Dynamics of Human Walking
The problem of biped locomotion at steady speeds is discussed through a
Lagrangian formulation developed for velocity-dependent, body driving forces.
Human walking on a level surface is analyzed in terms of the data on the
resultant ground-reaction force and the external work. It is shown that the
trajectory of the center of mass is due to a superposition of its rectilinear
motion with a given speed and a backward rotation along a shortened
hypocycloid. A stiff-to-compliant crossover between walking gaits is described
and the maximum speed for human walking, given by an instability of the
trajectory, is predicted.

Enrichment of microbial populations in macroaggregates (marine snow) from surface waters of the North Atlantic
Marine snow particles (macroscopic detrital aggregates) were collected from surface waters throughout the western North Atlantic. Counts of phototrophic and heterotrophic picoplankton, phototrophic and heterotrophic nanoplankton, and phototrophic microplankton were made by epifluorescence microscopy. A Most Probable Number culture technique also was used to estimate the density of bacterivorous protozoa. All microbial populations enumerated were highly enriched on macroaggregates relative to their densities in the surrounding water. The degree of enrichment was greater in open ocean environments because microorganisms in the surrounding water were less abundant in the open ocean than in nearshore waters, and also because microbial density on marine snow was greater in the open ocean than in nearshore environments. Material released by ctenophores and appendicularia is a likely source of marine snow since it supported microbial populations of the same order of magnitude as were observed on SCUBA-collected particles. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates dominated the bacterivorous protozoa cultured from macroaggregates and the surrounding water, but dense populations of ciliates and amoebae also were present on particles. Protozoan populations on marine snow were so dense relative to the surrounding water as to suggest that detrital aggregates are responsible for the planktonic existence of some bacterivorous species
Diel Relationships of Microbial Trophic Groups and In Situ Dissolved Carbohydrate Dynamics in the Caribbean Sea
Dissolved total carbohydrate (TCHO), polysaccharide (PCHO), monosaccharide (MCHO) and organic carbon (DOC) were determined at 3-h intervals over 5 diel cycles in the mixed layer of the northwestern Caribbean Sea while following a drogued buoy. These data have been compared to populations of phototrophic (PNAN) and heterotrophic (HNAN) nanoplankton (2–20 μm diameter) and heterotrophic bacteria (HBAC) (0.2–2.0 μm diameter) estimated by epifluorescence counts, as well as to ΣCO2, phosphate, chlorophyll a and phaeopigment data determined simultaneously. Two different types of apparent diel dissolved carbohydrate (CHO) patterns were found. On 3 d when no sustained net ΣCO2 uptake was evident, TCHO and PCHO generally declined during the afternoon and early evening while MCHO tended to increase. On two other days when apparent sustained ΣCO2 uptake occurred during the day, there were large evening TCHO and PCHO peaks with constant or declining MCHO levels. These accumulations probably resulted from the release of recently produced PCHO from phototrophs. As was found earlier in the Sargasso Sea, PNAN populations were inversely related to PCHO concentrations. The sample to sample fluctuations of PNAN also were inversely related to the apparent rates of change of TCHO and PCHO, possibly due to an inverse relation between the rates of PNAN cell division and CHO excretion. Fluctuations in HBAC populations were inversely correlated with PCHO dynamics and directly related to MCHO variations, possibly due to extracellular hydrolysis of PCHO to MCHO during periods of rapid bacterial growth as well as to net heterotrophic PCHO uptake. A direct relationship between HNAN and TCHO fluctuations suggests the importance of HNAN excretion in the release of dissolved organics. The combined PNAN and HBAC fluctuations accounted for a more significant fraction of the variance in the apparent rates of change of PCHO than did any single population parameter indicating that intimate interactions between the microbial plankton groups are important in the in-situ regulation of CHO dynamics. Total system net TCHO release and uptake rates for 5 d averaged 56 and 53 μg C l-1 d-1 respectively, assuming that the observed fluctuations resulted from temporal planktonic processes in homogeneous water masses. While the data contain indications that this was the case, this assumption is not definitive
Tunable coaxial cavity resonator for linear and nonlinear microwave characterization of superconducting wires
We discuss experimental results obtained using a tunable cylindrical coaxial
cavity constituted by an outer Cu cylinder and an inner Pb-BSCCO wire. We have
used this device for investigating the microwave response of the
superconducting wire, both in the linear and nonlinear regimes. In particular,
by tuning the different modes of the cavity to make them resonant at exactly
harmonic frequencies, we have detected the power emitted by the superconducting
inner wire at the second- and third-harmonic frequency of the driving field.
The results obtained in the nonlinear regime, whether for the microwave surface
impedance or the harmonic emission, are qualitatively accounted for considering
intergrain fluxon dynamics. The use of this kind of device can be of strong
interest to investigate and characterise wires of large dimensions to be used

