    Microscopic nanomechanical dissipation in gallium arsenide resonators

    We report on a systematic study of nanomechanical dissipation in high-frequency (approximatively 300 MHz) gallium arsenide optomechanical disk resonators, in conditions where clamping and fluidic losses are negligible. Phonon-phonon interactions are shown to contribute with a loss background fading away at cryogenic temperatures (3 K). Atomic layer deposition of alumina at the surface modifies the quality factor of resonators, pointing towards the importance of surface dissipation. The temperature evolution is accurately fitted by two-level systems models, showing that nanomechanical dissipation in gallium arsenide resonators directly connects to their microscopic properties. Two-level systems, notably at surfaces, appear to rule the damping and fluctuations of such high-quality crystalline nanomechanical devices, at all temperatures from 3 to 300K

    A new approach to a powered knee prosthesis: Layering powered assistance onto strictly passive prosthesis behavior

    This article describes a novel approach to the control of a powered knee prosthesis where the control system provides passive behavior for most activities and then provides powered assistance only for those activities that require them. The control approach presented here is based on the categorization of knee joint function during activities into four behaviors: resistive stance behavior, active stance behavior, ballistic swing, and non-ballistic swing. The approach is further premised on the assumption that healthy non-perturbed swing-phase is characterized by a ballistic swing motion, and therefore, a replacement of that function should be similarly ballistic. The control system utilizes a six-state finite-state machine, where each state provides different constitutive behaviors (concomitant with the four aforementioned knee behaviors) which are appropriate for a range of activities. Transitions between states and torque control within states is controlled by user motion, such that the control system provides, to the extent possible, knee torque behavior as a reaction to user motion, including for powered behaviors. The control system is demonstrated on a novel device that provides a sufficiently low impedance to enable a strictly passive ballistic swing-phase, while also providing sufficiently high torque to offer powered stance-phase knee-extension during activities such as step-over stair ascent. Experiments employing the knee and control system on an individual with transfemoral amputation are presented that compare the functionality of the power-supplemented nominally passive system with that of a conventional passive microprocessor-controlled knee prosthesis

    En el presente trabajo se expondrá tanto el proceso realizado como los resultados obtenidos mediante la serie de intervenciones consecutivas que se llevaron a cabo durante seis semanas, trabajo realizado con adultos mayores con y sin discapacidad (tres sujetos) en dos distintas Casas de Día (1° de Mayo y Oblatos), ubicadas dentro de la ciudad de Guadalajara, con la intención de desarrollar un Certificado Amigable para el Adulto Mayor en las Empresas (CAPAME); con la finalidad de generar un impacto positivo en la calidad de vida, autonomía, bienestar e independencia económica dirigido a este sector poblacional al buscar fomentar la inclusión en el ámbito laboral. Acorde al marco teórico respecto de vejez, envejecimiento, calidad de vida, bienestar, autonomía, dependencia, exclusión, inclusión, economía, rentabilidad, segmento de mercado, alianzas comerciales, negocios formales e informales y ciudades amigables, haciendo uso de una metodología cualitativa descriptiva retomando elementos de la propuesta de Flick, (2007), en donde se realizaron ntrevistas grupales, e individuales. Dentro de los resultados obtenidos tiene que ver con las necesidades desde la propia voz de personas mayores que configuraron un marco normativo capaz de fomentar la inclusión del adulto mayor en el ámbito empresarial, abarcando los servicios y su inserción laboral.ITESO, A.C

    The nuanced nature of work quality : evidence from rural Newfoundland and Ireland

    This article explores the relationship between job and work quality and argues that while it is important to examine job quality, to understand workers’ experiences fully, the focus should be on the broader concept of work quality, which places the job against its wider socio-economic context. Based on the experiences of 88 rural workers gathered via interviews in Newfoundland and Ireland, it appears that the same or similar jobs can be regarded very differently depending upon the context in which they are embedded, as people at different locations and/or stages of life have an individual set of aspirations, expectations and life experiences. The study found that the factors that affect work quality are moulded by broader aspects of life – family, friends, community, lifestyle and past experiences – that shape an individual

    Comparing biofilm models for a single species biofilm system

    Abstract A benchmark problem was defined to evaluate the performance of different mathematical biofilm models. The biofilm consisted of heterotrophic bacteria degrading organic substrate and oxygen. Mathematical models tested ranged from simple analytical to multidimensional numerical models. For simple and more or less flat biofilms it was shown that analytical biofilm models provide very similar results compared to more complex numerical solutions. When considering a heterogeneous biofilm morphology it was shown that the effect of an increased external mass transfer resistance was much more significant compared to the effect of an increased surface area inside the biofilm

    Storage, Accumulation and Deceleration of Secondary Beams for Nuclear Astrophysics

    Low-energy investigations on rare ion beams are often limited by the available intensity and purity of the ion species in focus. Here, we present the first application of a technique that combines in-flight production at relativistic energies with subsequent secondary beam storage, accumulation and finally deceleration to the energy of interest. Using the FRS and ESR facilities at GSI, this scheme was pioneered to provide a secondary beam of 118^{118}Te52+^{52+} for the measurement of nuclear proton-capture at energies of 6 and 7 MeV/u. The technique provided stored beam intensities of about 10610^6 ions at high purity and brilliance, representing a major step towards low-energy nuclear physics studies using rare ion beams
