A 695-Hz quasi-periodic oscillation in the low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676

We report the discovery of a 695-Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in data taken with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer of the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) EXO 0748-676. This makes EXO 0748-676 the second dipping LMXB, after 4U 1915-05, that shows kHz QPOs. Comparison with other sources suggests that the QPO corresponds to the lower frequency peak of the kHz QPO pair often observed in other LMXBs. The QPO was found in the only observation done during an outburst of the source in early 1996. This observation is also the only one in which the ~1 Hz QPO recently found in EXO 0748-676 is not present.Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication in Part 1 of The Astrophysical Journa

On the nature of the first transient Z-source XTE J1701-462: its accretion disk structure, neutron star magnetic field strength, and hard tail

Using the data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer satellite, we investigate the spectral evolution along a "Z" track and a "v" track on the hardness-intensity diagrams of the first transient Z source XTE J1701-462. The spectral analyses suggest that the inner disk radius depends on the mass accretion rate, in agreement with the model prediction, R_in \propto ((dM/dt)_disk)^{2/7}, for a radiation pressure dominated accretion disk interacting with the magnetosphere of a neutron star (NS). The changes in the disk mass accretion rate (dM/dt)_disk are responsible for the evolution of the "Z" or "v" track. The radiation pressure thickens the disk considerably, and also produces significant outflows. The NS surface magnetic field strength, derived from the interaction between the magnetosphere and the radiation pressure dominated accretion disk, is ~(1--3)X10^9 G, which is possibly between normal atoll and Z sources. A significant hard tail is detected in the horizontal branches and we discuss several possible origins of the hard tail

Facing emotional politicians: Do emotional displays of politicians evoke mimicry and emotional contagion?

Emotional displays of politicians can be persuasive. According to prominent psychological theories, we can easily “catch” the emotional displays of others through mimicry and emotional contagion. Do these processes work for politicians too, or is it conditional on what voters think of the politician making the display? In a preregistered within-subjects laboratory experiment, participants observed images of neutral and manipulated emotional displays of politicians. We measured emotional mimicry (facial electromyography) and emotional contagion (self-reports). We do not find evidence for the matched motor hypothesis. Our findings are in line with the emotional mimicry in social context model. Namely, we find that the happy displays of in-party politicians elicit congruent facial activity (a positive facial index). Furthermore, the displays of the out-party politicians do not elicit mimicry, but instead our findings suggest a reactive response: Participants smiled in response to angry out-party politicians. The self-reported emotions indicated a small effect of emotional contagion. Taken together, our study provides insights in how voters are emotionally affected by politicians’ emotional displays and highlights that our polarized prior beliefs color our emotional responses to politics

XTE J1701-462 and its Implications for the Nature of Subclasses in Low-Magnetic-Field Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries

We report on an analysis of RXTE data of the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS-LMXB) XTE J1701-462, obtained during its 2006-2007 outburst. The X-ray properties of the source changed between those of various types of NS-LMXB subclasses. At high luminosities the source switched between two types of Z source behavior and at low luminosities we observed a transition from Z source to atoll source behavior. These transitions between subclasses primarily manifest themselves as changes in the shapes of the tracks in X-ray color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams, but they are accompanied by changes in the kHz quasi-periodic oscillations, broad-band variability, burst behavior, and/or X-ray spectra. We find that the low-energy X-ray flux is a good parameter to track the gradual evolution of the tracks in color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams, allowing us to resolve the evolution of the source in greater detail than before and relate the observed properties to other NS-LMXBs. We further find that during the transition from Z to atoll, characteristic behavior known as the atoll upper banana can equivalently be described as the final stage of a weakening Z source flaring branch, thereby blurring the line between the two subclasses. Our findings strongly suggest that the wide variety in behavior observed in NS-LXMBs with different luminosities can be linked through changes in a single variable parameter, namely the mass accretion rate, without the need for additional differences in the neutron star parameters or viewing angle. We briefly discuss the implications of our findings for the spectral changes observed in NS LMXBs and suggest that, contrary to what is often assumed, the position along the color-color tracks of Z sources is not determined by the instantaneous mass accretion rate.Comment: Submitted to ApJ, comments are welcome. 13 pages, 8 figure