Analytic Lifshitz black holes in higher dimensions
We generalize the four-dimensional R^2-corrected z=3/2 Lifshitz black hole to
a two-parameter family of black hole solutions for any dynamical exponent z and
for any dimension D. For a particular relation between the parameters, we find
the first example of an extremal Lifshitz black hole. An asymptotically
Lifshitz black hole with a logarithmic decay is also exhibited for a specific
critical exponent depending on the dimension. We extend this analysis to the
more general quadratic curvature corrections for which we present three new
families of higher-dimensional D>=5 analytic Lifshitz black holes for generic
z. One of these higher-dimensional families contains as critical limits the z=3
three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole and a new z=6 four-dimensional black
hole. The variety of analytic solutions presented here encourages to explore
these gravity models within the context of non-relativistic holographic

BKM Lie superalgebras from counting twisted CHL dyons
Following Sen[arXiv:0911.1563], we study the counting of (`twisted') BPS
states that contribute to twisted helicity trace indices in four-dimensional
CHL models with N=4 supersymmetry. The generating functions of half-BPS states,
twisted as well as untwisted, are given in terms of multiplicative eta products
with the Mathieu group, M_{24}, playing an important role. These multiplicative
eta products enable us to construct Siegel modular forms that count twisted
quarter-BPS states. The square-roots of these Siegel modular forms turn out be
precisely a special class of Siegel modular forms, the dd-modular forms, that
have been classified by Clery and Gritsenko[arXiv:0812.3962]. We show that each
one of these dd-modular forms arise as the Weyl-Kac-Borcherds denominator
formula of a rank-three Borcherds-Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra. The walls of the
Weyl chamber are in one-to-one correspondence with the walls of marginal
stability in the corresponding CHL model for twisted dyons as well as untwisted
ones. This leads to a periodic table of BKM Lie superalgebras with properties

Perturbative tests of non-perturbative counting
We observe that a class of quarter-BPS dyons in N=4 theories with charge
vector (Q, P) and with nontrivial values of the arithmetic duality invariant I
:= gcd (Q wedge P) are nonperturbative in one frame but perturbative in another
frame. This observation suggests a test of the recently computed
nonperturbative partition functions for dyons with nontrivial values of the
arithmetic invariant. For all values of I, we show that the nonperturbative
counting yields vanishing indexed degeneracy for this class of states
everywhere in the moduli space in precise agreement with the perturbative

Negative discriminant states in N=4 supersymmetric string theories
Single centered BPS black hole solutions exist only when the charge carried
by the black hole has positive discriminant. On the other hand the exact dyon
spectrum in heterotic string theory compactified on T^6 is known to contain
states with negative discriminant. We show that all of these negative
discriminant states can be accounted for as two centered black holes. Thus
after the contribution to the index from the two centered black holes is
subtracted from the total microscopic index, the index for states with negative
discriminant vanishes even for finite values of charges, in agreement with the
results from the black hole side. Bound state metamorphosis -- which requires
us to identify certain apparently different two centered configurations
according to a specific set of rules -- plays a crucial role in this analysis.
