    Interaction of martensitic microstructures in adjacent grains

    It is often observed that martensitic microstructures in adjacent polycrystal grains are related. For example, micrographs of Arlt exhibit propagation of layered structures across grain boundaries in the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation in BaTiO3\rm BaTiO_3. Such observations are related to requirements of compatibility of the deformation at the grain boundary. Using a generalization of the Hadamard jump condition, this is explored in the nonlinear elasticity model of martensitic transformations for the case of a bicrystal with suitably oriented columnar geometry, in which the microstructure in both grains is assumed to involve just two martensitic variants, with a planar or non-planar interface between the grains.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, submitted to ICOMAT 2017 Proceeding

    On the occasion of the opening ceremony of the 43rd Sicilian Congress of Pediatrics, linked with Italian Society of Pediatrics SIP, SIN, SIMEUP, SIAIP and SINP, held in Catania in November 2015, the Organizing Committee dedicated a tribute to Professor John Opitz and invited him to give a Masters Lecture for the attendees at the Congress. The theme expounded was "Storytelling in Pediatrics and Genetics: Lessons from Aesop and from Mendel". The contribution of John Opitz to the understanding of pediatric clinical disorders and genetic anomalies has been extremely relevant. The interests of Professor John Opitz are linked not only to genetic disorders but also extend to historical medicine, history of the literature and to human evolution. Due to his exceptional talent, combined with his specific interest and basal knowledge in the genetic and pediatric fields, he is widely credited to be one of the best pediatricians in the world

    Distribution of endothelial cell protein C/activated protein C receptor (EPCR) during mouse embryo development.

    The endothelial cell protein C receptor (EPCR) augments protein C activation by the thrombomodulin.thrombin complex. Deletion of the EPCR gene in mice has been reported to lead to embryonic lethality before embryonic day 10 (E10.0). To identify potential mechanisms responsible for this lethality, we performed an immunohistological analysis of EPCR distribution during mouse embryogenesis. EPCR was detected in the trophoblast giant cells at the feto-maternal boundary from E7.5 and at later time points in the trophoblasts of the placenta, suggesting a role in the haemostatic regulation of the maternal blood that irrigates these surfaces. In the embryo, EPCR was weakly detected in aortic endothelial cells from E13.5. Thereafter, EPCR levels increased in certain large blood vessels endothelial cells suggesting that the specificity of EPCR to large vessels is conferred in utero. However, not until postnatal day 7 did the intensity and distribution of EPCR staining mimic that observed in adult mice

    Obtaining new and flexible classes of nonseparable spatio-temporal covariances have resulted in a key point of research in the last years within the context of spatiotemporal Geostatistics. Approach: In general, the literature has focused on the problem of full symmetry and the problem of anisotropy has been overcome. Results: By exploring mathematical properties of positive definite functions and their close connection to covariance functions we are able to develop new spatio-temporal covariance models taking into account the problem of spatial anisotropy.
