mission and provide an
overview of the mission implementation.Comment: 52 pages, 21 figures, 125 references; accepted for publication in

Data from tests of a R4 airfoil in the Langley 0.3-meter transonic cryogenic tunnel
Aerodynamic data for the DFVLR R4 airfoil are presented in both graphic and tabular form. The R4 was tested in the Langley 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (TCT) at Mach number from 0.60 to 0.78 at angles of attack from -2.0 to 8.0 degrees. The airfoil was tested at Reynolds numbers of 4, 6, 10, 15, 30, and 40 million based on the 152.32 mm chord

High Energy Quark-Antiquark Elastic scattering with Mesonic Exchange
We studies the high energy elastic scattering of quark anti-quark with an

Both the normalization factor and the Regge trajectory can be calculated in
PQCD in cases of fixed (non-running) and running coupling constant. The
dependence of the Regge trajectory on the coupling constant is highly
non-linear and the trajectory is of order of in the interesting physical
range.Comment: 29 page
Radio Astronomical Polarimetry and the Lorentz Group
In radio astronomy the polarimetric properties of radiation are often
modified during propagation and reception. Effects such as Faraday rotation,
receiver cross-talk, and differential amplification act to change the state of
polarized radiation. A general description of such transformations is useful
for the investigation of these effects and for the interpretation and
calibration of polarimetric observations. Such a description is provided by the
Lorentz group, which is intimately related to the transformation properties of
polarized radiation. In this paper the transformations that commonly arise in
radio astronomy are analyzed in the context of this group. This analysis is
then used to construct a model for the propagation and reception of radio
waves. The implications of this model for radio astronomical polarimetry are
discussed.Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa
Operating characteristics of the Langley Mach 7 Scramjet Test Facility
Operating characteristics of the Langley Mach 7 Scramjet Test Facility are described. The facility is designed for testing airframe integrated scramjet (supersonic combustion ramjet) engine models. Features include duplication of the flight Mach number total enthalpy, flight altitude simulation, and simulation of engine airframe integration effects such a bow shock wave precompression and boundary layer ingestion by the engine. Data obtained from facility calibration and from tests of a hydrogen burning, airframe integrated scramjet are discussed. An adverse interaction between the facility flow and the scramjet engine flow during combustion of the fuel is described
Bonding machine for forming a solar array strip
A machine is described for attaching solar cells to a flexable substrate on which printed circuitry has been deposited. The strip is fed through: (1) a station in which solar cells are elevated into engagement with solder pads for the printed circuitry and thereafter heated by an infrared lamp; (2) a station at which flux and solder residue is removed; (3) a station at which electrical performance of the soldered cells is determined; (4) a station at which an encapsulating resin is deposited on the cells; (5) a station at which the encapsulated solar cells are examined for electrical performance; and (6) a final station at which the resulting array is wound on a takeup drum
On the Angular Dependence of the Radiative Gluon Spectrum
The induced momentum spectrum of soft gluons radiated from a high energy
quark produced in and propagating through a QCD medium is reexamined in the
BDMPS formalism. A mistake in our published work (Physical Review C60 (1999)
064902) is corrected. The correct dependence of the fractional induced loss
as a universal function of the variable
where is the size of the medium and
the transport coefficient is presented. We add the proof that the
radiated gluon momentum spectrum derived in our formalism is equivalent with
the one derived in the Zakharov-Wiedemann approach.Comment: LaTex, 5 pages, 1 figur
