Controllable Persistent Atom Current of Bose-Einstein Condensates in an Optical Lattice Ring
In this paper the macroscopic quantum states of Bose-Einstein condensates in
optical lattices is studied by solving the periodic Gross-Pitaevskii equation
in one-dimensional geometry. It is shown that an exact solution seen to be a
travelling wave of excited macroscopic quantum states resultes in a persistent
atom current which can be controlled by adjusting of the barrier height of the
optical periodic potential. A critical condition to generate the travelling
wave is demonstrated and we moreover propose a practical experiment to realize
the persistent atom current in a toroidal atom waveguide.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure
Enhancement of Quantum Tunneling for Excited States in Ferromagnetic Particles
A formula suitable for a quantitative evaluation of the tunneling effect in a
ferromagnetic particle is derived with the help of the instanton method. The
tunneling between n-th degenerate states of neighboring wells is dominated by a
periodic pseudoparticle configuration. The low-lying level-splitting previously
obtained with the LSZ method in field theory in which the tunneling is viewed
as the transition of n bosons induced by the usual (vacuum) instanton is
recovered. The observation made with our new result is that the tunneling
effect increases at excited states. The results should be useful in analyzing
results of experimental tests of macroscopic quantum coherence in ferromagnetic
particles.Comment: 18 pages, LaTex, 1 figur
Phase diagram of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice
The exact macroscopic wave functions of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates
in an optical lattice beyond the tight-binding approximation are studied by
solving the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The phase diagram for
superfluid and insulator phases of the condensates is determined analytically
according to the macroscopic wave functions of the condensates, which are seen
to be traveling matter waves.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure
Quantisation of 2D-gravity with Weyl and area-preserving diffeomorphism invariances
The constraint structure of 2D-gravity with the Weyl and area-preserving
diffeomorphism invariances is analysed in the ADM formulation. It is found that
when the area-preserving diffeomorphism constraints are kept, the usual
conformal gauge does not exist, whereas there is the possibility to choose the
so-called ``quasi-light-cone'' gauge, in which besides the area-preserving
diffeomorphism invariance, the reduced Lagrangian also possesses the SL(2,R)
residual symmetry. The string-like approach is applied to quantise this model,
but a fictitious non-zero central charge in the Virasoro algebra appears. When
a set of gauge-independent SL(2,R) current-like fields is introduced instead of
the string-like variables, a consistent quantum theory is obtained.Comment: 14 pages, Latex fil
Winding number transitions at finite temperature in the Abelian-Higgs model
Following our earlier investigations we examine the quantum-classical winding
number transition in the Abelian-Higgs system. It is demonstrated that the
sphaleron transition in this system is of the smooth second order type in the
full range of parameter space. Comparison of the action of classical vortices
with that of the sphaleron supports our finding.Comment: final version, to appear in J. Phys.
Instanton Induced Tunneling Amplitude at Excited States with the LSZ Method
Quantum tunneling between degenerate ground states through the central
barrier of a potential is extended to excited states with the instanton method.
This extension is achieved with the help of an LSZ reduction technique as in
field theory and may be of importance in the study of macroscopic quantum
phenomena in magnetic systems.Comment: 8 pages, LaTex, no figure

An agent-based DDM for high level architecture
The Data Distribution Management (DDM) service is one of the six services provided in the Runtime Infrastructure (RTI) of High Level Architecture (HLA). Its purpose is to perform data filtering and reduce irrelevant data communicated between federates. The two DDM schemes proposed for RTI, region based and grid based DDM, are oriented to send as little irrelevant data to subscribers as possible, but only manage to filter part of this information and some irrelevant data is still being communicated. Previously (G. Tan et al., 2000), we employed intelligent agents to perform data filtering in HLA, implemented an agent based DDM in RTI (ARTI) and compared it with the other two filtering mechanisms. The paper reports on additional experiments, results and analysis using two scenarios: the AWACS sensing aircraft simulation and the air traffic control simulation scenario. Experimental results show that compared with other mechanisms, the agent based approach communicates only relevant data and minimizes network communication, and is also comparable in terms of time efficiency. Some guidelines on when the agent based scheme can be used are also give
Renormalization of the three-boson system with short-range interactions revisited
We consider renormalization of the three-body scattering problem in
low-energy effective field theory of self-interacting scalar particles by
applying time-ordered perturbation theory to the manifestly Lorentz-invariant
formulation. The obtained leading-order equation is perturbatively
renormalizable and non-perturbatively finite and does not require a three-body
counter term in contrast to its non-relativistic approximation.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Quantum Technology: The Second Quantum Revolution
We are currently in the midst of a second quantum revolution. The first
quantum revolution gave us new rules that govern physical reality. The second
quantum revolution will take these rules and use them to develop new
technologies. In this review we discuss the principles upon which quantum
technology is based and the tools required to develop it. We discuss a number
of examples of research programs that could deliver quantum technologies in
coming decades including; quantum information technology, quantum
electromechanical systems, coherent quantum electronics, quantum optics and
coherent matter technology.Comment: 24 pages and 6 figure
