    Spin Manipulation and Relaxation in Spin-Orbit Qubits

    We derive a generalized form of the Electric Dipole Spin Resonance (EDSR) Hamiltonian in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction for single spins in an elliptic quantum dot (QD) subject to an arbitrary (in both direction and magnitude) applied magnetic field. We predict a nonlinear behavior of the Rabi frequency as a function of the magnetic field for sufficiently large Zeeman energies, and present a microscopic expression for the anisotropic electron g-tensor. Similarly, an EDSR Hamiltonian is devised for two spins confined in a double quantum dot (DQD), where coherent Rabi oscillations between the singlet and triplet states are induced by jittering the inter-dot distance at the resonance frequency. Finally, we calculate two-electron-spin relaxation rates due to phonon emission, for both in-plane and perpendicular magnetic fields. Our results have immediate applications to current EDSR experiments on nanowire QDs, g-factor optimization of confined carriers, and spin decay measurements in DQD spin-orbit qubits.Comment: 4 figures, 1 Tabl

    Intravesical electromotive mitomycin C versus passive transport mitomycin C for high risk superficial bladder cancer: a prospective randomized study.

    PURPOSE: In laboratory studies electromotive mitomycin C (MMC) demonstrated markedly increased transport rates compared with passive transport. We performed a prospective study in patients with high risk superficial bladder cancer to assess the efficacy of intravesical electromotive vs passive MMC using bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) as a comparative treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following transurethral resection and multiple biopsies 108 patients with multifocal Tis, including 98 with T1 tumors, were randomized into 3 equal groups of 36 each who underwent 40 mg electromotive MMC instillation with 20 mA electric current for 30 minutes, 40 mg passive MMC with a dwell time of 60 minutes or 81 mg BCG with a dwell time of 120 minutes. Patients were scheduled for an initial 6 weekly treatments, a further 6 weekly treatments for nonresponders and a followup 10 monthly treatments for responders. Primary end points were the complete response rate at 3 and 6 months. MMC pharmacokinetics were assessed. RESULTS: The complete response for electromotive vs passive MMC at 3 and 6 months was 53% versus 28% (p = 0.036) and 58% versus 31% (p = 0.012). For BCG the responses were 56% and 64%. Median time to recurrence was 35 vs 19.5 months (p = 0.013) and for BCG it was 26 months. Peak plasma MMC was significantly higher following electromotive MMC than after MMC (43 vs 8 ng/ml), consistent with bladder content absorption. CONCLUSIONS: Intravesical electromotive administration increases bladder uptake of MMC, resulting in an improved response rate in cases of high risk superficial bladder cancer

    PbTe is an important thermoelectric material for power generation applications due its high conversion efficiency and reliability. Its extraordinary thermoelectric performance is attributed to band convergence of the light L and heavy Σ bands. However, the temperature at which these bands converge is disputed. In this letter, we provide direct experimental evidence combined with ab initio calculations that confirm an increasing optical gap up to 673 K and predict a band convergence temperature of 700 K, much higher than previous measurements showing saturation and band convergence at 450 K

    Intravesical electromotive administration of local anesthetics is clinically successful but electrochemistry, cost and effectiveness limit the choice of drugs to diluted lidocaine HCl 4% mixed with epinephrine. These studies address the stability of lidocaine and epinephrine both over time and when exposed to electric current, i.e. transport rates with passive diffusion and electromotive administration. The drug mixture used was 50 ml lidocaine 4%, 50 ml H2O and 1 ml epinephrine 1/1000. For stability, the solution was placed either in bowls for 7 days or in a two chamber cell with the donor compartment (drugs) separated from the receptor compartment (NaCl solution) by a viable pig bladder wall. This was subjected to 30 mA for 45 min. Stability was measured with mass spectrometry. The cell was also used to determine transport rates with passive diffusion and currents of 20 mA and 30 mA, over 20, 30 and 45 min. Drug measurements in both compartments and bladder were made with HPLC. Lidocaine remained stable throughout the 7 days, epinephrine on day 1 only and both drugs were stable with 30 mA for 45 min. Comparing 20 mA and 30 mA with passive diffusion, there were significant differences in 6/6 donor compartment lidocaine levels, 4/6 receptor compartment levels and 6/6 bladder tissue levels and also in 6/6 epinephrine donor levels and 6/6 tissue levels.     Effects of Different Substituents on the Crystal Structures and Antimicrobial Activities of Six Ag(I) Quinoline Compounds

