Transverse effects in multifrequency Raman generation
The theory of ultrabroadband multifrequency Raman generation is extended, for the first time, to allow for beam-propagation effects in one and two transverse dimensions. We show that a complex transverse structure develops even when diffraction is neglected. In the general case, we examine how the ultrabroadband multifrequency Raman generation process is affected by the intensity, phase quality, and width of the input beams, and by the length of the Raman medium. The evolution of power spectra, intensity profiles, and global characteristics of the multifrequency beams are investigated and explained. In the two-dimensional transverse case, bandwidths comparable to the optical carrier frequency, spanning the whole visible spectrum and beyond, are still achievable
Optimization of a Langmuir-Taylor detector for lithium
This paper describes the construction and optimization of a Langmuir-Taylor
detector for lithium, using a rhenium ribbon. The absolute detection
probability of this very sensitive detector is measured and the dependence of
this probability with oxygen pressure and surface temperature is studied.
Sources of background signal and their minimization are also discussed in
details. And a comparison between our data concerning the response time of the
detector and literature values is given. A theoretical analysis has been made:
this analysis supports the validity of the Saha-Langmuir law to relate the
ionization probability to the work function. Finally, the rapid variations of
the work function with oxygen pressure and temperature are explained by a

Initial POLAR MFE observation of substorm signatures in the polar magnetosphere
This paper studies substorm influences in the polar magnetosphere using data from the POLAR magnetic field experiment (MFE). The POLAR spacecraft remains in the high altitude polar magnetosphere for extended periods around apogee. There it can stay at nearly constant altitude through all phases of a substorm, which was not possible on previous missions. We report such an event on March 28, 1996. Ground magnetometers monitored substorm activity, while the POLAR spacecraft, directly over the pole at (−0.8, −0.6, 8.5) RE in GSM coordinates, observed a corresponding perturbation in the total magnetic field strength. The total magnetic field first increased, then recovered toward quiet levels, consistent with erosion of magnetic flux from the dayside magnetosphere, followed by transport of that flux to the magnetotail, and eventual onset of tail reconnection and the return of that magnetic flux to the dayside magnetosphere
Microstructure and superconducting properties of hot isostatically pressed MgB2
Bulk samples of MgB2 have been formed by hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) of
commercial powder at 100MPa and 950=B0C. The resulting material is 100% dense
with a sharp superconducting transition at 37.5K. Microstructural studies have
indicated the presence of small amounts of second phases within the material,
namely MgO and B rich compositions, probably MgB4. Magnetisation measurements
performed at 20K have revealed values of Jc=1.3 x 106A/cm2 at zero field, and
9.3 x 105A/cm2 at 1T. Magneto optical (MO) studies have shown direct evidence
for the superconducting homogeneity and strong intergranular current flow in

Separation of long DNA chains using non-uniform electric field: a numerical study
We study migration of DNA molecules through a microchannel with a series of
electric traps controlled by an ac electric field. We describe the motion of
DNA based on Brownian dynamics simulations of a beads-spring chain. Our
simulation demonstrates that the chain captured by an electrode escapes from
the binding electric field due to thermal fluctuation. We find that the
mobility of chain would depend on the chain length; the mobility sharply
increases when the length of a chain exceeds a critical value, which is
strongly affected by the amplitude of the applied ac field. Thus we can adjust
the length regime, in which this microchannel well separates DNA molecules,
without changing the structure of the channel. We also present a theoretical
insight into the relation between the critical chain length and the field

Terminal velocity and drag reduction measurements on superhydrophobic spheres
Super water-repellent surfaces occur naturally on plants and aquatic insects and are created in the laboratory by combining micro- or nanoscale surface topographic features with hydrophobic surface chemistry. When such types of water-repellent surfaces are submerged they can retain a film of air (a plastron). In this work, we report measurements of the terminal velocity of solid acrylic spheres with various surface treatments settling under the action of gravity in water. We observed increases in terminal velocity corresponding to drag reduction of between 5% and 15% for superhydrophobic surfaces that carry plastrons
New D-term chaotic inflation in supergravity and leptogenesis
We present a new model of D-term dominated chaotic inflation in supergravity.
The F-flat direction present in this model is lifted by the dominant D-term,
which leads to chaotic inflation and subsequent reheating. No cosmic string is
formed after inflation because the U(1) gauge symmetry is broken during
inflation. The leptogenesis scenario via the inflaton decay in our D-term

Quasi-Lie schemes and Emden--Fowler equations
The recently developed theory of quasi-Lie schemes is studied and applied to
investigate several equations of Emden type and a scheme to deal with them and
some of their generalisations is given. As a first result we obtain t-dependent
constants of the motion for particular instances of Emden equations by means of
some of their particular solutions. Previously known results are recovered from
this new perspective. Finally some t-dependent constants of the motion for
equations of Emden type satisfying certain conditions are recovered