    The syntheses and single crystal X-ray structures of [Ag(5-nitroquinoline)(2)]NO3 (1), [Ag(8-nitroquinoline)(2)]NO3 center dot H2O (2), [Ag(6-methoxy-8-nitroquinoline)(NO3)](n) (3), [Ag(3-quinolinecarbonitrile)(NO3)](n) (4), [Ag(3-quinolinecarbonitrile)(2)]NO3 (5), and [Ag(6-quinolinecarboxylic acid)(2)]NO3 (6) are described. As an alternative to solution chemistry, solid-state grinding could be used to prepare compounds 1 and 3, but the preparation of 4 and 5 in this way failed. The Ag(I) ions in the monomeric compounds 1, 2, 5, and 6 are coordinated to two ligands via the nitrogen atoms of the quinoline rings, thereby forming a distorted linear coordination geometry with Ag-N bond distances of 2.142(2)-2.336(2) angstrom and N-Ag-N bond angles of 163.62(13)degrees-172.25(13)degrees. The 1D coordination polymers 3 and 4 contain Ag(I) centers coordinating one ligand and two bridging nitrate groups, thereby forming a distorted trigonal planar coordination geometry with Ag-N bond distances of 2.2700(14) and 2.224(5) angstrom, Ag-O bond distances of 2.261(4)-2.536(5) angstrom, and N-Ag-O bond angles of 115.23(5)degrees-155.56(5)degrees. Hirshfeld surface analyses of compounds 1-6 are presented as d(norm) and curvedness maps. The d(norm) maps show different interaction sites around the Ag(I) ions, i.e., Ag center dot center dot center dot Ag interactions and possible O-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot N, and C-H center dot center dot center dot C hydrogen bonds. Curvedness maps are a good way of visualizing pi-pi tacking interactions between molecules. The antimicrobial activities of compounds 1, 2, and 6 were screened against 15 different multidrug-resistant strains of bacteria isolated from diabetic foot ulcers and compared to the antimicrobial activities of the clinically used silver sulfadiazine (SS). Compound 2 showed activity similar to SS against this set of test organisms, being active against all strains and having slightly better average silver efficiency than SS (5 vs 6 mu g Ag/mL). Against the standard nonresistant bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and Streptococcus pyogenes, compound 1 performed better than silver nitrate, with an average MIC of 6 mu g Ag/mL versus 18 mu g Ag/mL for the reference AgNO3. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analyses of compounds 3 and 6 in DMSO/MeOH confirm the two-coordinated Ag+ complexes in solution, and the results of the H-1 NMR titrations of DMSO solutions of 5-nitroquinoline and 8-nitroquinoline with AgNO3 in DMSO suggest that 5-nitroquinoline is more strongly coordinated to the silver ion

    Do Quality Improvement Initiatives Improve Outcomes for Patients in Antiretroviral Programs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries? A Systematic Review.

    BACKGROUND: There have been a range of quality improvement (QI) and quality assurance initiatives in low- and middle-income countries to improve antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment outcomes for people living with HIV. To date, these initiatives have not been systematically assessed and little is known about how effective, cost-effective, or sustainable these strategies are in improving clinical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO ID: CRD42017071848), searching PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane database of controlled trials for articles reporting on the effectiveness of QI and quality assurance initiatives in HIV programs in low- and middle-income countries in relation to ART uptake, retention in care, adherence, viral load suppression, mortality, and other outcomes including cost-effectiveness and long-term sustainability. RESULTS: One thousand eight hundred sixty articles were found, of which 29 were included. QI approaches were categorized as follows: (1) health system approaches using QI methods; (2) QI learning networks including collaboratives; (3) standard-based methods that use QI tools to improve performance gaps; and (4) campaigns using QI methods. The greatest improvements were seen in ART uptake [median increase of 14.0%; interquartile range (IQR) -9.0 to 29.3], adherence [median increase of 22.0% (IQR -7.0 to 25.0)], and viral load suppression [median increase 26.0% (IQR -8.0 to 26.0)]. CONCLUSIONS: QI interventions can be effective in improving clinical outcomes; however, there was significant variability, making it challenging to identify which aspects of interventions lead to clinical improvements. Standardizing reporting and assessment of QI initiatives is needed, supported by national quality policies and directorates, and robust research
